Bridgeport native, Joseph Zerella, has been practicing endodontics in his boutique, state of the art office in downtown Fairfield since 2003. He specializes in pulpal and periapical diagnosis, root canal therapy, trauma management, and surgical/non-surgical root canal retreatment. Dr. Zerella uses the latest advancements and techniques in his field, including digital radiography, cone beam computed tomography, operating microscopes and ultrasonics. His extensive training with the operating microscope allows for an ultra-conservative technique and an optimal success rate.
Dr. Zerella graduated magna cum laude and New England Scholar from The University of Connecticut in 1995. He was admitted to the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and received his doctorate degree in 1999. Dr. Zerella graduated at the top of his class and while in dental school, he was inducted into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society, reserved for the top graduating students. Dr. Zerella was also inducted into Sigma Xi, a scientific honor society. He also received the ADA/DENTSPLY Student Clinician Award, American Academy of Oral Medicine Award, and The Quintessence Award for Research Achievement.
In 2000, Dr. Zerella completed a General Practice Residency at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT. He then finished his post-doctoral residency in endodontics at The University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine and received a Clinical Certificate in Endodontics and a Masters Degree in Dental Science.
Dr. Bill MacDonnell lives in West Hartford, CT with his wife, Margie. They have four grown children, Colleen, Andrew, Eileen and Patrick. When not practicing or teaching at UCONN School of Dental Medicine Bill is very active in civic activities and was chair of the West
Hartford Substance Abuse Commission and is on the boards of Bushnell Park Foundation, the Cedar Hill Cemetery Foundation, and the Connecticut State Dental Association Foundation. Bill has been involved in the restoration of the Dr. Horace Wells monuments in Hartford.
Dr. William MacDonnell is a dentist-anesthesiologist who maintains a sedation practice caring for patients across the state. His expertise is in conscious sedation, local anesthesia and medical emergencies. Dr. MacDonnells services benefits all types of peopleespecially those who are medically compromised and dental phobic.
A past president of the both the Connecticut State Dental Association (CSDA) and the American Society of Dentists Anesthesiologists, he is dedicated to the welfare of not only patients but also his fellow dentists. For several years, he chaired the CSDAs annual state convention and also served as a member of the House of Delegates of the CSDA and the American Dental Association.

Great Endodontist with great assistants. Dr Zerella and his assistant are so in sync working together, it's fun to watch and puts me at ease! Also, he's top-notch talent and knows what he's doing. Dr. Zerella was redoing and fixing two of my root canals, which were originally done over 10 years ago by someone else, and he didn't even remove crown for one, when I shared it with one of my dentists, the dentist was like "God bless him, that takes talent". Knowing what I know now, I highly recommend Dr. Zerella, and I 2nd what someone mentioned below: if you need root canal done, don't do it with general dentist, have an Endodontist like Dr. Zerella do it for you, as it isn't a small task!

Don't go to anywhere but Zerella Endodontics. Do not rely on a general dentist for a root canal. Joe and his team are top notch. You will get great care.

I was referred to Zerella Endodontics for an evaluation of a dental problem I've been having for several years. I saw Dr. Charland for that visit and was extremely impressed with the time she spent with me doing an exam, reviewing the CT scan results, explaining clearly what my treatment options were, and answering all my questions. She was friendly and knowledgeable, as was the entire staff of the practice. Zerella Endodontics is a model of what a modern medical practice should be.

I could not be happier with the treatment I received! Dr. Zerella performed three pain-free root canals and made a point of telling me to contact him at any time if I had questions or concerns both pre- and post-procedures. His kind, compassionate demeanor made me feel extremely comfortable with the treatment plan, and the skill he demonstrated with each procedure put me totally at ease. Dr. Zerella's assistant was also excellent as were the office staff. If you are in need of an endodontist, I highly recommend Dr. Zerella.

Dr. Charland was fantastic with helping me with my extreme anxiety about having a root canal. She and her hygienist/technician were very understanding and soothing, and Dr. Charland suggested some medication that really helped me during the second visit to finish the procedure. I was worried sick about this and it was no picnic, but they made it go as well as it could have.

Dr Zerella is a highly skilled Endodontist. He is very compassionate about what he does and cares about the patient experience. He and his entire office team are top notch! He performed two root canals on me. One was quite complicated, but both root canals went smoothly and painlessly. I referred my daughter to him as well for issues she had after having her wisdom teeth removed. She had a great experience with him as well. We both agree - Dr Zerella is amazing! One of the best Endodontists around.

Dr. Zerella and his entire staff are fabulous. There was no wait. I was extremely nervous, but Dr. Zerella immediately made me feel at ease and comfortable. Most of all, I was worried about pain the best part is, I never felt any. I can't say enough good things about this practice. I highly recommend Zerella!

As a dentist, I felt confident in the hands of Dr. Joseph Zerella. His calm demeanor and professionalism makes you instantaneously comfortable. His staff are excellent and accommodating especially since I had to bring my kids to the appointment. The root canal procedure was most importantly PAINLESS and efficiently completed in a timely manner.
