Ive been around orthodontics for as long as I can remember with my father opening Zaytoun Orthodontics in 1959. That upbringing of being around my father and watching him change lives through perfecting smiles helped guide me in figuring out what I wanted to do when I grew up, which was to be in the healthcare field. Orthodontics for over 30 years. Joining my father and sister was a thrill for me and something that sets us apart from other orthodontists.

What I reflect most and what I find to be the most rewarding part of whatI do is seeing peoples transformations, from the first time they visit us to the finished product. I take pride in the fact that both myself and Dr. Mary Paula are Diplomats of the American Board of Orthodontics and have been for 25-plus years. Its a distinction thats held by only about 25% of orthodontists in the United States, and I think it shows our dedication to this field.

Since childhood, Ive been most interested in the study of art and history, with a special love for meticulous details, precision and perfecting my craft. I suppose thats why orthodontics was the perfect fit for me. My passion began at age eight when I worked at my fathers (Dr. Henry Zaytoun, Sr.) orthodontic practice. From that moment on, I knew that being an orthodontist was my destiny. Ive never even had another job and, luckily for me, orthodontics became my chosen career; and Ive worked in it ever since.

When college approached, I chose to study history, specifically art history, and then proceeded to move on to dental school- intertwining my art background with learning how to properly move teeth and shape smiles. During my studies, I continued to work with my father and began to grow an appreciation for human physiology and developed an understanding that no two faces are ever the same. I acquired a talent that would allow me to do something unique with every patient. I was able to link this connection into my studies as a dental student and then later into my career.

From the beginning of my career, I have strived to deliver the best care, with a pure heart and a passionate demeanor, for everyone who walks through the Zaytoun Orthodontics doors. I want everyone feeling their best and, of course, leave our time together with a result that is functional as well as beautiful and a smile that will last a lifetime.

Zaytoun Orthodontics has deep roots; we have completed care for over 38,000 patients. I have had the pleasure and fortune of being a part of this amazing history, and have witnessed Zaytoun transform into the practice that it is today. Without holding pride in things that are built and designed well, my passion would not have extended into my 35+ year career as the first female orthodontist in the state of North Carolina.

'Orthodontics has always been more of an art than a science to me. Working with a patient is like sculpting clay- I have to visualize, plan, and then execute how the teeth should properly support the face and lips.'

Dr. Henry Zaytoun, Sr. completed his pre-dental studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, afterward attending the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Upon graduation, he was commissioned and served in the United States Navy. After returning to the University of Maryland School of Dentistry for postgraduate studies, he then began practicing general dentistry in Rocky Mount.

In 1958, he returned to the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Dentistry to earn a Master of Science degree in Orthodontics.In 1960, the Zaytouns moved to Raleigh and established Zaytoun Orthodontics. Today, Dr. Henry, Sr. and two of his children, Dr. Henry, Jr. and Dr. Mary Paula, who also graduated from the UNC School of Dentistry, practice together as Zaytoun Orthodontics.

Dr. and Mrs. Zaytoun have raised nine children, all of whom have graduated from college, and many of whom have earned graduate degrees. They presently have 24 grandchildren living in Raleigh, Florida, and New York. Both Dr. and Mrs. Zaytoun are native North Carolinians and are proud to call themselves Tar Heels.
