Dr. Robert Yu has been practicing orthodontics in Maryland for several years. His personal mission is to guide his patients to become the best versions of themselves in terms of dental health, appearance, and self-esteem. A self-professed class clown, his favorite parts of being an orthodontist are joking with his patients and staff, and witnessing a patient that was once too shy to smile transform into an individual that can confidently grin ear to ear after their successful orthodontic treatment.
Before specializing in Orthodontics, Dr. Yu was classically trained in studio art at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County School of Visual Arts. There he received a strong foundation in drafting, sculpture, and design. His artwork has been displayed at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the NASA Goddard Center. He uses this experience in visual art when designing and executing orthodontic treatment plans for his patients.
Dr. Yu is well versed in the latest orthodontic technology including Invisalign, self-ligating braces, esthetic braces, soft tissue laser surgery, mini-implant TAD surgery, and 3D digital scanning. He received his DDS from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and served as Student Body President. He received his MS in Orthodontics from the University of Louisville, Kentucky. Upon graduation, like Lamar Jackson, he immediately moved to Maryland. Dr. Yu is the recipient of numerous awards including the Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Gorgas Odontological, Gamma Pi Delta, and Pierre Fauchard honors. He is also active with the AAO, ADA, MSDA, Montgomery County, Maimonides, Mid Maryland, and Pankey dental societies.
A native of Maryland, Dr. Yu is proud to serve his hometown community. In his free time, he enjoys volunteering, creating art, playing guitar, swimming, rock climbing, snowboarding, and traveling the world. He has completed several 5ks and a triathlon. If he could do anything, he would visit all the national parks in America. He looks forward to providing excellent orthodontic care for your family!
Gail was born and raised in the DC area and has been with the practice for over 18 years. She knows the ins and outs of orthodontic treatment will stop at nothing to make sure our patients receive quality care in a warm environment. She takes pride in helping others achieve confidence in their beautiful new smiles and opens the office doors each day with one goal in mind: to serve our patients.
Sandy has also been with the practice for almost 20 years. She has a kind and caring personality that instantly puts even the most anxious patient at ease. She backs this up with expert clinical skills honed over her many years of experience.
Its more important than ever to brush and floss regularly when you have braces, so the teeth and gums are healthy during orthodontic treatment. Patients who do not keep their teeth clean may require more frequent visits to the dentist for a professional cleaning. What can you eat? Lets talk about what you shouldnt eat! For the first day or so, stick to soft foods. Avoid tough meats, hard breads, and raw vegetables. Before long, youll be able to bite a cucumber again. But youll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as youre wearing braces.
When you get your braces on, you may feel general soreness in your mouth and teeth may be tender to biting pressures for 3 5 days. Take Tylenol or whatever you normally take for headache or discomfort. The lips, cheeks and tongue may also become irritated for one to two weeks as they toughen and become accustomed to the braces. We will supply wax to put on the braces in irritated areas to lessen discomfort.
To successfully complete orthodontic treatment, the patient must work together with the orthodontist. The teeth and jaws can only move toward their corrected positions if the patient consistently wears the rubber bands or other appliances as prescribed. Lack of cooperation following instructions and damaged appliances lengthen the treatment time so please follow instructions.

Final updated review: Overall, I am very pleased with my results and the improved communication from Dr. Yu and the staff. People are constantly complimenting my post braces smile. Updated review: Ten months into treatment, I don't feel like information is being given in a proactive or effective manner. First: Neither Dr. Yu or the ortho assistant told me that my appointments would be switching from every 8 weeks to every 6 weeks; the person at the front desk told me when I was scheduling my next visit. Second: After progressing to power chains, I wasn't told to continue wearing my elastics or given additional elastics until my next appointment. Now I have to go back through the adjustment period and get used to wearing them 22 hours a day again. Not an ideal outcome after a very painful visit. Communication should be a lot better. Previous 5 star rating: When I decided to start my orthodontic journey, I did not anticipate COVID-19. Dr. Yu has made the journey less harrowing. He is friendly and knowledgeable! Also I can't beat being able to see the orthodontist at my regular dentist's office.

Dr. Yu and his team have been incredible for our daughter Rosie! She had a problem with her recently placed retainer, and when we called the office 2 minutes before closing, they told us to come on in so he could fix it even though we live 30 minutes away. We want to extend a big "Thank You!" to Dr. Yu for staying more than an hour past closing to ensure that everything was fixed for Rosie. Exceptional customer service! We highly recommend this practice.

I had three consultations for my 9-year-old's cross bite. I chose Dr. Yu, even though his office was the farthest from my house, because his plan was the gentlest and fastest with the bonus of a reasonable price. He and the staff are friendly, efficient, and helpful, and I didn't feel like I was being pressured into treatment for my child. My kid was so nervous at first, but Dr. Yu and staff made him comfortable through the whole process, and of course best of all, the cross bite is corrected. I am so glad we found Dr. Yu.

I started my treatment on June 1, 2021 to close a huge gap and overbite. My treatment should have been for 13 months. Completed my active trays, closed gap and fixed overbite all in 8 months. I'm completely satisfied. The staffs here are awesome. They'll work with you every step of the way from payment plans to appointments. Dr. Yu is the BEST hands down. Very friendly environment. I had a great experience with Dr. Yu and his team! Making appointments with them was very flexible and they were always ready for me on the day of my appointment. On the day of my consultation they were open to hear what my concerns for my teeth were and which treatment I was looking to get. Dr. Yu went into detail on how the whole Invisalign process goes and agreed it was a better option for me rather than traditional braces. They were very friendly and made me feel comfortable. We are glad this place was recommended to us! My son was a little nervous going there, but the minute we walked in, we were welcomed as if we have been there before. They are following all the protocols for covid precautions (temp check, sanitize, etc.).The place is in great Gaithersburg location. Yu Orthodontics was recommended by a friend and I have to say...the staff and Dr. Yu made me feel very comfortable during my first visit. He explained the treatment plan for my TMJ concerns and was very thorough. I didn't feel rushed at all during my consultation and he was able to answer all my questions in detail. Gail was fantastic from the beginning to the end. She was very helpful with setting me up for the appointment and loved her upbeat personality! I felt very welcomed and walked out happy and confident from this practice. I'm excited to start the treatment process in a few weeks!
