However, because most adult teeth are already in place, there is often no room for wisdom teeth so they do not develop or emerge normally. Some grow in sideways, only partly emerge or never break through the gum and bone. These teeth get stuck, or impacted, and could pose a risk to your oral health and well-being.

According to a recent study more than 10 million wisdom teeth are removed in the United States each year and approximately 60 percent of these surgeries arent necessary at the time. So why do dentists keep doing it?

Most people have four total wisdom teethtwo on the top and two on the bottom. However, there are patients who never develop any wisdom teeth or only some. If any one of these teeth becomes impacted, or stuck, you could suffer from some serious long-term problems and studies show there is about a 65 percent to 72 percent chance most Americans will have at least one impacted wisdom tooth.

Impacted third molars, commonly known as wisdom teeth, often cause pain, damage to neighboring teeth, crowding and a myriad of other dental problems because of spacing. They are also difficult to clean and can leave teeth even more vulnerable to infection, decay and abscess. This is why wisdom teeth removal is still a standard practice across the nation.

  • Bony (or hard tissue). This means the tooth is still mostly stuck within the jawbone. Full-bony impaction means almost all the tooth is encased and partial-bony means some of it has broken through slightly.
  • Many healthcare professionals attribute these developmental problems to modern human diets. Historically, people who hunted, gathered and harvested their food suffered from excessive tooth wear and loss because of their coarse diets. These experts hypothesize the third molars were evolutions answer to premature tooth loss. Back then, these teeth would often grow in when several other adult teeth had already gone missing. Today modern diets contain higher levels of soft foods. With that and the advent of modern dentistry, people today rarely have missing teeth at the age of 20. So now, there is just no need and no room for these third molars.

Many professionals go head to head on this very issue. Some dentists say it is best to remove wisdom teeth around the age of 20 and some say to wait and only remove teeth once there is a problem, especially in adults above the age of 30. No arguments though, the best results in dentistry comes from preventative measures. If you wait too long for wisdom teeth removal your jawbone and teeth begin to set. As they get harder, the third molars are even more difficult to remove and the procedure becomes even more painful and complex.

If you wait, you also have a greater risk of postoperative side-effects like sinus issues, heavy bleeding, damaged tooth roots in healthy teeth, and limited jaw movement. These symptoms might last just a couple of days or for the rest of your life. So what should you do? Always consult with a specialist to see where your teeth are and if problems are likely to arise. Then you can work together to find the best treatment options for your unique needs.

We look for a number of factors during your wisdom teeth consult. First the X-rays will play a huge part. Ask your dentist to describe what he or she sees in the images and the expected pattern of growth. In addition to the development and location of your wisdom teeth, the dentist also considers your oral health, age, dental and medical history and other symptoms.

In some cases, a wisdom tooth grows in normally and the extraction procedure, if deemed necessary, is fairly straightforward. However, in many cases, the wisdom teeth do not fully develop, remain impacted in the soft tissue or bone and require extraction so they do not cause other serious problems like infection, damage to the neighboring teeth or chronic pain. The complexity of the procedure depends on the condition of your wisdom teethspecifically where they are in relation to the soft tissue, bone, neighboring teeth and sinus.

The surgical team will closely monitor your medication, breathing, temperature and blood pressure. You generally willhave no or little memory of the procedure. A licensed anesthesia professional, generally a CRNA (certified nurse anesthetist), will administer your anesthesia.

We want to be sure you never have to come back to our office unless you referred a friend or family member. With our expert care, the overarching goal at our wisdom teeth removal company in Dallas and Utah is to evaluate the condition of your wisdom teeth, map out any potential issues they could cause, and remove problematic teeth before they cause any serious damage.

For wisdom teeth removal, you should only trust licensed doctors of dental surgery (DDS) or doctors of medical dentistry (DMD). For the most part we had a good experience at the Wisdom Teeth Guys. It was fairly easy to find (Sandy location). We didn't have to wait long to get in. The only problem we had was that the nurse couldn't get the IV into my daughter's vein. She dug around a bit and couldn't do it twice. So the Dr came and tried and he couldn't do it twice either. Finally the 5th location worked. It was not great. He was very kind about it, trying to distract her and ask her questions. So we weren't mad about it. I just know now to have the best phlebotomist first. After they got the IV in she was out in 2 seconds and her teeth were out in less than 10 minutes. It was a great surgery. Her recovery has been really easy. So besides the needle, we had a great experience with the Wisdom Teeth Guys.

Just had my wisdom teeth out a few hours ago and it couldn't have gone better! They are so quick and easy and make you feel so comfortable! I was nervous for the anesthesia, but the anesthesiologist was SO kind and made me feel comfortable! The doctor was so great and all the assistants were too! I highly recommended this place!!!

everything was taken care of before we got there and we got right in and right out. No problems, complications or setbacks. We knew exactly how to contact them if needed and they followed up to see how it was going. And I saved a ton of money with them

This is my third time at Wisdom Teeth Guys. The previous two were at the Draper location which were good experiences. This visit at the Sandy location left some to be desired. The office is hard to find as there is minimal signage even indicating where it is. The front desk girls were not mean but weren't friendly and seemed annoyed to be doing their job. The anesthesiologist was all business and did little to make my son feel comfortable. The dr was fine but he did hit a nerve which left residual numbing. TBD when that goes away. The whole experience felt like we were cattle being herded through. The staff we had contact with were not personable and the whole experience left us feeling more like dollar signs and less like actual humans. Also, they literally spam you with messages reminding you to your appointment, which was super annoying. It wasn't a terrible experience but in the future I'll go with a different business or take my kids to a different location.

Majority of the staff was actually welcoming and friendly. Very pleasant experience up until we got to the actual procedure portion of things. The anesthesiologist walked in the room without knowing who I was. As any doctor you should know who you're about to treat as well as having a plan in mind. He genuinely seemed like he was one week into his two weeks notice and couldn't be bothered. Guessed several different patient names before realizing he didn't even have my paperwork! He then proceeded to INTENTIONALLY use the wrong height as a reference for my anesthesia dosage. Oh and when they started to put me under they gave me no warning... literally had to ask them as I was passing out. So unprofessional!!! (EDIT: was informed that this was not their regular anesthesiologist and I was one of the lucky patients who got stuck with a bad temp) Currently 5 days post op and well aware of the fact that they hit a nerve while extracting one of my teeth. You'd think they'd have it down to a science by now considering they remove wisdom teeth all day but it seems like all they care about is getting you in and out of the door as quickly as possible.
