However, because most adult teeth are already in place, there is often no room for wisdom teeth so they do not develop or emerge normally. Some grow in sideways, only partly emerge or never break through the gum and bone. These teeth get stuck, or impacted, and could pose a risk to your oral health and well-being.

According to a recent study more than 10 million wisdom teeth are removed in the United States each year and approximately 60 percent of these surgeries arent necessary at the time. So why do dentists keep doing it?

Most people have four total wisdom teethtwo on the top and two on the bottom. However, there are patients who never develop any wisdom teeth or only some. If any one of these teeth becomes impacted, or stuck, you could suffer from some serious long-term problems and studies show there is about a 65 percent to 72 percent chance most Americans will have at least one impacted wisdom tooth.

Impacted third molars, commonly known as wisdom teeth, often cause pain, damage to neighboring teeth, crowding and a myriad of other dental problems because of spacing. They are also difficult to clean and can leave teeth even more vulnerable to infection, decay and abscess. This is why wisdom teeth removal is still a standard practice across the nation.

  • Bony (or hard tissue). This means the tooth is still mostly stuck within the jawbone. Full-bony impaction means almost all the tooth is encased and partial-bony means some of it has broken through slightly.
  • Many healthcare professionals attribute these developmental problems to modern human diets. Historically, people who hunted, gathered and harvested their food suffered from excessive tooth wear and loss because of their coarse diets. These experts hypothesize the third molars were evolutions answer to premature tooth loss. Back then, these teeth would often grow in when several other adult teeth had already gone missing. Today modern diets contain higher levels of soft foods. With that and the advent of modern dentistry, people today rarely have missing teeth at the age of 20. So now, there is just no need and no room for these third molars.

Many professionals go head to head on this very issue. Some dentists say it is best to remove wisdom teeth around the age of 20 and some say to wait and only remove teeth once there is a problem, especially in adults above the age of 30. No arguments though, the best results in dentistry comes from preventative measures. If you wait too long for wisdom teeth removal your jawbone and teeth begin to set. As they get harder, the third molars are even more difficult to remove and the procedure becomes even more painful and complex.

If you wait, you also have a greater risk of postoperative side-effects like sinus issues, heavy bleeding, damaged tooth roots in healthy teeth, and limited jaw movement. These symptoms might last just a couple of days or for the rest of your life. So what should you do? Always consult with a specialist to see where your teeth are and if problems are likely to arise. Then you can work together to find the best treatment options for your unique needs.

We look for a number of factors during your wisdom teeth consult. First the X-rays will play a huge part. Ask your dentist to describe what he or she sees in the images and the expected pattern of growth. In addition to the development and location of your wisdom teeth, the dentist also considers your oral health, age, dental and medical history and other symptoms.

In some cases, a wisdom tooth grows in normally and the extraction procedure, if deemed necessary, is fairly straightforward. However, in many cases, the wisdom teeth do not fully develop, remain impacted in the soft tissue or bone and require extraction so they do not cause other serious problems like infection, damage to the neighboring teeth or chronic pain. The complexity of the procedure depends on the condition of your wisdom teethspecifically where they are in relation to the soft tissue, bone, neighboring teeth and sinus.

The surgical team will closely monitor your medication, breathing, temperature and blood pressure. You generally willhave no or little memory of the procedure. A licensed anesthesia professional, generally a CRNA (certified nurse anesthetist), will administer your anesthesia.

We want to be sure you never have to come back to our office unless you referred a friend or family member. My daughter seems to be doing well after 4 impacted wisdom teeth extracred. I felt the Dr. was kind, not to personable, he did not come out afterward to give me a update to tell me how she did or the extraction removable. The little gal bringing her back and discussing the procedure was extremely sweet before and after. Kinda felt like run them in and out place. For a child that is feeling terrified there was really no compassion or a at ease atmosphere. The gals up front were not so polite. Pretty much you need to pay before procedure is done. The cost was different then discussed. I have been in the dental field for over 25 years. I am very compassionate with my patients and try to make their experience a happy feel safe zone. So being said I'm giving it only two stars.

My son just had his wisdom teeth pulled this morning and The Wisdom Teeth Guys we're awesome!! Everyone was very attentive. The vibes had my son and I very at ease and smiles. This was my first child getting his wisdom teeth pulled, so we (my son & I) were very nervous. For first timers like us, I would advise you to make sure you have Tylenol and ibuprofen on hand as well as ice packs! The office sends you home with non reusable ones...so make sure you have some at home already in the freezer to help make for a easier post op.

I came here after some difficulty with another dentist and was not disappointed at all! From my first phone call with them to some post-op questions, they were nothing but kind and helpful. The office was clean, the procedure was fast, and the staff were eager to make sure all my questions were answered and that I was well informed. They were efficient and fast but I never felt rushed. Honestly, for the price you can't beat it and the service was incredible. I will happily refer my any of my friends and family here :)

Maaaan! This place is crazy great ! One second I'm in the chair freakin out about being put to sleep as the dentist is saying he's putting the sleeping medicine in my IV next second they're asking if I want my girlfriend in the room, like ummm yeah ! I wanted here here the whole time Hahaha turns out I was already done and that's why she was coming in. How the Heck did that happen so fast ! I'm bamboozed honestly, All I'm saying is this was the smoothest easiest process to removing 5 TEETH. And Madie was incredible and made me laugh the whole time before I went night night. Was scared for nothing. I would absolutely go to them again IF they didn't already take my 4 wisdom teeth hahahaha 10/10 definitely recommend. And the Orem office is the best hands down. I traveled from salt lake and I would do it again. Thank you the wisdom guy team!

This office is wonderful!! My daughters health, comfort, and well being were clearly their top priority. We've been other places where money and paying them was the only important thing. Polite, professional, and kind doctors and staff. Super fast. In and out in less than an hour. We will be returning for all of our family's oral surgical needs. Highly recommend!

This was my families' second time with Wisdom Teeth Guys and I cannot recommend them highly enough. They definitely know how to provide everyone with the best service! Patient care is fabulous! They communicate very efficiently - reminders, online paperwork and follow-up. They even give you a number to directly call for problems. I wish I would have known about them for my oldest, which was such an opposite experience from these guys!
