Alabama Medicaid is a program that pays for routine dental care for the children of Alabama under the age of 21 years, as long as the child is eligible for full Medicaid. Most children are no longer eligible after their 19th birthday unless they qualify for another category. Adults age 21 and older are not eligible for dental coverage through Medicaid.

More than a million Alabama residents each year qualify for full or partial Medicaid coverage. To qualify for Alabama Medicaid, applicants must meet and provide proof of income, meet age requirements, fill out forms correctly and turn in a completed application to the correct office or worker.

Alabama Medicaid dental services must be provided by or under the supervision of licensed dentists enrolled as Medicaid dental providers. Routine procedures involving the teeth covered* by Medicaid include:

  • Limited outpatient and inpatient hospitalization coverage for adults with dental problems exacerbating medical conditions (the dental procedures themselves are not covered, only facility and anesthesia services)
  • Orthodontic services considered medically necessary for children with cleft lip/palate and/or other severe facial and cranial abnormalities, and who are served through Childrens Rehabilitation Services
  • ALL Kids is a low-cost health care coverage program for children under age of 19 years. Benefits include regular checkups and immunizations, sick child doctor visits, prescriptions, vision and dental care, hospitalization, mental health and substance abuse services, and much more.

ALL Kids uses Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama (BCBSAL) to provide services through their preferred provider network. If your child is approved, coverage will begin on the first day of the month after the application is received.

Income eligibility determination can only be made when a complete application is received by ALL Kids. Please note, even if your income falls outside of the below guidelines, you may still be eligible for coverage the only way to know for sure is to apply.

  • The PPO network is a group of doctors, dentists, pharmacies, hospitals and outpatient facilities enrolled as BCBSAL providers to offer services to ALL Kids enrollees at special, prearranged rates. There is no deductible when you use a PPO provider. Some services may require a small copay.
  • A copay is a small fee you may have to pay up front when your child sees the providers. Depending on which coverage bracket your child qualifies for, some services may require a copay. Your copays are determined by the ALL Kids fee group your child is in. There are no copays for preventive services like regular check-ups, immunizations, dental cleanings and vision exams.
  • You can choose any doctor who is enrolled as a BCBSAL PPO provider. To find a preferred provider in Alabama, you can look in your ALL Kids Preferred Provider Directory, call the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama dedicated customer service number, 1.800.760.6851, or visit Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.

My appointment was at 11am, which is when I showed up. It is now past 11:45am and I am still sitting in the waiting room. Update: I'm updating my review because the staff was really sweet to me and explained the cause of the delay. They did a great job and I overreacted because I was under stress and short of time.

The filling they did was loose and had a gap in it which led to my nerve dying now I need a root canal and a crown pretty upset.

I usually have to go to canyonville advantage dental and the dentist there is average but not good at helping the younger ones cooperate. By the time my 15 yr old got in at the winston advantage her # 30 and 31 were both in such bad shape. I am so grateful for Megan I believe was her name the dmd that helped my daughter with such ease. Thank you thank you thank you. I hope all my appointments from here on can be with her.

This place is horrible. I have Severe mental health issues and it's very hard for me to get into the dentist we are working on putting dentures in my mouth. Well they pulled the majority of my teeth told me to come in on 28 December so we can get started on my dentures and now it says everything is closed and nobody's answering the phones and I'm quite frustrated because of how this is seriously affecting my mind right now. It's really sad that they couldn't even call to give a heads up to patients that they were closing permanently or temporary or whatever the excuses. There's no reason somebody from that office should not have every reached to let people know what was going on I find it very unprofessional and I'm extremely upset because now I don't get my denture imprints today and more than likely it will be months and months and months before I'm able to do so due to the way they schedule things. It's not right.

Don't recommend. The incompetence of the front office staff is ridiculous she doesn't even know how to enter information into the computer when you give it to her. They didn't save any of our insurance information when we physically handed her the cards. And if you have ohp I highly recommend requesting a change.

NEVER take your children here. As my child's pediatrician requested, I brought my barely two year old daughter in for her first dental appointment. The dentist my daughter saw thought the funniest thing in the world to do was to pop out my daughter's pacifier because it made my daughter cry. She took her pacifier several times just so she could laugh when my daughter would start crying. This place is a disgrace and I'm thoroughly disgusted by the people they employ.

I am actually trying to find a new dentist who accepts ohp. This place is supposed to be the ohp contracted dentist and they still insist on trying to get me to get root canals. OHP specifically states that they don't do certain things after age 21. IF, on the rare instance OHP approved a special case for the root canal, they don't cover crowns, just this filling/cap combo that 'might' last a year. I already was told by my last dentist, when I had Blue Cross, that I'd need a partial, but they refuse to follow that treatment plan, insisting I keep teeth that are defective and cause pain and swelling of my jaw. They've also broken the veneers I on got on my old insurance for my front teeth with their cleanings and for OHP that's a cosmetic thing, so not covered to repair or replace. Then they've been pushing for my teen son to get root canals in over half of his teeth, but say that since he's not an adult, he has to go to a specialist, which again isn't covered. He has had soft enamel since birth and the hygienist is so rough, he has lost chunks of his teeth with cleanings.
