Food particles are naturally attracted to a tooth's enamel by a certain protein. Products like coffee and tea, berries and soy sauce are notorious for staining teeth. Over time, teeth actually become more absorbent and vulnerable to staining from food and other substances.
One type of staincaused by traumatic injuries, medications and fluorosisactually begins inside the tooth; brushing and flossing dont help. Another type of stainone that can be more easily attacked by brushing, flossing and rinsingis caused by external factors such as foods.
Some commercially available 'whitening toothpastes' can be somewhat effective at removing stains and making teeth a few shades brighter. However, many of these products have abrasive substances that can actually wear away your tooth 's enamel.
Whitening agents actually change the color of your teeth, but only are effective on certain types of stains. For example, bleaching agents have a difficult time removing brownish or grayish stains. These products also are not as effective on pitted or badly discolored teeth, or on restorations such as crowns, bridges, bonding and tooth-colored fillings (porcelain veneers or dental bonding may be more appropriate in this case).
Professional whitening performed by our office is considered to be the most effective and safest method; done properly, tooth whitening can last as long as five years. Over-the-counter whitening systems are somewhat effective as long as they are monitored and directions followed closely.
There are lots of things you can do to make sure your whitening results last as long as possible, and this will vary from person to person (six months to two years or even longer). First of all, please maintain your usual, conscientious routine of brushing and flossing every day, and keep up with your regular schedule of professional cleanings at the dental office. Avoid foods and beverages that stain, including red wine, tea and coffee. If you smoke, use your newly whitened teeth as an impetus to quit a good idea in any event! A minor touch-up every so often, either at home or at the dental office, can keep your smile bright and beautiful for years.

Both my husband and I receive our dental care from Williamsburg Family Dentiistry. We have been Dr. Dunnill's patients for ten years. My husband has especially poor teeth, but he has received superb care by Dr. Dunhill and his entire professional staff. Receiving care from Dr. Dunnill has made an impressive difference in my husband's dental health. My dental health is better, as well. I trust this practice. This dental practice accepts most dental insurance and their admin staff is unsurpassed. If there is a cancellation, the admin staff will actually contact you and ask if you want to come in sooner, which I did today. When we moved to Williamsburg, we specifically sought a dental practice that was local and independent. We made the best choice.

Dr Rubin and staff are excellent practitioners while also truly taking a genuine interest in their client's wellbeing. I moved cross country but continue to have him as my dentist and coordinate my family visits around my dental appointment.

Dr. Rubin was very reassuring and gentle while getting my tooth ready for a crown. I hate going to the dentist, but he and his staff were great. They were on time and got me right in for my appointment.
