Dr. Wilke first took up an interest in orthodontics during high school. This was due to the fact that he had worn braces as an adolescent and was accordingly impressed and intriguedby the changes made in his bite and appearance.

After graduating from Gillett High School in 1986,Dr. Wilkeentered Marquette University in Milwaukee for his undergraduate degree in biology and was accepted into the Pre-Dental Scholars Program. This program allowed Dr. Wilke to complete his undergraduate degree in three years and enter dental school the following year, obtaining his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Marquette's School of Dentistry in 1993. He was then accepted into Marquette University's Orthodontic Residency Program for two more years of specialized training in orthodontics, acquiring his Master of Science degree in 1995 and then moving to Green Bay to begin his private practice.

Dr. Wilke lives in the outskirts of Green Bay with his wife, Mary, and their three children, Melissa, James, and Stephanie. In his free time he likes spending time with family and friends and has special interests in baseball, hunting, and historical memorabilia. He also enjoys classic cars and regularly attends races at Road America during the summers, so he is also happy to carry any conversation involving Shelby Cobras and performance cars!

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has received two to three years of additional training and experience. Your orthodontist is able to straighten teeth, correct misaligned jaw structure, and improve the function of your smile.

If you want to improve the look and feel of your smile, then any age can be a great age to see the orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around the age of seven; however, orthodontic treatment is not exclusive to children and teens, with about one in every five orthodontic patients being over the age of 21. Whether you're considering treatment for yourself or for a child, any time is a good time to visit the orthodontist.

  • Keep your retainer clean, too, by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You may also soak it in denture cleaner as instructed by your orthodontist. Do not put your retainer in boiling water or in the dishwasher.
  • Avoid sticky and chewy foods (caramel, chewing gum, gummy bears), hard foods (hard candy, nuts, ice cubes), or any foods that could possibly get stuck in your braces (corn on the cob, soft bagels, ribs, taffy, etc.).
  • The amount of time spent in braces will vary depending on the individual patient, because every smile responds differently to treatment. Treatment times can take anywhere between six and 30 months, but most standard treatments take about 22 months.

With braces, you should brush your teeth at least three times a day to keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy and clean. Brushing regularly will help remove any food that may be caught between the braces. You should also floss daily to get in between your braces where your brush isn't able to reach. Your orthodontist can show you how to properly brush and floss once your braces are placed.

Yes! In fact, it's even more important that patients receiving orthodontic treatment visit their dentist regularly. With braces, food may be caught in places that your toothbrush can't reach. This causes bacteria to build up that can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Your dentist will work closely with your orthodontist to make sure that your teeth stay clean and healthy while wearing braces.

Playing an instrument or a contact sport may require some adjustment when you first get your braces, but wearing braces will not stop you from participating in any of your school activities. If you play a contact sport, it is recommended that you wear a mouthguard to protect your braces or appliance.

For most people, achieving a healthy, beautiful smile is the reason for receiving orthodontic care. Orthodontics also improves the function and bite of the teeth, improves the ability to keep the teeth clean, prevents wear, and increases the longevity of natural teeth and gum tissue while also improving cosmetic appearance.

Phase I treatment, or Early Treatment, occurs during childhood, usually before the age of 10, when baby teeth are still present. It identifies and treats young patients that will benefit from guided jaw development before starting braces through the use of expanders, tongue cribs, and space maintainers. Click here to discover more about Early Treatment.

Phase II treatment typically occurs after all permanent teeth have erupted and it is what braces are traditionally thought of. Brackets and wires are used to align the teeth into their optimal positions through targeting and correcting irregular tooth positions, spacing, crowding, and unhealthy biting relationships between the teeth. I'd say about 5 years ago I had braces. I am not from Door County but am a seasonal resident. Wilke Orthodontics took me in the same day I called to fix one of my brackets that I broke off. The staff there is absolutely outstanding and super friendly. They took really good care of me. I would definitely recommend Wilke Orthodontics to anyone looking for an Orthodontist.
