Whitney O. Shelton, D.D.S. - Pediatric dentist in Huntsville, AL

Dr. Whitney Shelton grew up in East Tennessee. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from East Tennessee State University, he attended the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center School of Dentistry in Memphis. He became interested in the unique challenges involved in Pediatric Dentistry during his first year of clinical training. He completed his training in Birmingham in the University of Alabama Pediatric Dentistry Program. While serving as a resident he worked with patients at the dental school, The Sparks Center for Developmental Learning Disorders, and The Childrens Hospital

The comprehensive residency program prepared Dr. Shelton to offer pediatric patients different treatment options to meet their individual needs. Oral sedation dentistry is one of the options, among other behavior management techniques, that help children with situational anxiety. Some patients need comprehensive dental care during outpatient surgery at the Womens and Childrens Unit of Huntsville Hospital. His specialty training included working with pediatricians, pediatric nurses, pediatric anesthesiologists, emergency medicine staff, as well as neurology, oncology and hematology specialists.

Dr. Shelton had the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream when he started private practice in Huntsville, AL. He has been on staff at Huntsville Hospital since he opened his practice. He became the first Board Certified Pediatric Dentist in North Alabama. He is a member of the Huntsville/Madison County Dental Society, the 8th District Dental Society, the Alabama Dental Association, the American Dental Association, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. He enjoys working with children of all ages from infants to young adults in college. He considers it an honor to be allowed to serve children and provide a positive impact in their lives.

Once again, we file claims as a courtesy to you.

Pediatric dentists learn about dental problems specific to children and adolescents. Their expertise in this area means that patients can be assured they are receiving the best information from a specialist. Since pediatric dentists focus on caring for childrens teeth, they keep themselves informed of the most recent advances in dental procedures for kids.

As important as the technical training they receive, pediatric dentists spend much of their time learning that children have to be treated differently from adults. They realize that some kids may not look forward to their trips to the dentist (apart from the getting out of school aspect!), and they work to make them feel comfortable.

Pediatric dentists also study child psychology so they can understand childrens needs from a different perspective. From the atmosphere of the office to the caring, professional staff, the entire practice is built around children. They realize that children are generally optimistic and have a positive attitude in most circumstances. Dr. Shelton and his staff focus on their positive attitude to help your child have the best experience possible at our office.

As children grow from infants to adolescents, their dental needs change with them. Dr. Shelton recommends that you bring your child at any age if you have a concern or see a spot, etc. Routine cleaning and exam visits should start by age 2.

With the onset of the teenage years and the importance of self-image coming to the forefront of teenagers concerns, pediatric dentists use various procedures to correct dental problems. In some cases early treatment can avoid more involved orthodontics later. Misaligned or decaying teeth can be corrected early on to help prevent later dental problems as well as improve your childs smile.

I am from out of state, and over the weekend my son had a situation that caused him a lot of pain. Early Monday morning I called this office and they were able to get my son in that day to check him out. Not only were they able to get an appointment to fix the issue, they were able to work around the funeral the I was in town for. My son is not a fan of the dentist at all and can be a handful for them, but they were very helpful and understanding and did all they could to help him be calm and help him out. The quality of work and customer service were phenomenal. If anything ever happens with my son while I'm visiting the area again, this is the only place I'll call. A huge thanks to the entire staff!

We love Dr. Shelton. He was always very good with the kids. I always had problems from the front office staff. They were usually not friendly, and it always seemed to bother them to ask for anything. They did not want to help with anything. They told me we had to have X- rays before being referred to the orthodontist,(which we had to pay for) which the orthodontist said was not true, because they always take there own X rays. I hate we had to swap because Dr. Shelton was always wonderful. Unfortunately, It was just always a nightmare having to deal with the front staff.

If money is not an issue for you, go with Dr. Sheldon, he is great. At every visit he personally called and checked on my son. The reception and dental assistant are ok, you would think since it's a pediatric dentist office they would be friendlier with the kids. They don't tell you in advance how much you will be paying until you're already there. This happened to me the first time, second time I asked to please tell me ahead of time how much I would have to pay and they said ok we'll text you and they never did, so surprised again at the time of visit. Never again we are not coming back. By the way they charge $157 for "behavior management" (for laughing gas).

My son is 4, we had a wonderful experience and the WHOLE staff was delightful. My son has started biting his nails and they helped me coach him on not doing it or trying to stop it... It was his FIRST ever appointment and they were so kind and nice to him, they had a movie on the ceiling for him to watch as they got to work. It was a really cool place. He loves it so much he wants to go back already!

If your child is the least bit apprehensive or nervous about dentist visits, this is NOT the place to take him/her. If your child protests at all during the visit, you may be charged extra. I find this unacceptable for a dentist that specializes in working with children. Also, according to a staff member, they "do not typically see special needs children." I give them 2 stars only because we were happy with the actual cleaning and evaluation. My husband and I took our 6 year old son in for a cleaning and a panoramic x-ray. We just moved to the area, so this was our first visit to this office. We had an early morning appointment, so the wait was less than 5 minutes. My husband and I were able to sit next to the cleaning station for the entire visit. My son doesn't like to lie all the way back in the chair with the light in his eyes for cleanings. He's still a little scared of the equipment and the noises they make, so not seeing what is going to happen makes him anxious. When the hygienist started moving the chair, he sat up and told her he didn't like that. He was whiny about it, but he was not panicking, crying, or screaming. She tried for a few minutes to convince him it was OK to lay back, but he just didn't want to do it. So, she let him stand up for the cleaning. We appreciated that she compromised with him on that in order to make the visit a positive one for him. He laid back in the chair without hesitation for the dentist to "count" (check) his teeth. He cooperated fully for the panoramic x-ray. We felt that the hygienist and the dentist were very good with our son. We were happy with the service. However, we received a bill with a "sedation" charge of $50. My son did not receive any type of sedation. When my husband called to inquire, he was told that it was labeled incorrectly. It was supposed to be a charge for some sort of "behavior" assistance. They said it was because our son was not cooperative and they had to call in an additional staff member to calm him down. Since my husband and I were right next to our son the entire time, we knew this was not true. If he had needed calming down, we would have done it as we were right there. My husband asked that the charge be removed, but the office refused. I called the next day to get more details about exactly what this other person supposedly did. The staff member didn't have any specific details, only that someone else was called in to assist with my son. I told the staff member exactly what happened that day, that my son was a bit apprehensive about the cleaning, but no one else had to be brought in to assist. I asked if it is the office's standard practice to charge extra if a child is apprehensive or scared. The staff member's reply to me was, "We don't typically see special needs children." I informed her that my child does not have special needs, but simply acted how any child, with or without special needs, might act under the circumstances.
