Dr. Johnson received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology and chemistry from East Tennessee State University in 1963. After undergrad, he served in the military as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Service Corporation at Fort Knox in Kentucky for two years. Following his time in Fort Knox, he served in the Army reserves while completing his dental degree at the University of Tennessee.
