Dr. Scanlon is a 2008 graduate of Creighton University School of Dentistry located in Omaha, Nebraska. He graduated with honors, receiving the American Academy of Periodontology Dental Student Award, the International Congress of Oral Implantologists Dental Predoctoral Achievement Award, and the Quintessence Award for student research.
His residency in periodontics was completed in 2011 at the Medical University of South Carolina located in Charleston where he served as chief resident. His program included training in advanced periodontal therapy, bone grafting, implant therapy, and IV sedation.
He is a Diplomate to the American Board of Periodontology, a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, the South Dakota Dental Association, the Black Hills District Dental Society, and the Academy of Osseointegration.
He and his wife Amy have two daughters and reside in Rapid City. When not treating patients, Chuck enjoys spending time with his family and being in the outdoors as much as possible. He is an avid hunter, skier, and fisherman.
Dr. Mattie Bertels began her career in dentistry as a dental hygienist. After working with periodontal patients in private practice, she decided to further her education with a degree in dentistry. Mattie graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Dentistry in 2017. Immediately following, she stayed at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Department of Surgical Specialties, where she completed a three-year Periodontal Residency.
Dr. Bertels is excited to relocate to Rapid City. Originally from western Nebraska, Mattie and her husband, Aaron, are looking forward to raising their three young children in the Black Hills. She enjoys cooking, playing the piano and spending time with her family.
At West River Periodontics, our patients are our first priority. Our team includes a dedicated hygienist for periodontal cleanings, an implant treatment coordinator to plan and guide our implant patients through their care, certified assistants aiding Dr. Scanlon during procedures, and caring front office staff to accommodate your scheduling, financial and insurance needs. Amazing customer service from all of the dental care associates! Dr Scanlon took excellent care of me in my unique situation and was able to problem solve and develop a plan of care. Mary gave my anesthetic without very much discomfort, and Jade kept informed about the procedures that I had.

This place is where you need to go for all your periodontal needs. Dr. Bertels is very professional and caring. The entire staff, from the assistants to the front desk and receptionist, are so nice and go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable.

I know that I have been in a lot of Dental offices,but The West River Periodontics & Implant Office has the best staff that you can ever imagine.
