Dr. Shakun graduated from the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Dental Medicine in 1986. In addition to receiving his doctorate in general dentistry, Dr. Shakun received the dental materials award. Dr. Shakun spent the next year completing a general practice residency at the University Of Pennsylvania Dental Care facility. This program provided a unique opportunity to work with some of the most accomplished, recognized general dentists and specialists in the profession. Spanning from 1987 until the present, Dr. Shakun has been dedicated to providing quality dental care throughout the local community. In addition to providing excellent clinical care, Dr. Shakun has been a member in good standing of the American Dental Association, the Connecticut State Dental society, and the Hartford Dental Society. Dr. Shakun has also completed numerous programs and continuing education courses, including advanced courses in cosmetic dentistry and implant dentistry as well. Dr. Shakuns philosophy, with regard to dental care, emphasizes practical solutions to providing optimal health as well as preventive care. Additionally, Dr. Shakun has had extensive experience and training in pain management, and dental fears. Dr. Shakun has been married for more than 20 years and is a proud father of three wonderful children. Dr. Shakun is passionate about the outdoors and enjoys telemark skiing, windsurfing, and fishing.
Dr. Patel grew up in Southern New Hampshire where she enjoyed everything that New England has to offer. Her studies took her to McGill University in Montreal, Quebec where she received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Biochemistry. She then came back home to the United States to attend the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine where she received her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree.
Following dental school, Dr. Patel completed a General Practice Residency at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, CT. During her hospital-based residency program, she received additional training in various facets of general dentistry. She furthered her knowledge in the care of medically compromised patient and management of dental trauma and emergencies. Dr. Patel is passionate about being a life long learner and educator and has committed to continuing her education throughout her professional career.
Dr. Patel is a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Connecticut State Dental Association. She has participated in various volunteer efforts including a dental service trip to Guatemala, Connecticut Mission of Mercy, and Special Olympics among many others.

It's been a bad year for my teeth. I've had old fillings break, and then break again, and with my insurance also changing recently, I've been hopping around between different dental offices and it's been truly a pain. I feel MUCH better after finding this office. I came in to have a broken filling fixed, and the experience couldn't have been smoother. I felt welcome and very secure in the fact that I'd be well-cared for. The novocaine shots were administered very well with minimal pain, and the actual procedure was painless and fast. The dentist and dental assistant (hygeinest?) also took great care when adjusting the final bite. Even though West Hartford Family Dental is not in-network for my current insurance plan, I will be returning here as much as possible, including for a cleaning which has already been scheduled. Absolutely wonderful experience - clean, professional office with a friendly atomosphere from waiting room to dental chair. They even provided me with a courtesy 10% discount due to not using insurance. I don't know if they can always do this, but it was a nice surprise to save a little out-of-pocket. This is a 10/10 business. Good work y'all, keep it up!

Always an amazing experience at West Hartford Family Dentistry. All of the staff - front desk, hygienists, dentists, etc are all extremely friendly and personable. Rachel and Dr. Patel were phenomenal and Tammy (my hygienist last time I went 13 months ago pre-covid) even popped in to say hi. This group makes going to the dentist (a feared thing among many people) very, very easy. 10/10 would recommend.

I had to go to different dental practice because West Hartford Family Dentistry was out-of-network for my present insurance coverage. However, after I was no longer a patient, I experienced a problem with a crown that WHFD had installed over my dental implant. The problem was caused by me -- too much jaw pressure during sleep had loosened the crown. Even though I was no longer a patient, WHFD fixed the problem -- without charge! And they were able to squeeze me in right away, as I had informed them that I was leaving the country within a few days. I was both surprised and impressed. If it weren't for the insurance coverage issue, I would still be with WHFD.

I had to go to different dental practice because West Hartford Family Dentistry was out-of-network for my present insurance coverage. I've been a patient of West Hartford Family Dentistry for years and yesterday I had an appointment with Rachel (one of the dental hygienist - for the first time) and she was amazing. Very friendly, compassionate, concerned about the care of my teeth and suggested recommendations that were practical for maintaining the care of my teeth (Teresa's usually my dental hygienist and she too is amazing). I also saw Dr. Shakun. I really appreciate his kind and compassionate care for his patients. He is one of the best dentist anyone could ever ask for. Prior to coming to this practice I was very ambiguous about seeing dentists, because of some bad experiences, but they have made me feel so comfortable that I look forward to coming to my appointments now. The staff are amazing here - at every level. I appreciate their professionalism and kind approach to Dentistry. I would be remiss not to mention the fact that the office also has great covid-19 rules and precautions in place to protect everyone, which made me feel very safe. Thank you all for your great work ethic and care of your patients!
