Dr. Joe Wertz attended the University of Iowa for his undergraduate studies and continued his education at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry where he graduated with his Doctorof Dental Surgery in 2010. Since graduation, Dr. Joe has continued his study of general dentistry through numerous continuing education courses every year. Dr. Joes commitment to dentistry continues with his memberships to the Iowa Dental Association, Dubuque Dental Society, American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Chicago Dental Society and Great River Implant Study Club.
When Dr. Joe is away from the office during the summer months, you can find him on the waterways of Iowa with his family and friends boating, tubing, skiing, jet skiing, fishing and generally spending time outdoors! In the winter months, Dr. Joe spends his time in his garage wrenching on his vintage stand-up jet skis, always attempting to get them running a little faster. While working on his jet skis, his motto is if it is not broken, fix it until it is!
Dr. Mark Schemmel, a native of Dubuque, attended Saint Norbert College inDe Pere, Wisconsin for his undergraduate studieswhere he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in science in2014. Following college, Dr. Mark began his dental education at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry and graduated in 2018 with his Doctorof Dental Surgery.Dr. Mark is active in the dental community as a member of the American Dental Association, Iowa Dental Association Dubuque Chapter,where he serves as Vice President, Chicago Dental Society, Dubuque Dental Society, where he serves as Treasurer,and The Academy of General Dentistry.
Dr. Mark's wife, Chandler (Flynn), is a native of the Dubuque area and is the manager of Orangetheory Fitness Dubuque. When not in the office, Dr. Mark enjoys spending time traveling with family, watching any and all sporting events, and walking with Chandler and their Goldendoodle, Blanche.

My dental work has been performed at Wertz & Schemmel for some years now. I'm always highly satisfied with their professionalism and kindness. They also cared for my very elderly mother before her passing several years ago. Their competent care for her demonstrated their desire to serve the needs of all.

I have been going to the same dentist Office for about 35 years or more. First I started seeing Tom Wertz now that he is retired his son Richard Wertz is my dentist and I would highly recommend him. The staff is great always friendly. I wouldn't go anywhere else

From the admitting desk personnel, to Claire, who cleaned my teeth, to interaction with Dr. Schemmel, this place is superb! Professional, friendly, caring staff who are genuine and welcoming. Who ever thought you should ENJOY going the dentist, but I do!

I've been going to Wertz & Schemmel for about 3 years. Every visit has been met with friendly staff who has provided great dental work. In the past I've gone to dentists who seemed to push me to have dental procedures done if they thought I needed them. Joe respectfully brings forward any procedures he thinks I should get done (along with the pricing of the procedures) and leaves it up to me to decide.

Low waiting room time, Office attendants are friendly. Michelle is gentle and very thorough and accommodating. Dr. Joe is a happy smiley friendly dentist who checks and explains any issues very well. Thank you for your great services through out the past years.
