That really solidified that I needed to do something down the medical route, Slezak says of his Peru trip. We set up a clinic in one of the more impoverished neighborhoods within the city of Lima. I worked with an emergency medicine physician and we saw a lot of people with common urgent care complaints. I also worked with an ophthalmologist and helped him with some procedures.
Slezak and his wife met in Peru while he was on his mission trip. She worked as a translator. After his mission trip, the two stayed connected, built a strong friendship and were married nearly three years later.
Then we had our first child between our first and second year of medical school and our second child between third and fourth year. A lot of folks will wait until after medical training to have children but I was already a little older starting medical school.
After earning his medical degree, Slezak completed his internship and residency in otolaryngology at the University of Kentucky School of Medicine. During this time, Slezak and his wife had two more children.
There are certain conditions that are really only addressed from a surgical standpoint. One of the beauties of ENT is that theres a lot of things we can treat effectively just with medication alone. So, its trying to find that balance of not being overly aggressive with surgery and doing the right thing for the patient and if that means medication is the best option, then thats what we go with.

Today, Adamson is a plastic surgeon with Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic. She offers a full range of plastic surgery services including advanced breast reconstruction. Microvascular breast reconstruction is of particular interest for her.
Specifically DIEP flaps, she says. This is a procedure where you can use your abdominal tissue to make a breast after mastectomy and so tissue you normally throw away from a tummy tuck, you use. Its a great option for the right patient.
I loved it. I loved the variety of the day, Adamson says of her surgical rotations. We rounded in the hospital, we went to the operating room, we saw patients in clinic. Definitely I had more of a connection with patients than I expected a surgeon could.
Plastic surgery interested me because I could work with trauma patients, cancer patients but be the person who is giving good news, usually, Adamson says. Breast cancer patients have always been special to me. Seeing them go through a hard time and getting to be the one who gets to the other side (with them).
I think that its super important to listen to the patients. I definitely try to understand where theyre coming from or put myself in their shoes, if possible, she says. I think that I am an empathetic person. I think its important as a physician to have empathy.
Adamson completed fellowship training in microsurgery at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. She is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is an American College of Surgeons fellow.
Yeah, I have a couple still coming out, she says. I do enjoy reading and writing. I think it brings me back to a younger version of myself. I think that its important to give back to the medical literature, the people who are training and make things better for the next generation and the next patients.
I enjoy bicycling because of the freedom it brings to me. Its a time where I can clear my head and enjoy the time on the bicycle which for me brings me back to a younger age when I first started riding bikes.
It is my favorite way to get outside, feel alive, and explore the countryside. Cycling also is a great way to get cardiovascular exercise with less of a toll on the knees and hips than many other activities.
I love biking because I really enjoy the feeling of freedom in the outdoors during a ride and also the sense of accomplishment once I am finished. I love knowing that I can travel many miles under my own power. Taking in beautiful scenery along the way is another added benefit!
Riding a bicycle is a great way to spend time outdoors while improving your physical and mental health. When riding a bicycle, it is extremely important to wear a bike helmet as it can help prevent serious head injuries. As an avid bicyclist, I never leave home without mine!
