Dr. Valis was born in Guatemala City, Guatemala as his parents were serving with the U.S. State Department. He grew up traveling to different countries and lived in South America and Europe. He graduated high school from The American School in London. Afterward, he moved to the U.S. to attend Virginia Commonwealth University where he earned a B.S. in biology and chemistry.
In 1995, Dr. Valis decided it was time to get out of the city and move to South Carolina. The Valis family spent the next 12 years in Spartanburg, SC. Ready for a new challenge, Dr. Valis purchased Baker Dental and moved his family to Rock Hill, SC. To put a fresh spin on this growing, vibrant dental practice, he renamed it Waters Edge Family Dental, making it a full-service family dentistry office that offers cosmetic dentistry, dental surgery, and a comfortable environment.
Joanna has been a part of the practice since 1994. She is a graduate of Southern Illinois University and followed her parents to South Carolina after graduation. Joanna lived in Charleston for the beginning of her career until moving to Rock Hill in 1994. She has been married to her husband for almost 16 years and has three grown children. Joanna enjoys yardwork, walking with her dog, Jordyn, reading, and most of all, anytime she gets to see her three beautiful grandchildren who live in Texas. Joanna enjoys working with and educating her patients on their overall health as well as their dental health.
Tammy has worked in the dental field for 28 years as a Certified Dental Assistant. Tammy joined the Waters Edge Family Dental team in 2018 and currently works in our front office. She enjoys helping and interacting with our patients. Tammy grew up locally and resides in Rock Hill with her husband and two grown children. A lover of animals, she has three dogs, Max, Jake, and Kamikaze. She enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and traveling.
Susan is a native of Rock Hill, SC. She has been a dental hygienist for 22 years and has worked at Waters Edge for almost 10 years. She has 2 daughters, ages 22, and 19. She likes reading, shopping, and cooking. She also enjoys being at Sunset Beach with her husband and spending time with her family. She loves seeing her patients and goofing around with her co-workers.
Cathy has been with the practice since 1995. She was a graduate of the very first dental assisting class offered by York Technical College in 1979. She grew up in Indian Land and lived in Athens, GA for 16 years. She and her husband Joel have two teenage boysTrey and Will. They enjoy traveling, love the beach, animated movies, and spending time with their extended family. They treasure their time as volunteers with the Area 11 Special Olympics and look forward to when Miracle Park opens to full capacity.

Long story, but the short story is: They want to pull a tooth that isn't bothering me and not the one with the issue. The tooth bothering me is on the top and the one they want to pull is on the bottom. Dr. Valis was very rude. Update: Because I don't know how to respond to the doctor's comment, I would like to tell the long story. I scheduled an appointment for a toothache. They took x-rays. The doctor came in and looked at the x-rays and the tooth giving me issues (upper left, next to the wisdom tooth). He said "we have talked about a root canal on that tooth before." I agreed we had. He said you can have it pulled or do a root canal. I wanted to think about it and called back the next week to set up a root canal. This is when the error began. They kept talking about my bottom wisdom tooth. They would not listen to me when I tried explaining that is the wrong tooth. I then scheduled an appointment to discuss with Dr. Valis the confusion but he insisted my problem was my bottom wisdom tooth. When I insisted he look at my top tooth he did, poked around on it and could see it causing me pain when he did, he just put the tools down said "we will need to refer you to an endodontist " and walked out of the room. He did not come into the office to discuss anything. He had a closed mind because of what he saw in my chart and would not be open minded and listen to me. I do not know if my chart was mixed up with someone else's or what but the doctor and staff would not listen to me. I never scheduled any kind of procedure as the response suggests; all I scheduled was an appointment for a discussion about the confusion.

I have been coming here many years. I believe almost 10 years now. I have never had a bad experience. Dr. Valis is by far the best dentist I've ever had. His team and practice is top notch. Unfortunately, I have moved to the lowcountry of South Carolina and will be unable to keep coming here. I will miss the care I received from my dental hygienist, Joanna, and Dr. Valis. If you need a great dentist, make your appointment here.

I have been coming here many years. I believe almost 10 years now. I have never had a bad experience. Dr. Valis is by far the best dentist I've ever had. His team and practice is top notch. Unfortunately, I have moved to the lowcountry of South Carolina and will be unable to keep coming here. I will miss the care I received from my dental hygienist, Joanna, and Dr. Valis. I've been coming here for almost 10 years. I came here after another local dentist messed up a crown and other procedure. I couldn't be happier with the services here. I've never felt more comfortable with a dentist. Dr Valis has great manner, and has always been considerate of my limitations (esophagus spasms and gag-reflex). The entire staff is friendly and extremely good at what they do.
