Dr. Craig Winkelmann attended West Virginia University graduating Cum Laude with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He then completed a Master degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Harris Corporation as an engineer and project manager. He then worked at IBM Corporation as a Client Representative and Large Systems Marketing Representative.
Dr. Winkelmann left IBM to attend dental school at the University of Maryland. He completed his education graduating Magna Cum Laude. He earned several scholarships and academic achievements including being selected for Omicron Kappa Upsilon the National Dental Honorary. During his time in dental school, Dr. Winkelmann traveled to Arizona to provide care for elders of the Navajo Nation. Additionally, he was selected by the International College of Dentists to travel to Ireland for 30 days as an ambassador of goodwill and to observe how dentistry is delivered in Ireland.
After dental school, Dr. Winkelmann attended a two-year dental residency at the VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. There he was exposed to and mentored in advanced dental treatment. He is IV sedation trained and holds the Advanced Cardiac Life Support credentials.
Dr. Winkelmann is a member of the American Dental Association, the North Carolina Dental Society, the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and is a General Member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He has distinguished himself by earning Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. An accomplishment achieved by less than ten percent of all dentists. Additionally, Dr. Winkelmann has been selected as one of Americas Top Dentists by an independent review board on multiple occasions including 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021 and again in 2022.
In the field of Dental Sleep Medicine, Dr. Winkelmann has earned the distinction of being a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Winkelmann enjoys this area of practice and its life-changing effects on his patients.
He lives in Cary with his son, who he adores, and one white cat named Buster. He has been and continues to be active in the Boy Scouts of America. He served as a Bear and Webelows Den Leader in Pack 393 and is now an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 216. Prior to Boy Scouts, Dr. Winkelmann volunteered with Civil Air Patrol and served as an Instructor Pilot and Chief Check Pilot. He is also the founder of the Bandit Flight Team that can be seen at NCSU football game openings. His hobbies and interested are muscle cars from the 60s and 70s, aviation and the outdoors.

I've been going to WFDA since my kids were very little, we've trusted them with all their cleanings, fillings etc. now comes my time with teeth issues, I've had several root canals with them already. I was in yesterday with a major milestone of pulling a tooth and starting the process of a bridge. The care they gave me was above anything I've ever experienced. I am not a fan of dental work, and even with the anxiety and emotional visit, The team was compassionate and still continued to treat me as family. If you have a fear of dental treatment of any kind, go here. Dr. Winkleman is very smart and caring as is the staff. They will make your visit as comfortable as possible. Thank you.

My family and I have been seeing Dr. Winkelmann at Wake Forest Dental Arts for many years. He is the best! Kind, gentle, caring, knowledgeable and very professional! Love all the hygienists there as well. Wonderful staff and a very relaxing environment. Highly recommend A+++

I was having a problem with one of my teeth. My dental insurance recently changed and they were accepting new patients and very helpful in making sure all the work was covered by my insurance. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The dental assistant was very nice and personable. I will definitely return.

Over 70 and have been to many different dentist over the years, finally have found one I have 100% confidence in. The staff are caring, kind and professional as is Dr. Winkleman. I am very thankful and happy to have found WFDA, wish I had found them much sooner.

Tammy does an excellent job cleaning my teeth. Scaling my teeth has restored gum health beyond what I thought would be possible and other dentist kept telling me there was nothing that could be done. I am very grateful for the care Wake Forest Dental Arts has given me. Thank you.

From the moment you walk in the office you feel great to be at the dentist. The front office staff are friendly knowledgeable and very helpful. Dr. Winkleman is a wonderful dentist. He fast but thorough. They use the best technology so your appointments are as easy as can be. If you get Trevor for you dental assistant you are in for a treat! He is helpful, explains things as he goes and helps make the visit enjoyable. I highly suggest Wake Forest Dental Arts for the whole family!

I was impressed with our first visit. My son and I had cleanings; hygienists were professional, thorough and pleasant. Dr. Winkleman told me that an old filling I have can be easily replaced, where as at my previous dental office, 2 dentists told me I needed crowns on two teeth to repair it.

This was my first time here. I have high anxiety when going to the dentist. Although I did have a little episode, the staff were very patient and understanding and put me at ease. Will definitely recommend and will be going back and that's something I have never said before!

I've been coming to this dental office since the beginning of the year and have never had a bad experience. Today I went to get a tooth pulled out that was bothering me and Trevor and Dr. Winkleman really were the bomb.com. Trevor advised me to breath and really help the process go smoothly. I have a bad case of anxiety when it comes to doctor visits of any kind. And Trevor reassured me that right then and there that I was in the best hands. He definitely gave me some valuable information on the importance of teeth care. See you guys in a few weeks

Invisalign here? Forget it! IMO they are inexperienced, it is not a priority. Serious Lack of communication and short staffed. Other dental work is ok.

Yesterday was my first appointment when I had to have drilling done for a cavity here. I have a high level of dental anxiety. The oral medication that I was given for sedation and was instructed to take an hour before the visit had no effect (this has happened with other meds for me). Without missing a beat, they were able to offer me nitrous oxide while I had the work done, and it absolutely saved the day! They were so understanding and efficient and professional throughout my appointment, checking in with me several times to ask if I was ok, and taking their time to be sure that I was. As a medical professional and bona fide "dental-phobe", I am pleased to recommend Dr. Craig and the rest of the staff at this practice to all!
