Waimnalo Health Center is rooted in Native Hawaiian values and devoted to improving the health and wellness of all people, regardless of ability to pay, by providing comprehensive primary and preventive health care services of the highest quality.

Waimnalo Health Center is dedicated to the continuous advancement in quality healthcare while assuring universal access for all. We believe that our values of Aloha, Mlama I Ka Pono, Mlama I Ka Ohana, and Mlama I Ka ina, enable our patient-centered healthcare home services to deeply focus on the shared role of healing oneself, ohana, community, and ina over generations.

Our values at Waimnalo Health Center promote Hawaiian-centered diversity, equity, and inclusion by welcoming all members of the Koolaupoko community to access our holistic services ranging from traditional Hawaiian healing practices to Western medicine.

Aloha: We listen to people with our full attention, seeking to know them and understand their health care and wellness needs and aspirations for themselves, their family and community. We will respond, to the best of our abilities, as caring, compassionate, engaged, and professional partners in healthcare.

Mlama I Ka Pono: We know that quality healthcare starts with peoples trust in our services and the excellence of our care for them and the resources entrusted to us to meet their needs. We are committed to maintaining their trust by treating people with respect and confidentiality, and by being open about our organizational practices and results, seeking to continuously improve our work.

Mlama I Ka Ohana: We believe that wellness embraces the whole family, and we welcome their participation in the healthcare of their loved ones. Our belief extends from the Ahupuaa of Waimnalo throughout Koolaupoko where we build the foundation for good health and wellness for everyone, and we seek collaborative partners who share our values and vision.

Mlama I Ka ina: We understand the importance of ones sense of place and the holistic nature of health and wellbeing. Through integrative services we support the balance of body, mind, and spirit, while respecting ones cultural connectedness to the ina of Hawai'i. Ka Mauli O Ka ina A He Mauli Knaka: The Life of the Land is the Life of the People.

WHC was conceptualized by a group of women who led a health service committee in 1988 in Waimnalo. The group advocated for continued health services in Waimnalo after a State Department of Health demonstration project was to be closed after 23 years of service. Founders Patricia Heu, Madi Silverman, Eve Anderson, Kawahine Kamakea-Ohelo and Mabel Ann Spencer represented the community to advocate for a local health center in Waimnalo. After incorporation in 1989, facility construction and the hiring of professional staff, Waimnalo Health Center saw its first patient in January 1992 and became a federally qualified health center in 1994. Since then, WHC has continued advocating for community health and expanded services to meet the needs of its patients.

Dr. Charman J. Akina was instrumental in building the foundation of Waimnalo Health Center and shaping our values of mlama, pono, and ohana. He joined us in 1993 to provide his medical expertise and knowledge. He volunteered countless hours, serving as a physician, medical director, and later, as the Honorary Chair for the Ola I Ka Wai Campaign. The campaign raised funds for the much-needed new medical building, Hale Ola Alua, that opened in May 2019. Sadly, Dr. Akina passed before the buildings completion, but we were honored to dedicate the second floor in his memory as a tribute to his lasting impact that still inspires today.

In August 2020, a kapa art was placed in the main walkway to The Dr. Charman J. Akina MD Memorial Floor. The artwork was commissioned in Dr. Akinas honor with the generosity of the Nancy and Raymond Schoenke Charitable Foundation Inc. and the Victoria S. and Bradley L. Geist Foundation, and is appropriately named Ka Wailele Ola, The Healing Waterfall.

About the Artwork: Ka Wailele Ola, The Healing Waterfall, is a kapa wauke art piece by Waimnalo artist Page Chang. Ka Wailele Ola connects the upper and lower levels of Waimnalo Health Center. The design represents the wailele, waterfalls, of the Waimnalo Koolau that connect the life-giving water from the clouds to the ina, the streams, and the ocean below. The lelo noeau Ola i ka wai a ka pua, there is life in the water from the clouds, is the inspiration for the Waimnalo Health Center logo, and an inspiration for this piece. The water designs symbolize the care, life, and healing of this place.
