Only your dentist or orthodontist can determine whether you can benefit from orthodontics. Based on diagnostic tools that include a full medical and dental health history, a clinical exam, plaster models of your teeth, and special X-rays and photographs, an orthodontist or dentist can decide whether orthodontics are recommended, and develop a treatment plan thats right for you.

An improper bite doesnt look good. That is the usual reason people seek treatment from an orthodontist. In addition, an improper bite causes difficulty in chewing. In people with crowded teeth, it can lead to more cavities or gum disease. Treatment of an irregular bite can improve your overall oral health and stabilize your bite.

  • Crossbite Here, the upper teeth rest significantly inside or outside the lower teeth. A crossbite often can make it difficult to bite or chew. It also may cause the jaw to shift to one side as it grows.
  • Crowding Permanent teeth may not have room to move into the right position: If there is not enough room for the teeth If the teeth are unusually large compared with the size of the dental arch If the jaw is narrower than it should be
  • Deep overbite This occurs when the upper front teeth (incisors) overlap too far over the lower teeth. In some cases, the biting edges of the upper teeth touch the lower front gum tissue and the lower front teeth may bite into the roof of the mouth.
  • Underbite A crossbite of the front teeth is commonly referred to as an underbite if the lower teeth are ahead of the upper teeth. This may also be a sign that the jaws are not in the correct position. Sometimes surgery is needed.
  • Openbite If your upper and lower front teeth dont meet when you bite down, this is called an openbite. This may make it impossible to bite off food with the front teeth. It also can affect speech. Because the front teeth dont share equally in the biting force, the back teeth may receive too much pressure. This makes chewing less efficient. It can lead to premature wear of the back teeth.
  • Spacing problems Some people have missing teeth or unusually small teeth in a normal sized jaw. This can result in large spaces between the teeth. People who have lost one or multiple teeth may have uneven spacing because adjacent teeth may drift into the unoccupied areas. Braces can be used to shift the position of these teeth so the missing tooth or teeth can be replaced.
  • Many different types of appliances, both fixed and removable, are used to help move teeth, retrain muscles and affect the growth of the jaws. These appliances work by placing gentle pressure on the teeth and jaws. The severity of your problem will determine which orthodontic approach is likely to be the most effective.

  • Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea is typically indicated by snoring and often awakening during sleep gasping for breath. Sleep apnea causes restless nights and drowsiness during the daytime hours. Sleep apnea can also lead to more serious health issues including increased blood pressure and the restriction of oxygen to the brain and blood stream.
  • Braces the most common fixed appliances, braces consist of bands, wires and/or brackets. Bands are fixed around the teeth or tooth and used as anchors for the appliance, while brackets are most often bonded to the front of the tooth. Arch wires are passed through the brackets and attached to the bands. Tightening the arch wire puts tension on the teeth, gradually moving them to their proper position. Todays braces are smaller, lighter and show far less metal than in the past.
  • Space Maintainers if a baby tooth is lost prematurely, a space maintainer is used to keep the space open until the permanent tooth erupts. A band is attached to the tooth next to the empty space, and a wire is extended to the tooth on the other side of the space.
  • Palatal expander a device used to widen the arch of the upper jaw. It is a plastic plate that fits over the roof of the mouth. Outward pressure applied to the plate by screws force the joints in the bones of the palate to open lengthwise, widening the palatal area.
  • Headgear with this device, a strap is placed around the back of the head and attached to a metal wire in front, or face bow. Headgear slows the growth of the upper jaw, and holds the back teeth where they are while the front teeth are pulled back.
  • Archwire: The metal wire that acts as a track to guide your teeth along as they move. It is changed periodically throughout treatment as your teeth move to their new positions. Band: A metal ring that is cemented to your tooth, going completely around it. Bands provide a way to attach brackets to your teeth.
  • Impressions: The process of making a model of your teeth by biting into a soft material that hardens into a mold of your teeth. Your orthodontist will use these impressions to prepare your treatment plan.

I love Dr. Micheals and the entire staff here. I always recieve great service. They send appointment reminders 1 week before and 1 day prior to visit. These days there are lots of new faces but the same great service. I am always pleased with my cleaning. Been going her 8 years now and they do excellent work. I am also excited about the expansion. They added Orthadonist services. I always hated the distance of the referral. I can't wait to see what the addition will be like. The only complaint I have us having to fill out the form every 6 months. I think a technology update is past due. It would go more swiftly if there were check in tablets or if papers could be filled out online prior to appointment. The staff techs and dental hygienist are extremely professional. I love their child friendly atmosphere and the play room is helpful for anxious kids. I am please after each visit. Again I can't Express enough how excited I am about the orthodontist addition. It is a wonderful pay system and they also have carepay just in case you need yo pay over time. My favorite part is it's right here in my neighborhood.

My daughter has been going there for the past 12 years and the first time within those 12 years I was late to a appointment by 1 or 2 minutes they rescheduled my appointment . The new girl at the front was real nasty about it she even lied and said the reason I didn't get a confirmation call was due to my phone being disconnected. I've waited in the lobby on several occasions for over 30 minutes and I've never complained then the moment I'm a few minutes late due to not getting a reminder about my appointment I get rescheduled

I called in to get information. I got lucky and was connected with Bradley. He was super helpful and answered all of my questions! His customer service skills are on point! If this is the kind of people that they have working for them, I would definitely reccomend 10 out of 10!!! Bradley, it was a pleasure talking to you!!!

The two receptionists who were NOT behind a glass partition, NOT more than six feet away, and NOT wearing masks insisted that I wear a mask. That's pretty stupid even without considering that I'm fully vaccinated. They also wanted me to fill out a complete medical history packet... for a routine teeth cleaning. This is after making me wait nearly a month and a half for the appointment. Get common sense, guys.

Rescheduled twice this year without being seen! The reason is because it's only one dentist. My kids first appointment here in Alabama & the lady that calls to make those calls are rude . No sympathy whatsoever she hung the phone up on me without a third rescheduled appointment.

This company is the worst with communicating, my daughter had an appointment in January, I received zero reminder as most doctors do, so they rescheduled her appointment for today 4/4/2022. I spoke with someone last week to confirm it, I also confirmed the email they sent me. I get a call at work from this office.they didn't leave a voicemail, so I called back, as usual no one answer and I get their call center that tells me someone canceled my daughter's appointment... how can someone do that when I'm the point of contact. The only good thing about this company is the doctors. I could say more, but this is the most current issue I have had with them, but it definitely wasn't the only one.

(Translated by Google) My first appointment is terrible and they give it to me at 11 and when I show up they tell me that it will be canceled because it was at 1030 because the center put the wrong time. I missed my work day for nothing. (Original) Pesimo mi primera cita y me la dan a las 11 y cuando me presento me dicen q va a ser cancelada pq era a las 1030 pq el centro puso la hora equivocada. Perdi mi dia de trabajo para nada.

******I had to update my review***** A lady from Vital Smiles actually saw my review and looked into things and is making it right. My kids and I really liked the doctors and a lot of the people in the back. I'd totally give 5 stars if some of the ladies up front were nicer. *****My son is covered under two insurances and I've never had to pay out of pocket at appointments. I took my son here and they made me pay them $50. I later called my insurance and they told me I shouldn't have had to pay anything. I don't trust this place anymore.

Dr. Duke was amazing with my 10 year old son and also her assistant, I didn't catch his name. He went in for his first cavity to be filled and was a bit nervous. But she told him everything she was about to do and showed him everything she was about to put in his mouth so there were no unpleasant surprises. I highly recommend this place and definitely Dr. Duke.

Everyone was so nice! My son was happy and I was very pleased!!!! They kept good practices for social distancing, checking temperatures and spraying sanitizer on hands before patients were taken back. In the room patients were distanced from eachother, masks were worn and hands were washed. Very wonderful service! Thank you

The finance company that Vital Smiles Huntsville is working with, truly is really pathetic to say the least. I would think because "Vital Smiles" accepts Medicaid and services an immense number of those insurance patients ; They would have a better finance company than they do. But it is a separate practice and the ortho seems to use that name to partner with. They have no leeway if you encounter a financial hardship and are unable to pay or of you get behind on payments. They expect you to still pay with no service.Or pay at least 1/2 of what you owe. I won't recommend this to anyone.
