Advanced restorative and cosmetic dentistry requires hundreds of hours of postgraduate training. It may surprise you to learn that most dental schools do not teach courses in cosmetic or advanced restorative dentistry, and the few that do are limited to a few introductory courses. Gifted with an artistic eye, a rigorous program of over 2000 hours of postgraduate training and a relentless pursuit of excellence, Dr. Johnson Hagood has surpassed the ordinary and achieved the extraordinary through the art of dentistry.

Since 1991, Dr. Hagood has provided contemporary dental services to the Vero Beach area, and utilizes the latest in dental techniques, technology, and materials. He has advanced training and credentials in the areas of preventive dentistry, restorative dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, TMJ disorder treatment, and implant dentistry. He has extensive experience in whole mouth restoration for predictably long-lasting optimal health, function, and appearance.

A native of North Carolina, Dr. Hagood earned a B.S. degree in Biology from East Carolina University and a Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. His professional achievements are numerous, making him one of the highest credentialed dentists in the United States. He has completed hundreds of hours of advanced dental education, including numerous courses at The Pankey Institute, The Dawson Academy, Spear Education, and The Eubank Institute. He is the author of numerous articles in dental journals and a frequent lecturer on advanced dental procedures.

In addition to providing his patients with the finest dentistry, Dr. Hagood has other passions, including surfing, photography, playing the guitar, and oil painting. His painting are displayed throughout our state-of-the-art dental facility. Dr. Hagood is married to the true love of his life, Dana, and they have two fine young children Alex and Bayne. They are members of Trinity Episcopal Church in Vero Beach, where he currently serves as the Junior Warden and a Lay Eucharistic Minister.

Dr. Hagood is conveniently located in Vero Beach. Because of his reputation for expertise in cosmetic dentistry and his patient-centered philosophy of care, patients come to him from communities throughout the Treasure Coast, Space Coast, and Central Florida, including the communities of Sebastian, Ft. Pierce, Port St. Lucie, Windsor, Stuart, Johns Island, Orchid, Indian River Shores, Palm Bay, Melbourne, Hutchinson Island, and Merritt Island, and Orlando.

To create a beautiful and natural looking smile, a Restorative and Cosmetic Dentist must be more than an excellent technician. To achieve picture-perfect smiles, a dentist also must be an artist. We hope you enjoy a sample of paintings by M. Johnson Hagood, DDS, of Vero Beach, FL.

Dr. Johnson Hagood and his team at Vero Beach Art of Dentistry believe in providing patients with personalized and thorough care to prevent and predictably treat dental problems. Dr. Hagood has such a passion for optimal function and esthetics that your dental restorations, or perhaps, complete smile makeover will be naturally beautiful, comfortable, and long-lasting.

In addition to the care, skill, and knowledge needed to produce world-class dentistry, having the latest technological tools is a necessity. We are committed to providing the latest in technological advancements for our patients. Here are just some of the technologies we use.

Vero Beach Art of Dentistry - Cosmetic dentist, General dentist in Vero Beach, FL

The use of magnification in dentistry provides increased image size, which allows Dr. Hagood to visualize things not otherwise perceptible to the naked eye. Magnification not only improves the quality of care provided to patients, but also expands the range of treatments that can be offered. The benefits of magnification include:

Dr. Johnson Hagood prefers the microscopic technology from Designs for Vision. The precision optical research and manufacturing done by Designs for Vision is among the most sophisticated in the world.

Dr. Hagood utilizes the latest digital dental technology from Schick. Thanks to this new dental technology, we can take x-rays with up to 90% less radiation than from older conventional equipment and generate images that are superior to conventional x-ray film. Patients enjoy the efficiency, comfort, and safety. Patients can view their digital radiographs on the computer monitor as we discuss findings. From the clinical standpoint, retrievability and portability are greatly enhanced. Your digital x-rays can be emailed to the office of any clinician who is collaborating with Dr. Hagood, for example, an orthodontist, periodontist, or oral surgeon. Plus, digital x-rays are environmentally safe; they require no developing solutions, fixers, cleansers, or x-ray mounts.

One of our most important dental tools has become the digital camera. Dr. Hagood prefers the Nikon D200 which boasts a 10.2 megapixel DX Format CCD image sensor and yields extraordinarily high-resolution images. Paired with a high magnification macro lens, the images are used for diagnosis, patient communication, treatment planning, treatment confirmation, shade matching, imaging, and lecture purposes. We have hundreds of before and after images to view of nearly every type of dental procedure. All images on this website were taken with our Nikon digital camera.

Another highly technical digital dental tool used by Dr. Hagood and the hygiene department is the intra-oral digital video camera from Schick. The tiny device is a video camera that moves around inside the mouth and generates a tooth by tooth video exam. The images can be stored and later enlarged and printed.

Vero Beach Art of Dentistry - Cosmetic dentist, General dentist in Vero Beach, FL

As it is difficult to see inside your mouth, the intra-oral camera provides a previously unseen magnified view. The pen-sized camera features a disposable cover to prevent contamination and is completely safe and painless to use. As the camera moves around the mouth, it sends video images to a computer which is then displayed on a monitor. The images can then be viewed by both the doctor and patient. Using the intra-oral camera allows the patient to better understand their needs by seeing what the dentist sees, while having it explained.

Since the intra-oral dental camera generates images that are stored enlarged and analyzed, often dental problems can be caught in their early stages. Once treatment options are discussed and agreed upon, our intra-oral camera can be used to effectively track treatment progress. The digital images allow us to:

One of our newest and most exciting technologies is the T-Scan Computerized occlusal analysis system. With T-Scan technology, Dr. Hagood accurately documents how your teeth come together, the points of contact, which points make contact first, and the forces that occur.

Vero Beach Art of Dentistry - Cosmetic dentist, General dentist in Vero Beach, FL

For years, dental occlusion has been largely a matter of guesswork for dentists. Articulation marking paper, waxes, and pressure indicator paste were all the dentist had to assess and balance the forces of occlusion. Most of these methods are not sensitive enough to detect simultaneous contact, and none measure both biting time and force. The T-Scan occlusal analyzer has met this challenge, and we are now able to effectively reduce the risk of:

The heart of T-Scan technology is a disposable, extremely thin, flexible sensor. By biting and chewing against the sensor, a three-dimensional view of your bite is displayed on our computer screen. We can then easily adjust the bite and check our work with the sensor. The process is repeated until the biting forces are equalized.

Human joints have surfaces which rub together in function. Smooth, well lubricated surfaces in a proper biomechanical relationship produce little friction and little vibration. But surface changes, such as those caused by degeneration, tears, or displacements of the disk, generally produce friction and vibration. Different disorders can produce different vibration patterns or signatures. Analysis of a Joint Vibration Recording (JVR) identifies these patterns and helps Dr. Hagood distinguish among various TMJ disorders. A JVA recording is painless and takes only a few moments. The JVR diagnostic tool provides Dr. Hagood a fast, non-invasive, and repeatable measurement of TMJ function to aid in your diagnosis of TMJ function.

Listening to your jaw joints is an important step in the TMJ-Occlusal exam process. A doppler is basically a stethoscope with a microphone that incorporates the Doppler wave effect. (This technology is also used to listen a babys heartbeat in the womb.) Dr. Hagood will place the stethoscope at each joint and listen to the sounds of your jaw joint movements. From the sounds, he can assess the amount of friction and quality of lubrication within each joint.

Dr. Hagood uses the Picasso soft tissue dental laser to perform a variety of soft tissue procedures, such as opening and shaping gum tissue. Laser technology minimizes tissue damage. It also minimizes bleeding and the risk of infection because the high-energy light beam aids in blood coagulation and sterilizes the surgical area. Most patients do not experience post-operative pain because nerve endings are sealed and swelling is lighter than if a scalpel is used.

Dr. Hagood uses an MLS cold laser (a low-level energy laser) as a therapeutic tool to treat TMJ and facial muscle pain. The lasers light energy penetrates deep into inflamed muscles and the temporomandibular joints to reduce inflammation and associated pain. As the light wand is passed over the skin, you will feel a comfortable warming sensation.

Dr. Hagood uses lightweight and relatively quiet NSK electric handpieces for removing and polishing tooth enamel and shaping dental restorations. The smaller, slimmer design of these dental drills makes them more ergonomic than traditional handpieces and better supports the precision and efficiency of Dr. Hagoods work. The lighter touch of this type of drill works exceedingly well with todays dental ceramics, lending to their durability and exquisite appearance, even on the microscopic level.

I am truly fortunate to have been referred to Dr. Hagood by my dentist relative for crown and implant work that was botched by a Palm Beach "specialist". Thank you "Art of Dentistry" team for your expertise. I now enjoy eating like never before!

I'm a born and raised northerner who met Dr. Hagood and his staff during a winter vacation 15 years ago. I was so impressed with the care I received I began seeing him on subsequent trips. In 2019 I received radiation and chemotherapy for tongue cancer and my teeth were virtually destroyed. I came to Art of Dentistry and underwent 6 months of work on a mouth that now can smile without hiding behind a hand. Dr. Hagood and all of the staff were always professional, kind, and supportive throughout even the long and tedious appointments. My teeth look great and I can now eat whatever I want. Thank You

I can't describe my entire experience/procedure with Dr. Hagood and his staff. Suffice it to say that my expectations at first consult were far different than where we ended (happily). Dr. Hagood listened carefully and considered all my concerns. He made suggestions and offered me greater options than I had thought available. Throughout the several phases of treatment, I appreciated the gentleness of the process. He took extra care at all times, to make me as comfortable as possible. Each member of his staff is enthusiastic, knowledgeable, professional and extremely personable. Dr Hagood made certain I was satisfied with the results. I am greatly satisfied, and people frequently compliment my "great smile." I recommend Dr. Hagood- definitely. UPDATE: JANUARY 2022 The reason I waited so long to post this update, is that I'd forgotten I'd written this review. It popped up today when I was doing something else in google, so I decided to update. Part of my treatment was the application of composite veneers to 6 of my front uppers. Within the first year, they began to chip and peel at the gum line area. I now have just the remnants on # 10 and 11, and the upper edge of #9 is beginning to lift. The ones that remain intact have visible staining at the gum line, even with 6 month cleanings. In fairness to VBAD and Dr. Hagood, I called his office when the issue began, and they offered to see me about it. Unfortunately, I had moved 3000 miles away. I feel certain that the issue would have been rectified, so my complaint here is not a negative toward the business, just toward COMPOSITE VENEERS. My experience is that they are Initially beautiful, but short lived. The porcelain veneers are probably loads better.

I debated for many years whether to have my old bridge repaired. It had been made when I was 19 years old. It was badly in need of replacement. Dr. Hagood went over the procedure and let me think about it. It was one of the best things I have done. The process was along time n the dentist chair but with superior results. Can't believe I waited so long.

Both my wife and I have gone thru Invisalign treatment with excellent results. And my wife had additional crown/veneers work and couldn't be happier. Dr. Hagood is excellent as are all members of his staff. We drive from Fort Lauderdale (125 miles each way) for services from this office. That says it all.

I straightened my teeth with Invisalign. Dr.Hagood was very meticulous from the beginning. His goal was the same as mine;a nice smile. I had buck teeth, but not any more! It was easy; just wear the aligners they give you. I had tried Smile Direct and it was a waste of my time and money. Even though invisaline is more expensive, it is definitely worth it. The results were phenomenal! Dr.Hagood really knows what he is doing. He made sure my teeth were the best they could be. He did a refinement at the end of the first round of aligners. He gave me 8 more aligners to fix a space between my top and bottom teeth. It didn't cost extra. I was happy with the results. I would highly recommend this office and Dr.Hagood. You will not be disappointed!

Dr. Hagood and his professional staff at Vero Beach Art of Dentistry have changed my life! I have had problems with headaches, jaw pain and poor sleep stemming from excessive clenching and teeth grinding (& chipping) for over a decade. Dr. Hagood took his time with consultations and a thoughtful approach to treating me to help alleviate the pain. With the aid of a new sleep splint and some other treatments such as Botox in my jaw, I began to feel relief in less than 2 weeks. I'm so excited to continue my treatment and see just how much improvement we can continue to make. After years of doctors including specialists such as ENT's it is a pleasure to work with such a knowledgeable doctors who takes the time to truly understand the issues and treats the root cause not just the symptoms.

As I have moved around the state of Florida, I have tried other dentists but always return to Dr. Johnson Hagood. He genuinely cares about his patients and is thorough in his evaluation of my mouth and explanation of the things he and I observe are changing. I have needed extensive occlusal adjustment for my bite and extensive restorations because I wore down my teeth prematurely and had real dental crises in my 40's. Everything has been done so comfortably and competently that driving long distance to see Dr. Hagood and this care team has been definitely worthwhile. Now at age 69, my teeth have never been more beautiful, my smile more aligned, and my bite more comfortable. His years of experience and advanced training have led to what I would call "mastery" for solving dental problems and providing comprehensive treatment to head off future dental problems. Sabrina, who is his hygienist, and ALL the dental assistants there are very caring, friendly, and KNOWLEDGABLE. Thank you, Vero Beach Art of Dentistry!

I don't know what I would do without them and their knowledge. They diagnosed my degenerative disc disease in my jaw and are working so hard to get my night guard just right. Not to mention their beautiful flowers blooming outside the office makes for a very welcoming experience. So happy my general dentist referred me to them.
