With advancements in modern dentistry, millions of Americans no longer have to suffer with missing teeth or loss of function in their mouth. Dental implants are a highly effective alternative to traditional restorations such as dental bridges to replace missing teeth.

A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown. Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are placed in the bone and designed to support a restoration, such as a crown, while fully functioning during the forces of biting a chewing. Venice Periodontics and Implant Dentistry utilizes the highest quality implant materials made of durable and long lasting titanium that predictably fuses with the jawbone tissue after a period of time. Dental implants create a strong support system for restorations such as partial bridges and crowns.

Did you know that missing teeth can have an impact on your oral health as well as your overall health? When you are missing teeth, the remaining teeth have to bear the extra forces of chewing and biting, which can increase the likelihood of prematurely wearing the enamel or even damaging the teeth with chips and cracks. If you are missing teeth, you likely make certain food choices that are easier to chew, but possibly lack the nutritive value of other foods. Missing teeth causes the alveolar bone (the part of the jawbone that anchors the teeth and creates the tooth sockets) to resorb. Furthermore, missing teeth can cause jaw pain and headaches, which can become chronic and limit normal daily activities.

Successful dental implants begin with a complete examination of your mouth, jaw, teeth and overall health including x-rays and CBCT scans to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. The CBCT scan provides important information about any areas of bone loss, shape of sinuses and location of nerves that helps guide your periodontal expert in determining if implants are right for you.

Most people no matter what age are good candidates for dental implants. Limiting factors for the success of dental implants include chronic illnesses like diabetes, smoking or if the patient has received radiation previously to the area. If bone loss is identified, there are options to rebuild the bone tissue through a bone grafting procedure. Advancements in bone grafting procedures and materials have made it possible for patients who have not been ideal candidates previously to have the opportunity for successful implant treatment.

When considering Dental Implants, you need to be sure you see the best provider for your care. Dentists, periodontists, prosthodontists and oral surgeons may all be able to place your implants, but they do not have the same experience and skills.

The best option is to have a specialist board certified in periodontology and implant dentistry. A periodontist like Dr. Turner is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease and oral inflammation. Moreover, periodontists are specially trained in the placement, maintenance and repair of dental implants.

Dr. Lisa Turner is highly experienced in implant surgery and employs the latest techniques available to ensure the proper placement for the most predictable and successful outcomes. Dental implants are the standard of care for tooth replacement as well as for revising and maintaining older restorations.

Dental implants are the only dental restoration that stimulates the growth of new bone. Implants also look and act like your natural teeth which means you can floss between them and maintain good oral hygiene habits.

While Venice Periodontics and Implant Dentistry specializes in periodontal treatments for gum disease, we also specialize in the placement of high quality dental implants. Dr. Lisa Turner is board certified in Periodontology and Dental Implant Surgery through the American Board of Periodontology.

At Venice Periodontics & Implant Dentistry, we use the highest standards of care when placing dental implants and we have a proven success rate that showcases our experience and expertise. The team at Venice Periodontics and Implant Dentistry is dedicated to providing our patients with top-notch care as well as offering premium brands of dental implants. Stock or cheaper implants have a higher failure rate and the components are more difficult to find when restoring implants. The dental implants that we use are amongst the top brands available in the industry and are designed to be long-lasting and durable.

The placement of dental implants and restorations will take several months to complete as the healing process plays a vital role in the success of implant therapy. The procedure is also a multistep process depending on how many implants are required.

Once your examination is complete and you are ready to get your implant placed, Dr. Turner will make a small incision in the gum over the missing tooth to expose the bone. A small titanium post is surgically placed in the bone to replace the root of the missing tooth. Depending on your unique dental requirements, Dr. Turner can place bone grafting material around the implant to help establish a strong foundation for the restoration, if necessary. There are many options for bone grafting materials that encourage and promote the bodys natural ability to heal and form new bone growth. Your periodontal expert will guide you when determining which grafting material will work best for your needs. Once the titanium tooth root is placed, your body begins the process of osseointegration, which is the fusing of the jaw bone to the dental implant.

The incision is closed and your implant is left to heal and fuse to the bone for several months. At this time, a temporary denture or bridge may be used to place over the missing tooth while the bone heals.

Once your bone has fully healed, the next step is to place the abutment on the dental implant. The gum tissue will be opened to expose the dental implant. The abutment will be placed onto the implant and the gum tissue will be closed around the abutment, but not over it. The abutment is a special attachment piece designed to hold the crown restoration in place. After this step, the gums will heal for approximately 2 weeks.

The last step in the process will be the placement of the restoration. Before the restoration is made, an impression is taken of the surrounding teeth and sent to a lab where a beautiful new crown restoration is custom-made to match your surrounding teeth. Once the restoration is fabricated, it can be placed onto the abutment and you will have a natural-looking, long-lasting permanent solution to missing teeth. It will look, feel and function like your natural tooth and the implant will help preserve your bone structure, as well as restore your oral health and appearance.
