Once the titanium tooth root is placed, your body begins the process of osseointegration, which is the fusing of the jaw bone to the dental implant.
The incision is closed and your implant is left to heal and fuse to the bone for several months. At this time, a temporary denture or bridge may be used to place over the missing tooth while the bone heals.
Once your bone has fully healed, the next step is to place the abutment on the dental implant. The gum tissue will be opened to expose the dental implant. The abutment will be placed onto the implant and the gum tissue will be closed around the abutment, but not over it. The abutment is a special attachment piece designed to hold the crown restoration in place. After this step, the gums will heal for approximately 2 weeks.
The last step in the process will be the placement of the restoration. Before the restoration is made, an impression is taken of the surrounding teeth and sent to a lab where a beautiful new crown restoration is custom-made to match your surrounding teeth. Once the restoration is fabricated, it can be placed onto the abutment and you will have a natural-looking, long-lasting permanent solution to missing teeth.
