Dental emergencies are quite frightening and often painful. Prompt treatment is almost always required to alleviate pain and to ensure the teeth have the best possible chance of survival. Sometimes, teeth become fractured by trauma, grinding, or biting on hard objects. In other cases, fillings, crowns, and other restorative devices can be damaged or fall out of the mouth completely. If there is severe pain, it is essential to contact our office immediately. The pain caused by dental emergencies almost always gets worse without treatment, and dental issues can seriously jeopardize physical health. Types of dental emergency and how to deal with them Avulsed tooth (tooth knocked out) If a tooth has been knocked clean out of the mouth, it...

Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay or infection. In order to save the tooth, the pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth), nerves, bacteria, and any decay are removed and the resulting space is filled with special, medicated, dental materials, which restore the tooth to its full function. Having a root canal done on a tooth is the treatment of choice to save a tooth that otherwise would die and have to be removed. Many patients believe that removing a tooth that has problems is the solution, but what is not realized is that extracting (pulling) a tooth will ultimately be more costly and cause significant problems for adjacent teeth. Root canal treatment is highly successful and usually...

Tooth extractions, or the removal of one or more teeth, are usually used as a last resort in dentistry, as keeping the natural tooth in the mouth is ideal. There are many reasons why single or multiple extractions may be performed, including pervasive tooth decay, the impaction of wisdom teeth, or the need to create space for orthodontic devices. The most significant short-term benefit associated with tooth extraction is the elimination of pain. If a tooth is severely decayed or an infection is present, removing the affected tooth almost immediately alleviates discomfort. However, it should be noted that further procedures are necessary to replace the extracted tooth. Leaving a gap is not a viable option as the other teeth tend to twist...

A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations. Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth colored crown) are the most popular, because they resemble your natural teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile. Reasons for crowns: Broken or fractured teeth. Cosmetic enhancement. Decayed teeth. Fractured fillings. Large...

If a tooth has been knocked clean out of the mouth, it is essential to see a dentist immediately. When a tooth exits the mouth, tissues, nerves, and blood vessels become damaged. If the tooth can be placed back into its socket within an hour, there is a chance the tissues will grow to support the tooth once again.

Usually, a crown or filling comes loose while eating. Once it is out of the mouth, the affected tooth may be incredibly sensitive to temperature changes and pressure. Crowns generally become loose because the tooth beneath is decaying. The decay causes shape changes in the teeth meaning that the crown no longer fits.

The nature of the break or fracture will limit what we are able to do. If a fracture or crack extends into the root, root canal therapy is often the most effective way to retain the tooth. In the case of a complete break, your dentist will usually affix the fragment back onto the tooth as a temporary measure.

When a tooth has been dislodged or loosened from its socket by trauma or decay, it might be possible to save it.If the tooth remains in the mouth still attached to the blood vessels and nerves, there is a good chance root canal therapy will not be necessary.

THE ONLY DR WHO TOOK MY EMERGENCY SITUATION SERIOUSLY! I called 6 other endodontists in my network who all told me sorry the first available NEW PATIENT appointment is weeks and months out. HELLO this is an emergency, it's infected and extremely painful. It happened on a Thursday, Friday was in the dentist office, he diagnosed the problem and i could not find anyone who would or could take me immediately until i found Dr Zimmerman office. His receptionist was incredibly understanding, kind and spoke with the Dr to get me in. I was at his office 45 minutes later and began the procedure. He is very professional, kind, compassionate and took time to remove a very old root canal that had gone bad and then do a new one. Very time consuming and delicate. He did it perfectly. I have never had a better experience with Dr and office staff! I highly recommend Dr Zimmerman and his office!

PLEASE READ..I was overcharged, and waiting for my refund,... they have lied to me saying that he was not in my network insurance. Be careful, I see another person that had a similar review last year. It is sad that this doctor sabotage his own practice because he is good at what he do, but the way they charge people and handle payments is fraud. I received the explanation of benefits from my insurance and in fact he was paid in network and overcharged me $363.13 My insurance have been trying to get a hold of this office and me but now you can only leave a message, which they have ignored. They have 30 days to process my refund, I am sad to say that if we don't receive it in this period of time we will have to take legal action.

I am not one to write a lot of reviews... With that being said, I'm taking the time today to thank Dr. Zimmerman and his staff for taking such great care of me. I had been suffering with a terrible toothache for 2 weeks waiting in my regular dentist to get me in. I couldn't stand it anymore and called Dr Zimmerman's office on a Tuesday and was promptly seen the very next day for a root canal. Procedure was gentle end fast. I didn't even need a Tylenol the next day. It was immediate relief and for that I am thankful.

I've been putting this root canal off for a long time because I didn't know what to expect but today I went and had it done. Staff was super nice and Dr.Zimmerman knows exactly what he is doing ,great experience! It only took about 30min start to finish.

Dr. Joseph Zimmerman, and his staff, is one of Knoxville's best kept secrets! Everyone there is friendly and helpful. All the payment information was upfront and straightforward. No confusion at all. My experience there was awesome. I had a root canal and it was a breeze. The worst part of the entire process was ensuring I needed one. That was the worst part. After that it is smooth sailing all the way. I would 100% recommend this business to anyone needing endodontic work. I will also be asking my dentist to add his name to their list of suggestions when someone is looking for an Endodontist.

I had my first and only appt. with Dr. Zimmerman's office last week.. Dr. Zimmerman's work is great. However Vicky at the front desk is a miserable person similar to the worst of bill collectors. My cost after insurance was $1200+. She demanded payment IN FULL immediately after the procedure siting some arbitrary "office policy". I was confused as typically any medical office bills you for work done and expects payment/s in a reasonable amount of time. They also try to charge a ridiculous fee of 4% to use a debit or credit card. I am not going to pay $60+ just to run a payment.. However I am not one to skip out on a debt so I offered to pay with a check once i got home. ( who carries a checkbook?) She said NO i needed to pay now. Only then did the 4% fee become unnecessary. She had a bad attitude from the moment I met her and gets irritated if you ask for an explanation of cost. She is probably great at bullying patients into paying ( as is her job) but she is the sole reason for me never wanting to return to Dr. Zimmerman for any work I may need in the future.

My daughter went to Dr. Zimmerman. He went out of his way to fit her into the schedule because she was hurting so badly. The procedure went very well. He took his time with her and did a fantastic job. She had no pain at all after the procedure. He took excellent care of her and we will always appreciate his care. His office staff were very kind as well. If my family needs endodontic care again, we will definitely see Dr. Zimmerman again.

Like many endodontic patients, I came to Dr. Zimmerman with tooth pain but no clear diagnosis. Dr. Joe did not speculate but began testing to get a handle on my condition. Once the diagnosis was made, he presented my options without any bias or pressure. I was impressed by his understanding, skill, and easy-going manner. He went the extra mile to minimize my discomfort as he does for all of his patients. He communicated well in preparing me for each step of my treatment. I am thoroughly pleased the result. I highly recommend Dr. Zimmerman. How refreshing it is to find a highly trained professional who genuinely serves his patients with their best interest in mind. My bill was very reasonable. I had a very difficult tooth that other Endodontists would have given up on. Dr. Zimmerman and his assistant were kind and comforting. His patience and persistence paid off. I spent almost four hrs in that chair. This means he spent almost four hrs trying to save my tooth. I will recommend him to anyone in need of the service he provides.

Best root canal experience I have had! Dr Zimmerman worked me in same day for an emergency. I did not even need Advil when the numbness wore off. His technique was gentle and thorough. Highly recommend!
