Developed by a committee from the AHA, and adopted by the ADA, in April 2007 it has been concluded that antibiotic treatments prior to most dental procedures are unnecessary and ineffectual based on the following findings:
Infective endocarditis prophylaxis for dental procedures should be recommended only for patients with underlying cardiac conditions associated with the highest risk of adverse outcome from infective endocarditis.
People with the following conditions should still receive preventive antibiotics prior to Dental Procedures that involve manipulation of gingival tissue, or the periapical region of teeth, or perforation of the oral mucosa. The new recommendations apply to many dental procedures, including teeth cleaning and extractions.
In patients with prosthetic joint implants, a January 2015 ADA clinical practice guideline, based on a 2014 systematic review states, In general, for patients with prosthetic joint implants, prophylactic antibiotics are not recommended prior to dental procedures to prevent prosthetic joint infection.
Dr. Shelly Lee grew up in the southeastern region of the United States the daughter of Taiwanese immigrants. She graduated with honors from Wake Forest University and then worked as a research assistant in infectious disease at Wake Forests Bowman Gray School of Medicine. In 1999, Dr. Lee graduated from Northwestern University Dental School. While in dental school, she completed a 2-month externship in Colorado where she provided general dentistry needs to migrant farm workers and their children. Dr. Lee developed a real love and respect for nature and the outdoors during this externship. After dental school, she completed postgraduate training in endodontics at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, where she earned a masters degree in endodontics. Her thesis included the use of revolutionary anesthetic instruments like the Wand and its associated techniques.
Dr. Lee has been in private practice in endodontics since 2001 when she and her husband moved to Indianapolis where her husband completed a radiology residency at Indiana University. During these years in private practice, Dr. Lee also served as Clinical Assistant Professor at Indiana University School of Dentistry teaching in the endodontic clinic. She developed a passion for teaching and continues to teach endodontics today at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. Dr. Lee has published research and clinical articles in The Journal of Immunology, Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, Anesthesia Progress, and Oral Surgery-Oral Medicine-Oral Pathology-Oral Radiology and Endodontology.
Outside of dentistry, Dr. Lee is an enthusiastic cook and backyard bird feeder. She is also an avid Crossfitter, and in her spare time, enjoys competing in local Crossfit competitions. Dr. Lee lives in Dublin with her husband, 3 daughters, and 5 cats.
Dr. Oser was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He received his bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, graduating magna cum laude. He attended Columbia University College of Dental Medicine graduating in the top tier in his class. He and his wife moved to New England where Dr. Oser completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Providence, RI. Following residency, he worked in private practice as a general dentist in Boston, MA. During his time in private practice, he realized his true passion for Endodontics and subsequently completed his Endodontics specialty residency at Tufts University.Dr. Oser has a passion for teaching and has lectured on endodontics at Tufts University as well as at the Yankee Dental Congress and is currently a professor of endodontics at University of Illinois-Chicago. He is a published author in the Journal of Endodontics. He is a member of the Ohio as well as the Chicago Dental Society, American Dental Association, and American Association of Endodontics. He is a proud recipient of the award for Clinical Excellence in Endodontics from the New York State Association of Endodontists, Outstanding Student in Implant Dentistry from the Academy of Osseointegration, and the APEX award for Esthetic Dentistry from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He is also the recipient of the Civic Honors Award and is a member of the Honos Civicus Society for his volunteer work both in local communities as well as abroad.
Away from the office, Dr. Oser is an avid world traveler, cyclist, skier, and sports fan. He volunteers his time worldwide through global health externships, providing dental care for children of need around the world. He has been an integral part in building a fixed dental clinic in La Romana, Dominican Republic and travels yearly to provide dental care.
