Regionally, nationally, and globally, UPMC Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh is a leader in the treatment of childhood conditions and diseases, a pioneer in the development of new and improved therapies, and a top educator of the next generation of pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists. With generous community support, UPMC Childrens Hospital has fulfilled this mission since its founding in 1890. UPMC Childrens is named consistently to several elite lists of pediatric hospitals, including ranking on the prestigious U.S. News & World Report annual Honor Roll of Best Childrens Hospitals for 2021-2022.

UPMC Childrens has been in its new 10-acre home in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood since May 2009. Designed with input from physicians, nurses and families to ensure that patients receive care in a comfortable setting, the hospital is a benchmark for quality care built on five principles including:

Your support, presence and involvement are very important to your childs sense of comfort and security while in the hospital. You are encouraged to spend as much time as possible with your child. Please inform your childs nurse when you will be leaving the hospital and when you plan to return.

  • Encourage your childto participate in activities and special programs offered by the Child Life and Volunteer Services Department. It is easier for children to be in the hospital when they are involved in interesting activities. Activity Centers are rooms where hospitalized children of all ages can relax in child-friendly, medical-free environments. Supervised group and individualized play sessions are provided daily. Bedside activities are offered to children who are on bed rest or in isolation.
  • Stay in touchwith changes in your childs personality or behavior during or following hospitalization. Young children may become clingy or demanding. If your child recently has been toilet-trained or weaned from the bottle, he/she may temporarily regress. The Nursing and Child Life staff can help you cope with these issues.
  • Children at different ages react differently to hospitalization. Below are possible age-appropriate reactions your child may have, as well as suggestions for comforting your child during his/her hospital stay.

For a child under 3 years of age, having close and continual parental contact during hospitalization is the best means of support. Young children generally do not understand their illness or the hospital environment and most likely will be concerned about being away from the family. Being with your child in the hospital will make him/her feel more secure. However, in observation suites and in the intensive care environment, families will find there are periods of time when they cannot be with their child around the clock.

This age group also wants to be near the family and often views a hospital stay or procedure as punishment for something. Honest, simple, age-appropriate conversations can help your child feel more secure. Remember, young children learn best through play.

Older children usually are worried about painful procedures and changes to their body. Providing information is key at this age. Dont mislead your child by saying something wont hurt if it will. Instead, talk with your child about how to cope with possible pain and confusion.

Teens often are self-conscious and may have lots of questions about specific procedures. Encourage your teen to talk to doctors and nurses involved in his/her care and allow the teen to be part of decisions. This will help your teen feel some degree of control.

Support is offered for patients or family members who are hearing-impaired or non-English-speaking, including foreign language interpreters, sign language interpreters, listening devices, TDD/TTY devices and Deaf Talk (video-conferencing equipment providing sign language and foreign language interpreting).

The office staff, nurses and dentist were so incredible. They took great care of my 2 and 4 year old boys. Definitely recommend. You just have to call upmc scheduling to actually get an appointment.

The dental hygienist (Andrea) and Dr. Chapman were very encouraging, patient, and positive with my 3 year old.

We absolutely love this dental office! So much easier getting to and parking than at Children's hospital. Not sure why there are so many bad reviews.. we've never had an issue here at all, I've always either had someone answer or have received a call back within the hour of leaving a voice-mail. The front desk ladies have always been pleasant and the hygentist and dentist are amazing!! They are wonderful with the kiddos! I 100 % would recommend!

The staff and dentists are always friendly when when we go there. I take 3 children under the age of 8 to this office. We get in and out in a timely fashion so that's why I drive the extra time to go here verses the hospital. They do good, clean work also!

Called this office multiple times and every time it went to the voicemail asking to provide information so they can get back to me. I put the voicemail twice and I waited 2-3 weeks every time, and no-one called me back! I'm wondering if this office is even open!

At first I really liked this office. Didn't need to walk all through the hospital or pay to park. The lady at the front desk was fine. As soon as we go in the back, the hygienist instantly was like I'd appreciate if you didn't take pictures of me. Ok , first of all why would I want a picture of you ?! So, it was the first time my son sat in the big dentist chair-so I was taking a picture of him and she said it again! I said I'm taking a picture of MY SON. That was the first issue. Then the dentist came in. She was nice at first then said something about my kid being difficult the last time. Excuse me! He's only been to the dentist 3 times. He's 4 and we missed last year because of Covid. So if you said he cried last time that's different, but difficult! He was 1 or 2 years old! This time he was older and didn't shed one tear. He was so good. They kept saying how good he was, then why even say he was difficult in the past. Ask any parent, I'm sure they'd say their kid cried at 1 or 2. Then the third strike.. she's telling me what we'll need to do when he 6! She even gave me a list of doctors that do what he needs done!!! That's in 2 years. Too many attitudes. Don't go to this office.
