Sedation and anesthesia can be used for a number of dental procedures both at the office or in a hospital setting and are a scary subject for many parents and patients, due to the fear of the unknown. We hope to ease your worries by outlining possible dental sedation plans. The overall goal of sedation and anesthesia is to provide the utmost comfort and ease to the patient. The type used depends on the patients age as well as the kind of procedure being performed.

The most popular form of sedation is nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. When inhaled, it puts the patient into a relaxed, euphoric state. Laughing gas is not intended to put a patient to sleep. Other forms of sedation involve administering oral medications or IV solutions, before or during the procedure. Common side effects of laughing gas include, blurred vision, dizziness and that your dentists once seemingly lame jokes, suddenly sound hilarious!

There are two types of anesthesia, local and general. Local anesthesia is provided in the office and uses injections to block specific nerves and numb the patients mouth at the site of the procedure. Local can also be combined with sedation to provide extra comfort for the patient, as they remain conscious for this type of procedure.

General anesthesia is administered in the office or in a hospital setting by a trained professional, such as an oral maxillofacial surgeon or an anesthesiologist, for patients who are having extensive work done. This type of anesthesia involves putting the patient to sleep, through IV drugs and/or gaseous anesthetics, for the entirety of the procedure. Children should be taken care of by a pediatric anesthesiologist, as they have specialized training and qualifications to provide the best care for this type of patient. Typically, the patient will meet with the anesthesiologist beforehand and go over the sedation plan. Afterwards, medication will be prescribed for pain and nausea. All of the care is done in one session and the patient is then allowed to go home.

It is of the utmost importance that the patients stomach be empty, anytime he or she is having a procedure done that involves sedation or anesthesia. During dental procedures, airway reflexes are impaired which can result in vomiting and can cause serious injury to lungs, especially if there are food or beverage remnants in the stomach. Fasting instructions are given to patients and parents prior to the procedure and should be strictly adhered to.

Wishing there was a way to give a negative star. We brought our daughter here for her teeth. She had fallen and broke on at the top and it was basically completely dying. During our visit they decided it was best to schedule a surgery because she had other teeth that needed capped and the broken one removed. She's 4. First they scheduled us for a late day surgery. So a 4 year old. No food. No nothing. So that was tough. We were told to come in at 1. She didn't get taken back for surgery until after 5PM. So she was tired, starving and super thirsty! We were told it would take about an hour. We were gone 15 minutes when we got the call she was done. Just for us to get back and they realized they called the wrong parents but said she'd be out soon to wait. It was well over an hour before we were brought back. When we were brought back the discharge nurse (super nice) stated that we just had to sign the paper work for discharge and to follow the instructions the Dr told us after surgery. To our surprise HE LEFT THE HOSPITAL WITHOUT EVER talking to us. (Apparently he's done this before) We found he capped the tooth that was suppose to be pulled and pulled one that was never even spoken about. I called to complain multiple times and no one ever called me back. Went into the office and complained but they only ever apologized for him and nothing else was said or done Due to insurance issues and it being so close to the surgery we had to keep returning there for 6 months before another dentist would see us. We were there so many time after with reoccurring infection in one tooth. So they gave an antibiotic then scheduled to pull it. We took her into the office for it to be pulled and he said it looked amazing and didn't need to be pulled call back with issues. Well fast forward to a week ago we FINALLY got into a new dentist. Come to find out the tooth he was gonna pull but didn't is fully capped and you can't see under it to know if it's infected. Which because it should have been pulled it could be damaging her adult teeth. It needs to be pulled along with another 4. Including the infected one that was suppose to be pulled 5 months ago also could be damaging her adult teeth. A spacer was never put in where the pulled the molar. A separate molar that should have been pulled had a "kiddie root canal" we never knew was done and now needs to be pulled. Basically the dentist here did a hack job on our daughters month and now thanks to that dentist she needs to have ANOTHER surgery done with more work. Apparently lots of people have issues with this place and I am SO surprised they are still able to practice. It makes me sick.

POOR IMPRESSION WOULD BE AN UNDERSTATEMENT: My son had a virtual visit on Wednesday with the Dr, it was assessed that he has an abscess. The Dr said he would call the Rx right away. I text all the requested information, then confirmed it via phone with the staff. I called a half hour later and they had no Rx. Yesterday morning I called, still no Rx. The office told me it was being taken care of. On my lunch break yesterday I called yet again, nothing. My son was physically at the office for an x-ray of the tooth where we asked about the antibiotic again, and were told it was taken care of. I stopped after work to pick up, still no RX to be found for my son. The office was closed, and I called the emergency on call number for over an hour while I sat at Cys. I finally decided to call the number for Oshei that is provided, the message there says dental has not been seeing patients and is closed! I had to call the ER, and track down someone to help. At this point my son has a headache, his gums are angry and red, and cheek is puffy. I finally got a resident Dr to help us out, because I should not have had to go through so much trouble to get a child with a dental abscess a medication, after having a virtual visit, and after physically being in the office and being assured more than three times it was done right away. I am extremely upset and disappointed that this issue was not resolved, the risk of him having sepsis and waiting and waiting for a simple antibiotic to be sent or called to the pharmacy is BEYOND unacceptable. I don't know what kind of prescription policy you have at the office but it seems it needs some revision. Because we all know that an abscess tooth can cause SEVERE complications. I hope other families don't have to experience this, even being a medical professional myself and knowing what needs to be done I shouldn't have had to do an hour lag work, 4 confirmations from the office that it was done, only to call the hospital. They wanted me to bring him into the ER. There is no way in hell after the above, this child should have to visit and utilize an ER because someone didn't send a script. I just want the office manager to know about this matter, I am hoping this awareness will stop this from happening to another child, and that no kids make an unnecessary ER trip. The child's health and treating infection should be the first priority.

I have never been more mortified in my life at the care my 5 year old son received here. He needed to have a tooth extracted due to an infection. The doctor rushed the procedure in the sense that they put the numbing gel on, then immediately put a couple injections in, and as soon as the last injection was put in, the doctor immediately extracted the tooth. They never allotted any time for the numbing to set in. My five year old has never been a crier or screamer, and as soon as the procedure started he was screaming blood curdling screams in pain, so I realized at that time that he was feeling every bit of what was happening. I would never imagined a doctor could care so poorly for a child. I'm hoping it wasn't because patients were complaining they were running late so they rushed my son's appointment to try and make up time. Either way, it was the worst pain I never could have imagined hearing from a child, let alone my own. It is a disgrace that any p doctor could care so badly for a patient. I am beyond in shock, and will certainly not be going back there. I just hope no other child ever experiences what my son went through.

I feel terrible I brought my kids there today. I just now read the reviews and all the terrible comments describe everything we experienced. The hygienist was judgy and rude. ( I don't believe in extra Fluoride treatments or unnecessary X-rays) she treated me as if I was a neglectful parent! After finding a cavity on my son baby tooth, they insisted on pulling out instead of offering a filling or crown then proceeded with extracting the tooth right after the numbing shot without waiting for it to take effect. I could tell he was in so much pain. As a parent I expect a conversation with the doctor so we can decide together what's best for my kids. They only tried to guilt me into procedures for money. Never going back, sorry my son went through this traumatic experience.

Unfortunately there is no option for negative stars...One star is the lowest possible score. Today I took my 12 year old in for a cleaning and I believe I am still in a bit of shock because of how I was treated by the hygentist. The hygentist began the cleaning and I said "no fluoride please." Well you would have thought I said "please remove all her teeth!" The lecture I got as a 39 year old woman was completely inappropriate. I did not ask her thoughts and opinions and I certainly didn't ask for a flat out lecture in front of my daughter. I sat in silence and nodded because I was noticing her get increasingly rough with the cleaning as my daughter was clenching her hands. The hygentist would NOT put the issue down even though I was not responding unless a direct question was asked. I honestly can't believe this. If a parent chooses fluoride that's their choice and vise versa. To directly insult and belittle a parent in front of their child is disgusting. I felt the hygentist had a complete lack of compassion, respect and boundaries. I don't know what was driving her behavior .... cash kickbacks for flouride, childhood issues, marriage issues ..who knows and who cares. How dare she treat people the way she did. I wish I would have recorded this nonstop tirade. I explained to the front desk what happened and that WE WILL NOT BE BACK. Unfortunate for the dentist who was an absolute sweetheart. Please be aware of this post and others like it. Wow, just wow unprofessional and totally disturbing.

Absolutely devastating that you can't give 0 stars - The wait time is terrible, if you set an appointment you still have no idea what time you're going to be seen - They don't send out any reminders of appointments so I accidentally missed an appointment for a filling in July and when I called to reschedule. The next available date was in December (2 months after my next scheduled 6 month appointment) - They gave my wife unnecessary x-rays while she was pregnant - I have never had a cavity in my life and after my first trip to UPD East Aurora they informed me that I had multiple cavities and trouble spots. The hygienist made a point to tell me that I needed to stop drinking pop and having candy with tons of sugar. After I informed her that I RARELY drink pop or other sugar filled drinks and never eat candy, she really had nothing to say. - All of my suspicions were confirmed after my dentist appointment today (03/20/19) where the hygienist and dentist at another practice said that my teeth were in great shape, no trouble spots and just to keep doing what I am doing. - This is a textbook example of taking advantage of your patients and trying to steal money from them. This is also another reason that people fear/dislike/avoid going to the dentist. I was nervous to go back because I didn't know what to expect. After my cleaning from a sound and professional practice it has definitely eased my mind. Anyone that goes to UPD I highly recommend trying another Dentist office.
