At University Pediatric Dentistry, we are committed to providing you with the highest quality of service possible, both in and out of our office. We are a small, patient-focused practice, and we work closely together as a team to ensure that children and individuals with special needs feel comfortable and welcome in our office and that parents feel encouraged to speak openly with us as needed.

We pride ourselves on being team players, and our goal is to make our patients and their parents have a dental experience that is as smooth and easy as possible. We do this by maintaining four core values:

When you visit our office, you can expect to be welcomed with a friendly smile and treated with respect, and you can trust that your child will receive care that meets the highest standards of quality and professionalism in dentistry.

Dr. M. Danielle Funny, Dr. Sonya Maynor and our team are also committed to giving back to the community in which we live. We actively support local schools and participate in various service projects in the Charlotte, North Carolina, area.We are honored to have had the opportunity to participate in the following causes:

Dr. Funny began her career in pediatric dentistry by treating patients in both public health and private practice before coming to University Pediatric Dentistry in 2009. A native of Elmsford, New York, she has grown to love the pace and weather in Charlotte! Dr. Funny was interested in science and in health-related issues even as a child, hoping to pursue a career in health care and make a positive impact on her community.

Her first strides toward becoming a health care professional were at Howard University in Washington, DC. At Howard, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry before returning to New York to further her studies at New York University, where she earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree.

As a dental student and later as a pediatric resident, Dr. Funny was very active in local and international dental outreaches. Her outreach interests afforded her opportunities to travel to Jamaica and the Dominican Republic, where she provided much-needed dental care to adults and children in underserved areas. It was through these outreach ventures and her personal experiences that she focused her career path on pediatric dentistry. Dr. Funny has continued her commitment to the underserved both locally and abroad by supporting the Ada Jenkins Dental Clinic, North Carolina Missions of Mercy clinics and many other dental outreach initiatives.

Dr. Funny currently holds memberships in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, North Carolina Association of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association, National Dental Association and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Locally, she actively participates in the Old North State Dental Society and Sharon L. Holley Study Club. Dr. Funny is a Board Certified pediatric dentist and has earned the distinction of becoming a fellow of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. When she is not treating patients, she enjoys reading, traveling, volunteering, and spending time with her husband, children, family and friends.

Dr. Maynor received a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from the University of Louisville, where she held office as class vice president, the admissions committee officer and a representative for Colgate Kids programs.

She went on to obtain a special needs certificate as senior fellow at Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw, New York, where she later served as junior attending. Dr. Maynor treated individuals with physical, developmental, behavioral and intellectual disabilities.

She completed an advanced education program in pediatric dentistry at New York University, where she held the position of chief resident. Dr. Maynor has taught at the dental graduate and undergraduate levels, served as a task force member for the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, has been involved with the Public Policy Advocacy Conference on Capitol Hill and was once a keynote speaker to the Student National Dental Association graduating class at the University of Tennessee at Memphis. She has worked professionally in private practice and public health, and she is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the North Carolina Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry and the Special Care Dentistry Association.

Her passion is to provide excellent and comprehensive oral care to children by using a multi-specialty care model because she believes every child should have the opportunity to become a healthy, happy and productive adult.

I love the care that university pediatric dentistry shows my daughter at every visit. They pay special attention to the words they use when telling her what they will be doing next during her cleaning. My daughter went into the cleaning nervous and scared and quickly relaxed and even asks the hygienist for more when she was scraping her teeth. Dr. Funny is equally great with my daughter extremely gentle. I love this dentist office but more importantly my 2 year old loves it and talked about her visit all the way home.

My son has been going to the dentist since he has 2 teeth, so needless to say I was q little nervous transitioning into a new practice. I have been completely put at ease. The office is very clean, masks have to be worn and hands washes by everyone entering into the space. For his first visit they took a photo that was then magnetized. Megan, Dr.Funnys Assistant was AMAZING. Her personality, reassurance with my son regarding his fear of certain tools and x-ray , how well he was doing was very noirturing. Dr Funny was very knowledgeable, respectful to the name my son wanted to be called. She does well at adjusting the energy of the child by slowing her pace of communication and work . This practice is amazing!

This was my son's second time visiting this office. The appointment started off awkward when the denial hygienist asked me if I had insurance. I had just provide my updated insurance information during the check in. She then proceed to whisper to one of the employees who works in the receptionist area. They proceeded to speak softly to each other. Finally, I was informed that their office is not considered "in network" and I would have to pay before the service was rendered. I offered to pay at that moment but they stated I could pay after the appointment. The denial hygienist then proceeded to ask what appeared to be routine questions about my son's oral care at home. She then followed up with asking if my son have went to speech therapy. I advised her that he will be attending his first session next week. I felt that question was odd and asked her why she asked about him attending speech therapy. She began to fumble her words. I then asked what does his speech have to do with his teeth? She mentioned something about his tongue and it might have to be clipped. The dentist never mentioned tongue clipping. I feel like this was a huge overstep on her part. The dentist was great and gentle.

Best pediatric dentist office ever! Seriously, everyone here delivers the best customer service. It is a consistently positive, pleasant, and professional experience from start to finish. The dental technicians are extremely patient and answer all fo my kiddos questions. My 13yo son, who is autistic, tends to have severe anxiety with medical appointments. And he does not dread coming for appointments. They have also gone out of their way to make accommodations for him since he can't have artificial colors in his toothpaste. Dr. Maynor and Dr. Funny definitely lead by example. They always come by and say hello whether we are meeting with them or not. And they take the time to see how we are doing outside of just teeth related things. They also take COVID protocols very seriously. They have staggered entry for appointments. Masks are required. And everyone has to wash their hands upon entry. I wholeheartedly recommend this office for your pediatric dental needs!
