Upon graduating from Stevens Academy in Hoboken, New Jersey and earning a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics at Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Ronald P. Petrosky went on to graduate from Temple University School of Dentistry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a doctor of dental surgery degree.

Dr. Gail P. Petrosky graduated from Hoboken High School, Hoboken, New Jersey, Monmouth University, Monmouth, New Jersey, and went on to graduate with a Doctor of Dental Medicine and a specialty degree in prosthodontics from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark, New Jersey.

Both Drs. Ronald and Gail Petrosky have since maintained a dedication and passion for excellence in the profession of dentistry having also completed numerous advanced continuing education programs such as certificates in implantology from the Misch International Institute in Detroit, Michigan, Harvard University School of Dental Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts, and the Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York.

This is in recognition of his outstanding achievements, having completed approximately 3,000 hours of advanced continuing education, many years of clinical experience, along with passing oral and written examinations.

As an example of one such distinction, Dr. Ronald Petrosky has received one of the most rigorous and prestigious designations in the profession of dentistry after completing the most comprehensive continuing education program in general dentistry, namely the title of Master of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD) in an awards convocation ceremony in San Antonio, Texas, 1991. The 'MAGD ' designation represents: ' A very small and select number of the roughly 150,000 of dentists in the United States in the top 1% of his peers nationwide. ' Completing the 'highest criteria for professional excellence ' of at least 1,000 hours of continuing education in 16 disciplines of dentistry including 400 hours dedicated to hands-on skills and techniques. ' A life long pursuit of continuing education to provide the highest quality of care to patients.

In 2005, Dr. Ronald Petrosky was selected as one of America's Top Dentists by The Consumers' Research Council of America, Washington, D.C., AS Who's Who In Dentistry, and in the National Registry of Who's Who.

Your dentist is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD), an organization of general dentists who are dedicated to professional development and continuing education. All AGD members must remain current with advances in the profession to provide quality patient treatment. A general dentist who is a 'Fellow' in the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) has been recognized by other general dentists as a leader and an example to other dentists of the importance of quality continuing dental education to patient care. A general dentist who has earned the designation 'Master' of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD)a big step up from Fellowshiphas completed a structured and rigorous set of requirements involving all the dental disciplines. Both Fellows and Masters have accepted the charge to keep abreast of advances in dentistry for the benefit of patients and the betterment of dentistry. They serve as mentors and leaders to other dentists pursuing continuing dental education. They set examples in their communities with their hard work, concern and involvement.

To earn a Fellowship Award, your dentist must earn a minimum of 500 approved continuing dental education credits and pass a comprehensive 400-question examination. Your dentist must also be an Academy of General Dentistry member for five continuous years. While attaining Fellowship is a challenge, it allows dentists to remain current with what is new in dentistry, and to incorporate the latest techniques into their practices.

To attain Mastership, members must first be Fellows in the Academy of General Dentistry. Then they must earn an additional 600 approved continuing education credits, meeting minimum requirements in certain dental disciplines, of which 400 hours are hands on courses. Thus, a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry has taken a total of 1,100 hours of continuing education. A Master has studied 16 disciplines in dentistry, such as periodontics, orthodontics and implants.

Fellows and Masters of the Academy of General Dentistry follow a lifelong pursuit of continuing education to provide the highest quality of dental care to patients. The award symbolizes the professional responsibility of general dentists to remain current in their profession and reminds each member of the dental profession to continue to learn new techniques for their dental practice. These are awards, however and should not be confused with post-graduate degrees or certification. Every dentist who applies for the Fellowship or Mastership award has their application reviewed by the AGD Council on Dental Education to assure that the high standards of the Academy of General Dentistry are met.

To date, more than 10,000 members of the Academy of General Dentistry have become Fellows and more than 1,000 have gone on to receive Mastership. The Academy is proud of all of its members who must take at least 75 hours of continuing dental education every three years, and especially proud of its members who have made the commitment to pursue these awards. When your dentist has achieved the Fellowship Award or Mastership Award, you can be assured that they are dedicated to providing the finest care in general dentistry.

Achieving the goal of Master of the AGD is a significant milestone in a member's career and clearly establishes a dentist as a shining example to other members of the profession. With this honor comes responsibility.

Masters of the AGD have participated in some of the best, most comprehensive continuing education available. They must use their experience and position to teach and give others the benefit of what they have learned. Be involved and be mentors. Use your knowledge to improve existing continuing education programs and help develop quality programs where none exist. Be a recognizable participant in study clubs, society meetings, regional conferences, and significantly, local dental schools.

Masters of the AGD have influence and prestige within the organization. Keep the commitment to the AGD strong and leverage the Master position to make the AGD an even better organization. Stay engaged, whether it be on a constituent, regional, or national level. Masters' talents are needed as the AGD moves forward into a new era.

Master credentials speak for themselves within the dental profession, but Masters must actively extend their influence and talents into the communities that they serve. Be committed and be leaders. Consumers' Research Council of America has compiled an accurate list of Top Dentists throughout the United States by utilizing a point value system. This method uses a point value for criteria that we deemed valuable in determining Top Dentists. The criteria that was used is as follows:

Experience: Each year the dentist has been in practiceTraining: Education and Continuing EducationBoard Certification: ADA recognized Dental specialtiesProfessional Associations: Membership in Dental associations

Simply put, dentists that have accumulated a certain amount of points qualified for the list. This does not mean that professionals that did not accumulate enough points are not good dentists, but merely did not qualify for this list because of the points needed. Similar studies have been done with other professions using a survey system. This type of study would ask fellow professionals whom they would recommend; we found this method to be more of a popularity contest. For instance, professionals who work in a large office have much more of a chance of being mentioned than a professional who has a small private practice. In addition, many professionals have a financial arrangement for back-and-forth referrals. For these reasons, we developed the point value system. Of course, there is no study that is 100% accurate since this is a subjective call. As with any profession, there will be some degree of variance in opinion. If you survey 100 patients from a particular physician on their satisfaction level, you will undoubtedly hear that some are very satisfied, some moderately satisfied and some dissatisfied. This is really quite normal. We feel that a point value system takes out the personal and emotional factors and deals only with factual criteria. We have made certain assumptions, i.e., more years in practice is better than less years in practice; more education is better than less education, etc. The Top Dentist list that we have compiled is current as of a certain date and other dentists may have qualified since that date. Nonetheless, we feel that this list of Top Dentists is a good starting point to help you find a qualified professional.

According to the American Dental Association, at least 60% of adults in the United States have moderate-to-severe gum disease! No doubt, you've heard some of the terms: Plaque, Tartar, Calculus, Gingivitis, Periodontitis, Pyorrhea, Periodontal Disease, Gum Disease. But what does it all mean? Quite simply, Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease) starts when plaque and tartar (calculus) are allowed to accumulate at the base of your teeth. The bacteria in the plaque leads to an infection in the gums (gingiva) called Gingivitis. Left untreated, the infection spreads to the tissue and bone that holds your teeth in place, a condition called Periodontitis (Pyorrhea). Because of the bacterial infection associated with Periodontitis, tooth abscesses are also common.

Gum Treatment can effectively be used to treat and control even advanced cases of Periodontitis (Pyorrhea), but the more advanced the disease, the more likely it will lead to tooth loss. Prevention and Early Detection are your best defenses against Gum Disease. It is critical to catch and treat Gum Disease early before destruction of bone and tissue has compromised your oral health.
