  • The people. I felt surrounded by smart, motivated, interesting students and faculty who helped me develop both professionally and personally. I also met my wife at Harvard, who was in the medical school class.
  • My mentor. Residency is a challenging time; full of long hours and difficult lessons, but a mentor with vision will make the experience entirely worthwhile. Dr. Lyndon Cooper prepared me well for my career in prosthodontics and I am grateful for all that he has taught me
  • The professional society with which Im most proud to be a member is PEERS. This group is associated with Dentsply Sirona and composed of leading clinicians, educators, and researchers from around North America with a shared commitment to the advancement of implant dentistry.
  • The patients. We encounter patients with a wide variety of dental problems, some of which have no clear solution. I really enjoy building relationships with my patients and finding new ways to help them.
  • A colleague of mine once told me that in prosthodontics, successful outcomes are all about maintaining control. And Ive learned that this lesson is just as true in the business side of restorative dentistry as it is in the clinical. When I saw an opportunity to be in control of my career and how I practice, I decided to take the leap.
  • Im fortunate to have been invited to speak in cities across the country, and Ive met many great people along the way, so it is difficult to pick one. However, I would say my favorite program has been the STEPPS Implant Mini-Residency. This is a 4 part series starting with implant basics and building into more complex concepts. As a multi-part lecture, it is exciting to see the group grow in both skills and confidence.
  • Im not sure if its the biggest issue, but access to accurate information is certainly an issue facing patients seeking dental care. The internet is full of opinions, bias, and falsehoods related to dentistry. Patients frequently tell me that they dont know who to trust or where to go.
  • Its a balancing act. My belief is that patients generally want the simplest solution to the most problems. This means listening to your patients and hearing their priorities. It means understanding what options might be available, how to provide that option at a high level, and then how to make it affordable. Sometimes it just takes time to find the right strategy.
  • That Prosthodontists are automatically more expensive than general dentists. Because Prosthodontists dont generally participate in dental insurance, and we often treat patients with complex dental problems, we often create our own strategies for billing based on what the patient needs, not what their insurance will cover. On the surface, a single procedure may look more expensive, but when you look deeper, and everything is taken into account, prosthodontists generally have fees well within the averages.
