As a practice, we are true believers that preventative care and education are the keys to optimal dental health. We strive to provide dental health care vs. disease care. Infection control in our Encino dental office is also very important to us. To protect our patients and ourselves, we strictly maintain sterilization and cross contamination processes using standards recommended by the American Dental Association (ADA), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Center for Disease Control (CDC). We have also taken water line sterilization and air purification to the highest level using new technology. Read Taking Infection Control to a Higher Level.

Alzheimers disease can be prevented, and in many cases its associated cognitive decline can be reversed. Dale Bredesen, MD,The End of Alzheimers: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline

Dementia is defined as a decline in brain function that goes beyond normal aging. It is a decline that significantly interferes with a persons daily life. Nearly a third of all adults aged 85 and older have some form of dementia, but recent studies have demonstrated dementia can be avoided and reversed by removing inflammatory factors in your life (for example, toxins, inactivity/low exercise, poor nutrition, obstructive sleep apnea/poor oxygenation, gum disease, and gut disease.)

Various neurodegenerative disorders and factors contribute to the development of dementia. The five most common forms of degenerative dementia are Alzheimers disease, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, vascular dementia, and a combination of two or more of the above. Vascular dementia is caused by damage to blood vessels in the brain that interrupts blood flow and oxygen to the brain. The other forms of dementia are associated with an abnormal buildup of proteins between nerve cells in the brain.

Because physicians are slowly catching up with Dr. Bredesens studies and recommendations, Encino dentist Dr. Isaac Comfortes recommends you read The End of Alzheimers: The First Program to Prevent and Reverse Cognitive Decline and become an advocate for your own and loved ones health.

Alzheimers has affected members of my own family, and I am doing all I can to eradicate inflammation in my familys life and to educate my patients at Total Health Dentistry of Encino, says Isaac Comfortes, DDS.

  • Elimination of gum disease, prevention of tooth loss, and maintaining full dental function, even with dentures, improves the dementia patients ability to eat nutritious foods and reduce systemic inflammation that damages the bodys organs, including the brain.
  • You do not have to have a family history of Alzheimers to be impacted by dementia. Bacteria associated with chronic gum disease can travel from the mouth to the brain, and these bacteria increase production of amyloid beta, a component of the amyloid protein buildup that occurs between brain neurons in Alzheimers and Lewy body patients.
  • Knowing that the majority of patients with Alzheimers have gum disease when their dementia is diagnosed is an adequate reason to do your utmost to eliminate and prevent gum inflammation, says Dr. Comfortes. As healthcare providers we want to make sure our patients understand what we can do to help them prevent dementia, maintain total oral health before the possible onset of dementia, and what we can do to slow down disease progression and reverse it once it has begun. We also have the responsibility of educating our patients about the serious health consequences gum inflammation has on many other inflammatory disease conditions, including heart disease and diabetes. They are all related; in fact, diagnosable insulin resistance is a precursor to dementia, as well as to diabetes.

Gum inflammation affects more than the brain. It is a known contributor to cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, and strokes. You owe it to yourself to regularly see a dentist and hygienist who genuinely believe patients deserve the best of integrated oral healthcare. Our Dental Cleanings and Periodontal Care include a review of your medical and dental history and plenty of time to learn about you, inform you, and answer your questions.

We are one of only a few dental practices in southern California to have studied the fundamentals of the Dr. Dale Bredesens Alzheimers program. Our dentist, Isaac Comfortes, DDS, has enrolled in the Apollo Health certification program for dentists to become certified in dementia care in collaboration with medical physicians.

Insulin is a vital hormone that regulates blood sugar (glucose) in your body. As the food you eat is broken down into sugar, the sugar enters your bloodstream, signaling the pancreas to release insulin. Insulin helps the sugar enter your bodys cells so it can be used for energy. Insulin also signals the liver to store blood sugar for later use. As blood sugar enters your cells, levels of the sugar decrease, signaling the pancreas to reduce insulin release.

When a lot of blood sugar is constantly entering the bloodstream, the pancreas constantly pumps out more insulin to move sugar into your cells. Over time, the cell response to the insulin diminishes. The pancreas makes more insulin to try to force your cells to respond, but eventually the pancreas cant keep up and your blood sugar keeps rising.

  • Prediabetes Approximately 88 million American adultsmore than 1 in 3have prediabetes. Of those with prediabetes, more than 84% dont know they have it. Prediabetes puts you at increased risk of developingtype 2 diabetes, heart disease, andstroke.
  • Type 2 diabetes Type 2 diabetes is a more serious condition where high blood sugar is damaging to the body and can cause other serious health problems, such asheart disease, vision loss, kidney disease, and more. Insulin resistance comes in degrees. The more insulin resistant a person with type 2 is, the harder it will be to manage their diabetes because more medication is needed to get enough insulin in the body to achieve target blood sugar levels.
  • Yes. Among the ways to help the body be more receptive to insulin is maintaining optimal oral health. Patients who have insulin resistance should seek regular dental care and be screened for signs of gum inflammation, and they should receive immediate treatment for any signs of gum disease. Thats because research over the last 20 years has demonstrated that:

  • When gums are irritated and inflamed bacteria enter the bloodstream, and diabetes is an inflammatory disease made worse by bacteria circulating in the body. Diabetics tend to have more incidences of gum disease. Diabetics tend to have more chronic gum disease. Diabetes makes it more difficult for your body to fight infection.
  • We are one of only a few dental practices in southern California to offer the Perio Protect System, which has been proven in clinical studies to kill harmful bacteria within 72 hours, says Dr. Isaac Comfortes of Total Health Dentistry of Encino. We are among a few dental practices in the nation to focus on the total health of our patients. We define our dental practice purpose as advancing systemic health through our fine clinical dentistry, and we spend exceptional one-on-one time in conversation with our patients to learn about their health history, their family health history, and how we can help. We also communicate and collaborate well with medical providers to provide a network of support.

  • Rest Put yourself to sleep on a regular schedule that allows you to have around eight hours of sleep per night. Be mindful of how when you exercise during the day, how late you allow yourself to stay up, what you think about, and how what you eat and drink affects your quality of sleep. If you snore at night and are experiencing episodes of oxygen depression (obstructive sleep apnea), seek treatment that will allow you to rest fully and your body to restore itself overnight.
  • Adhere to Medical Advice Adhere to the recommendations of your primary physician and consult with a referred endocrinologist to learn what treatment and follow up protocol is most appropriate for your health situation. Take your situation seriously; its a matter of life.
  • Many of our dental patients have had success in lowering their tested blood sugar levels by regular assessment of their gum health and accepting gum treatment when needed, striving for optimal home oral hygiene, and living healthier lives through exercise, nutrition, elimination of alcohol and tobacco, and stress reduction.

We partner with our patients to develop understanding of their risk and sensitivity to insulin resistance, says Dr. Isaac Comfortes of Total Health Dentistry of Encino. We dont take systemic health lightly, and neither should you. You are a special person deserving of the best information and care we can provide. New patients are always welcome, and we genuinely care about your medical history and how we can improve your total health as we provide evidence-based dental treatment.

I had my first deep cleaning and was a bit nervous but the hygienist was very patient with me as well as sweet and accommodating. She gave me a cozy blanket to keep me warm as the air conditioning was a little cold for me, she gave me headphones to drown out the squealing noise from one of her machines and explained any question I posed. She also laughed at my little jokes and kept the whole two hours very comfortable and easy.
