The team at Total Dental Care of Middle Island believe in the importance of preventative care. We focus on keeping patients in good oral health so that they can live a full, healthy, and enjoyable life that is free from oral pain. This starts by educating our patients on what they can do to stay healthy at home. In our family dentist office we recommend that patients eat a healthy diet that consists of green leafy vegetables, lean protein, nuts, dairy products, and crunchy fruits and veggies. Eating these foods along with drinking water can help to keep teeth healthy and make them stronger. By simultaneously reducing sugar intake, patients can also reduce their risk of cavities.

It is also important to brush and floss throughout the day. Instead of waiting for bedtime to brush teeth, carry a small toothbrush and use it after meals and snacks. This makes it possible to remove sugar and bacteria from the teeth and gums before it has the opportunity to turn into acid that can attack the teeth. This preventative step can greatly reduce a persons' risk of getting a cavity or gum disease. We understand the importance of taking these steps at home and will spend the time necessary to educate and inform patients so that they can stay healthy overall. Education, after all, is essential for living a long and healthy life.

Understanding the importance of these regular dental exams, the staff at Total Dental Care of Middle Island work to make each patient extremely comfortable. This includes being welcoming and kind while performing dental treatments in a way that is painless and relaxing. Patients visit our dentist office because they trust us to do just that take care of their teeth and gums, gently. The majority of our patients are local and come from the greater Middle Island area, we also see patients that are looking for gentle dental care.

Seniors, on the other hand, often struggle with gum disease and oral infections. As people age, their teeth can become weaker and infected more easily. Bone loss is incredibly common with seniors and by conducting regular dental exams, the team at Total Dental Care of Middle Island can help seniors to have strong teeth and reduce the risk of them falling out. Since over seventy percent of U.S. adults suffer from tooth loss, preventative care is important.

A. Primary, or 'baby,' teeth are important for many reasons. Not only do they help children speak clearly and chew naturally, they also aid in forming a path that permanent teeth can follow when they are ready to come in.

A. First, rinse the irritated area with warm salt water and place a cold compress on the face if it is swollen. Give the child acetaminophen for any pain, rather than placing aspirin on the teeth or gums. Finally, see a dentist as soon as possible.

A. Sealants work by filling in the crevasses on the chewing surfaces of the teeth. This shuts out food particles that could get caught in the teeth, causing cavities. The application is fast and comfortable and can effectively protect teeth for many years.

A. Have your family dentist evaluate the fluoride level of your child's primary source of drinking water. If your child is not getting enough fluoride internally through water (especially if the fluoride level is deficient or if your child drinks bottled water without fluoride), then we may prescribe fluoride supplements.

A. Soft plastic mouthguards can be used to protect teeth, lips, cheeks and gums from sport related injuries. A custom-fitted mouthguard will protect your teeth from injuries and even provide protection from severe injuries to the head.

A. There is very little risk in dental X-rays. Family dentists are especially careful to limit the amount of radiation to which you and your family are exposed. Lead aprons and high-speed film are used to ensure safety and minimize the amount of radiation. Digital x-rays provide an even greater level of protection by using up to 90 percent less radiation.

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, periodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease. When periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) develops, usually because of poor oral hygiene practices, the harm is not just to your gums but also to your general health. Continue reading

You may have gum disease if your gums are red, swollen or bleeding. It is natural for this to happen from time to time after eating something that irritates your gums or brushing too aggressively. However, if this happens on a regular basis then you may have some type of gum disease. Another symptom is bad breath, loose teeth, pain while chewing, sensitive teeth or teeth that appear longer. If you live in the Middle Island area, we can examine your gums and let you know what the source of your problem is.

In its early stages, gum disease can cause some irritation and bleeding. There may be some discomfort, but it will be minimal. This stage is called gingivitis. If, however, it is left untreated the disease will spread, and the gums will start to recede by pulling away from the tooth. This creates pockets in the gum tissue that can expose more of the tooth structure and the root system. Once exposed, the tooth and roots are more susceptible to becoming infected as bacteria can gather and start to irritate the area. This can lead to cavities and infections along with bone loss. In severe cases, the bone loss in combination with receding gums can lead to tooth loss. In many cases, adult teeth that fall out due so because of gum disease.

In short bacteria. When bacteria remain on the teeth, it can form plaque and tartar. When this substance becomes stuck in between the teeth and gums, it can lead to gum complication. The best way to prevent this is to brush and floss several times throughout the day along with visiting the dentist for regular teeth cleanings.

There are things you can do to increase your risk for getting gum disease. This includes smoking, hormonal changes, pregnancy, diabetes, certain medications, and genetics. Any time that the blood flow is constricted or reduced, your risk for the disease increases. This is why diabetics and pregnant women are more susceptible to the condition. At Total Dental Care of Middle Island, we recommend that our pregnant patients visit our office at least twice during pregnancy in order to decrease their risk and the pregnancy complications that come with it.

The first step in addressing gum disease is to complete a deep cleaning. By removing plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums, we can help patients throughout the Middle Island area start the healing process. Once the bacteria and plaque have been removed, the gums will start to heal naturally. If the plaque is only around the edge of the gum line, a standard teeth cleaning will work. If it has become trapped between the gums and teeth, a scaling and root planing procedure will be required. In this case, we will need to scrape the plaque off from the teeth underneath the gums. Some dentists use a laser to do so in order to complete the procedure faster.

When surgery is required, it is typically because the gums have receded so significantly. When pockets form in the gum tissue, they need to be restored in order to protect the tooth again. In this case, a gum graft can be helpful. This works by taking tissue from the roof of the mouth or another area and grafting it to the gums so that the gum tissue can start to regenerate. The gums then need to be secured back around the tooth in order to protect it and the roots. If bone loss has occurred as a result of gum disease, a bone graft may be necessary in order to restore and strengthen the tooth. In this procedure natural or synthetic bone is compacted into the area and sealed so that the bone can start to regenerate.

You can prevent periodontitis by taking simple steps that include brushing your teeth after meals, flossing on a daily basis and rinsing your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash once a day. This will help to remove bacteria and sugar from your teeth and gums before they can turn into plaque. Eating a healthy diet that is low in sugar can also help to keep your gums healthy. At Total Dental Care of Middle Island, we also recommend having your teeth cleaned professionally at least twice a year so that we can remove plaque and tartar from hard to reach places. This will ensure that your gums remain healthy.

Has it been a while since you had a general dentist checkup? You know how critical it is to maintain good health. Taking good care of your mouth, teeth and gums is part of your overall wellness. It may be easy to lose track of time, but you cannot forget to keep up on your

Awful , like a warehouse. Not personal at all. Dentists cancel your appointment you waited weeks for last minute . Very over priced. Not happy. Dentists not well trained or good at what they do in my opinion and staff is rude. Try to charge for x rays ever 6 months, sell you mouth pieces and deep cleaning you don't need. Worst then a used car salesman.

If I could give zero stars I would. I wasted 6.5 weeks trying to get an upper denture. The final product fell right out of my mouth even with glue. It was as if it were made for someone else's mouth. He didn't even care!! Whatever happened to pride in your work. Heartbroken. I asked for my money back but I can't get all the time and energy back and have to go to a decent dentist and start all over again. Boo. Terrible place.

This was my 2nd visit at TDC, my appointment was made for a wisdom tooth extraction. On the day of appointment the surgeon unfortunately wasn't able to do the procedure due to not having everything that was needed to have a successful procedure. I was very upset and expressed how unhappy I was because I was experiencing unbearable pain. The staff at TDC did everything they possibly could to accommodate me with my pain, they offered me as much support as they possibly could and assisted me with my finical situation. They all went above an beyond to accommodate me a few days later an it was a wonderful experience. Although we face trials and tribulations in life it's great when there is a supportive team to make the dream work. Thanks again to all the staff at TDC you guys rock!!!

An appointment that I was gravely dreading to get my three front teeth/roots removed turned out to be one of the most gratifying and pleasings visits I have ever had at a dentist's office. Not only is the front desk staff warm and welcoming, they had a sense of humor and friendliness that instantly comforts you. Dr.Zatcoff's friendly demeanor and calming approach as he worked his craft, along with his charming, knowledgeable and obliging assistant, Nellie, who soothed the experience for me, I noticed I was feeling no pain, nothing at all! As he calmly and meticulously stitched up the area, I was told it was over...it honestly seemed like five minutes! Dr. Zatcoff is not only a true expert in his field, he has a bedside manner that outshines most others. He is quick, competent, knowledgeable, personable and makes you feel like family. I cannot recommend Total Dental Care enough.

The staff of dentists and hygienists at Total Dental Care are amazing. They are friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. I go to Toni for my cleanings. She is gentle, thorough and truthfull with my dental care. Dr. Zatcoff is my periodontist. He is absolutely wonderful. He is very friendly, caring and knowledgeable. He gave me my first implant a couple of years ago. He was able to save part of my bridge and get away with one implant instead of two. I was nervous and unsure but he explained everything to me and made me feel confident. Years back and had to go to another dental practice due to insurance and was so thrilled to be able to return as they became a provider on my plan again. If your looking for a great dental team, I truly recommend Total Dental Care in Middle Island, NY.
