Dr. Cowan grew up in Scarborough, a small coastal town situated in southeastern Maine and obtained her Bachelor of Science from Rhodes College and Doctor of Dental Medicine from University of New England College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Cowan discovered her passion for health care by volunteering in the Emergency Room at a local hospital during college.

Dr. James Dollar is a family dentist bringing years of experience and expertise to Tidewater Family Dentistry in Newport News, VA. A native of Georgia, he was originally encouraged to pursue a career in dentistry by mentors in his church. Dr. Dollar received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Dollar likes that general dentistry affords him opportunities to build lasting relationships with his patients and to collaborate regularly with local dental specialists. He is especially proud that his son Matt followed in his footsteps by also pursuing a career in dentistry.

He is known to treat patients as he would treat members of his own family and enjoys developing long-term relationships with individuals and families over time.

Dr. Owen enjoys spending time with his wife, Meredith, his son, Tommy, and their yellow lab, Woody. When not in the office, he can be found saltwater fishing, waterfowl hunting, boating, playing tennis and racquetball, or rooting for his favorite ACC and professional teams!

Dr. Baker enjoys hot, flow and restorative yoga, walking her three-year-old long-haired chihuahua named Jackie O., playing tennis, doing The New York Times crossword puzzle and playing Dungeons and Dragons!

Through community service, internships, and fellowships at non-profit dental clinics she discovered not only the enormous need for dental care, but her passion for helping others. She realized that dentistry is not just what she does with her hands, but what she does with her heart.

Dr. Cowan loves empowering patients to take ownership of their oral health through education, helping them feel that they have the ability to achieve their oral health goals and she can be a part of that journey. Dr. Cowan is an incredibly social person who truly enjoys getting to know patients on a personal level. She feels that understanding what motivates patients, working in a team, and achieving goals are just some of the best parts of being a dentist. Dr. Cowan especially enjoys treating pediatric patients and finds their creative imaginations, goofy personalities, and adaptive mindsets inspiring to work with.

As an avid nature lover, outside the office, she can be found outdoors hiking, walking, rollerblading, and adventuring with her friends and family. She also enjoys weightlifting, dancing, discovering good music and trying new recipes in the kitchen or exploring restaurants from a variety of cuisines. She has a passion for trying new and exciting things, she has participated in the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade on a 6-foot unicycle, went skydiving in the oldest desert in the world (Namibian Desert), and spent time competitively Irish dancing.
