Providing world-class dentistry and improving my patients dental function, overall health, and aesthetics is extremely fulfilling, both on a personal and a professional level. Even after practicing dentistry for 33 years, each day continues to be unique because each case and every patient is unique. Practicing in the heart of the melting pot of the world, Ive met and have come to know many people from all corners of the globe and have had cultural exchanges from a unique cross section of New Yorkers, all of whom enrich me personally.
I completed my undergraduate education at Brandeis University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology in 1978. I earned my Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1981 from New York University College of Dentistry. While my formal education is complete, my thirst for knowledge is never ending. I attend numerous forms of continuing education every year and I am always incorporating new and improved advanced dental equipment, materials and techniques to improve patient care and satisfaction.
I work in association with Donated Dental Services, a program for disadvantaged people with dental needs that have neither the financial resources nor public assistance for their dental care. The smiles and grateful responses I receive from these patients are the warmest and most sincere of all, sometimes even accompanied by tears of joy upon completion of their care. These add to some of my fondest memories from my years of practice.
While I may be passionate about my Green Bay Packers and, over the past 33 years of establishing Herald Square Dental & The Denture Center as one of New York Citys premier dental offices, my practice is of great importance to me however, the reality is that I am most passionate about my family. Both my wife, Joan and myself come from very close families and we are the proud parents of three grown young men, James, Joshua, and Lucas, and our wonderful dog, Riggs. Although little league baseball, recreation league basketball, Jazz band, and forensics has faded into spirited debates about politics and our beloved NY Mets, it is always with love, warmth, and passion. My hobbies of hiking and traveling would be empty if I were not sharing those with the one I am most passionate about, my wife Joanie!

I can't say enough about my first experience with the Smilist in Smithtown! The entire office staff is so pleasant and efficient. Dr. Arena and Charlene were amazing! I have tremendous anxiety about visiting the dentist, but Charlene put me at ease before Dr. Arena even entered the room. Dr. Arena explained everything to me as we went along. I walked into the office with pain, and left with no pain and on my way to better dental health. Thank you Dr. Phil and team!

From the moment you come through the front door you are welcomed by your friendly staff. My appointment was kept promptly at designated time. I had x rays and a deep dental cleaning by Amanda who was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and explained everything she was doing. I would highly recommend this practice to my friends and family. I have visited the Smithtown office and it made going to the dentist a memorable experience.

Dr Arena is an amazing dentist. He explains all the steps as you go through your procedure. He asks if you are ok and if you need a break. His staff are equally as amazing. They are nice and kind and care about their patients. I always recommend Dr. Arena and his staff.

I have severe anxiety, and from the front desk to the doctor, the service they provided was outstanding. I have never been to a dentist office that stopped to listen, and took care of me, the way that they did. Excellent providers!!!!!!

Dr. Arena is the absolute best! So accommodating and caring. He does fast, accurate and amazing work! He took the time to explain what was going on and made us feel very comfortable. Christine at the front desk is also so wonderful with scheduling and payment option questions. Highly recommend seeing them for your dental needs!

Wow! What an experience. My dentist was soo lovely and advised I didn't need a huge procedure that another dentist advised was necessary which would have cost me a lot of money. So instead of just being in it for the money I felt like I was put first as opposed to just making money from me in anyway possible and that is a rare feeling in this day of age in regards to business practises. Not only that but dr. Q( I think it was q it was just a letter I remember) also the dental Assistant was lovely and personable putting me at ease. Even the reception had personality. It was start to finish great service and care. I couldn't recommend more. Thank you Dr Q* and all staff. I will be back.
