Providing world-class dentistry and improving my patients dental function, overall health, and aesthetics is extremely fulfilling, both on a personal and a professional level. Even after practicing dentistry for 33 years, each day continues to be unique because each case and every patient is unique. Practicing in the heart of the melting pot of the world, Ive met and have come to know many people from all corners of the globe and have had cultural exchanges from a unique cross section of New Yorkers, all of whom enrich me personally.

I completed my undergraduate education at Brandeis University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology in 1978. I earned my Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1981 from New York University College of Dentistry. While my formal education is complete, my thirst for knowledge is never ending. I attend numerous forms of continuing education every year and I am always incorporating new and improved advanced dental equipment, materials and techniques to improve patient care and satisfaction.

I work in association with Donated Dental Services, a program for disadvantaged people with dental needs that have neither the financial resources nor public assistance for their dental care. The smiles and grateful responses I receive from these patients are the warmest and most sincere of all, sometimes even accompanied by tears of joy upon completion of their care. These add to some of my fondest memories from my years of practice.

While I may be passionate about my Green Bay Packers and, over the past 33 years of establishing Herald Square Dental & The Denture Center as one of New York Citys premier dental offices, my practice is of great importance to me however, the reality is that I am most passionate about my family. Both my wife, Joan and myself come from very close families and we are the proud parents of three grown young men, James, Joshua, and Lucas, and our wonderful dog, Riggs. Although little league baseball, recreation league basketball, Jazz band, and forensics has faded into spirited debates about politics and our beloved NY Mets, it is always with love, warmth, and passion. My hobbies of hiking and traveling would be empty if I were not sharing those with the one I am most passionate about, my wife Joanie!

Today I visited The Smilist for the first time due to a toothache and have to say it was a pleasant visit. When I first walked in I was impressed with the reception and waiting room area. Beautiful, clean, nicely decorated. I had X rays taken and Dr. Leary was wonderful in explaining my issues and offered options to proceed Since my affected tooth was way in the back we decided that extraction would be best and most economical. The procedure was painless and quickly done. Very pleased with The Similist and will be a repeat client

This was the first time I went to this dentist. I was greeted by the front desk receptionist with a smile and said good morning. The technician and hygienist were also very pleasant and friendly. Dr. Leary is very nice and friendly too. I would recommend family and friends with no problem

Never in my life have I ever dealt with such an absolutely unprofessional and nasty office staff. Booked an emergency appointment online Saturday, submited documents Saturday, and get no less then 3 harassing nasty & demanding phone calls at 830 am. I didn't even have the time to listen to my voicemail before they called back and demanded the insurance I already provided. Cut me off mid sentence to transfer me, argued me about absolutely nothing and then proceeded to tell me I'm rude? Reboked elsewhere. I don't need to give my money to such a horrible unprofessional office. Who has the time to be treated so poorly? I'd give them 0 stars if I could. What an embarassment. You lost a well paying customer and who knows how many others in future with your terrible attitude. I feel bad for your doctors.

Call the patients prior to their appointments, I scheduled mainly for a routine visit with teeth pain & clarified online the reason for my appointment. Nothing was done to help my pain & discomfort. No hygienist to clean that needs to be scheduled separately? It was explained as a scheduling error. I was told during my appointment my issue is teeth grinding, that I have no cavities(which is untrue I can see cavities, my previous dentist stated I had some small ones as well back when I went years ago w private insurance, might I add). I was brushed off as "a symptom of covid era" when tooth grinding is known to increase sensitivity which I repeatedly explained to the dentist I was suffering quite severely from. Not only this but I told the dentist I had lost a filling 6 months ago, which he stated he could not see, perhaps I had a chipped tooth. Again why nothing, no treatment was offered? I don't understand. I was incorrectly scheduled for emergency(again to clarify I scheduled the appointment online over a week prior) when I stated I had tooth pain, and needed a cleaning due to not going to a dentist for a long time(4-5 years). Then was recommended to pick up a mouth guard with no prescription as it "wouldn't be covered by my insurance". Didn't even ask if I was interested in paying out of pocket(I WAS) I wanted to discuss setting up appointments for teeth whitening, setting up a payment plan etc. Overall I feel like I was mistreated due to my insurance. Had I had private insurance I doubt I would've been treated in this manner. Overall I waited over a week for an appointment that literally nothing was done other than telling me about my teeth grinding issue which I have been aware of for years. No treatment was done, no flouride applied to my teeth, literally nothing but X-rays that can be billed to the insurance company for & I had to reschedule for over a month for the actual reason of my visit. Very disappointed & wouldn't recommend this practice based on my experience. Will give one more try with next months cleaning...hopefully actually doing something to help my issues. Post note: the female worker who took my X-rays was kind & compassionate.

After getting an appointment and explaining that its the only day that my wife an i can come in and beg them that they dont change it because i work EMS and its the 1 day i can come in they tell me it wont happen they call me about a day and a half before our appointment to tell say this: uh hello im calling to let u know that the doctor thats working on the day of your appointment doesnt take ur insurance so u can come in on the 1nd of next month if u want?... I ask her.. so u have doctors that take my insurance and some that dont?? She says: yes do u want the appointment? Me: no thank u.. And before i can ask than why would u make the appointment on that day if u already have my insurance or why would u confirm it like a week ago after i explained its the only day i can come in she says.. ok take care bye. And clicks in my face without a care.. Shame another good facility thats getting ruined by bad employees that they chose to put at the front dest to represent that business amd if u want to know who im talking to just walk and and look for the 1 girl that looks annoyed for no reason she will be the 1 taking appointments unfortunately..
