Providing world-class dentistry and improving my patients dental function, overall health, and aesthetics is extremely fulfilling, both on a personal and a professional level. Even after practicing dentistry for 33 years, each day continues to be unique because each case and every patient is unique. Practicing in the heart of the melting pot of the world, Ive met and have come to know many people from all corners of the globe and have had cultural exchanges from a unique cross section of New Yorkers, all of whom enrich me personally.
I completed my undergraduate education at Brandeis University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology in 1978. I earned my Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1981 from New York University College of Dentistry. While my formal education is complete, my thirst for knowledge is never ending. I attend numerous forms of continuing education every year and I am always incorporating new and improved advanced dental equipment, materials and techniques to improve patient care and satisfaction.
I work in association with Donated Dental Services, a program for disadvantaged people with dental needs that have neither the financial resources nor public assistance for their dental care. The smiles and grateful responses I receive from these patients are the warmest and most sincere of all, sometimes even accompanied by tears of joy upon completion of their care. These add to some of my fondest memories from my years of practice.
While I may be passionate about my Green Bay Packers and, over the past 33 years of establishing Herald Square Dental & The Denture Center as one of New York Citys premier dental offices, my practice is of great importance to me however, the reality is that I am most passionate about my family. Both my wife, Joan and myself come from very close families and we are the proud parents of three grown young men, James, Joshua, and Lucas, and our wonderful dog, Riggs. Although little league baseball, recreation league basketball, Jazz band, and forensics has faded into spirited debates about politics and our beloved NY Mets, it is always with love, warmth, and passion. My hobbies of hiking and traveling would be empty if I were not sharing those with the one I am most passionate about, my wife Joanie!

Dr. Culpepper and his Assistants were entertaining AND professional. I had a hole in my tooth and he took me in right away with a root canal. My pain was so bad, and I was suffering also with a fever due to an infection. After the root canal he prescribed an antibiotic for the infection. We need more doctors like Dr. Culpepper. He helped fix my problem right then and there without sending me away with pain-killers and an appointment weeks later. We need more Dr. Culpepper!! I highly recommend him!

Best dental experience I've had in my entire adult life. My only regret is not finding Dr. Culpepper sooner. He is exactly the doctor/dentist you want caring for you. He's thorough, thoughtful of both your financial and medical situation. He's a problem solver and genuinely cares. He's also top notch at fillings. Had me laughing all through the procedure! Also, the hygienist was amazing. I had a deep cleaning done for the first time in over 20 years and i barely felt a thing. She was gentle and attentive. My gums have never felt better! I love this office and highly recommend a visit.

Went once for my usual dental half-annual clean up / check up and the doc didn't ask any qs, put me into a chair and started some treatments which included some medication to numb my mouth ( what if I have allergy for such medication?!) and only when he did that I realized that something is wrong here ( it was super fast, matter of a couple of minutes) and I asked what he is doing. He found out that I am not that patient that he assumed. Nobody even apologized to me or admitted the mistake. The clean-up procedure was not the best one I experienced. At the end he insisted to work on my cavities which i didn't have at all ( checked with another dental in next week to double check his words). Additionally, it is hard to schedule or reschedule an appointment with them. Devastated with the poor quality of services.

The doctor and the staff at the Smilist Dental were fabulous. I did my first root canal and I was scared and nervous. The doctor calmed me down and he also made me feel safe and comfortable. I highly recommend The Smilist Dental Group.

Hygienist, Richard, is so helpful-- two visits now and each time I left feeling like a learned something! He's patient, gentle and thorough with his cleanings. Dr. Culpepper is efficient and I like his sense of humor. Feeling good. Pleasant staff in the front and clean space. Thanks smilist !

Dr. Culpepper was friendly, professional, knowledgeable, funny and honest. I mention honesty because I came to Dr. Culpepper after an exam with another practice that was more interested in upsell. His combination of skill, integrity and humor made the exam and consultation a pleasure. I only wish I'd gone to him sooner so that my dental visits would have been more regular.

The Smilist Greenpoint has the best staff ever. The front desk (Bianca !) and all the techs are super sweet. Dr. Culpepper is an artist- I needed some major repairs, and he made my teeth look really natural and healthy again. If you're afraid of/nervous about the dentist, definitely give them a chance.

Have never written a google review before, but I am so happy with this dentist office that I just have to! I have spent so much time in Brooklyn trying to find a kind & fair dentist, and this place is it! The front desk staff is incredible - they're so knowledgeable and helpful and always friendly. The whole practice really seems to be built around taking care of their patients health and getting issues fixed instead of just trying to make money. I am so beyond thrilled to have found this place, and recommend it to everyone I know. Thank you guys!

Everyone was extremely professional and polite. Bianca was super welcoming and made me feel right at home. Doctor Emma eased my anxious mind and made my visit pleasant. And the hygienist Richard was by far the most gentle, kind man. He constantly ensured that I was comfortable and not feeling any discomfort.
