Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss. Gum disease has two primary stages. If diagnosed and treated in the first stage, the condition can be reversed and tooth loss can usually be prevented. In order to prevent gum disease, practice good oral hygiene and visit your dentist for cleanings and check-ups twice a year.

This stage only affects the soft tissue of the gums, and the patient may not experience any discomfort. Although the symptoms may be very mild, it is important to diagnose gum disease in this early stage before it progresses to periodontitis.

Periodontitis is the name for more advanced periodontal disease and if permitted to progress to this point, not only the gums are affected but the bone structures supporting the teeth will be compromised.

A build-up of bacteria causes Gingivitis. In its early stages, inflammation around the gums is observable, with gum tissues appearing red and swollen. Gums that are easily irritated or that bleed during tooth brushing indicate the presence of Gingivitis. Removal of the plaque buildup is necessary to prevent the development of gum disease.

As the gums become more inflamed, they start to pull away from the teeth, forming spaces known as periodontal pockets. Food, bacteria, and plaque begin to collect in the pockets, leading to infection. The surrounding bone becomes damaged both by bacterial toxins and by the immune systemsresponse to infection.

I have been going to The Meletiou's for 22+ yrs. Not just me, my family, my kids... I have been cared for, blessed to be in Dr Chris & Jim's practice. My family loves them. The staff, the hygenists, the dentists are not just professional & capable but also friends & feel like family. They are the best dentists in the area & it is the best dental practice in the city. From the moment you enter the door with a welcome & smile, to the moment you leave...you "feel cared for" They are wonderful & I recommend them highly.

Dr. Chris, Winnie, and the office staff are all friendly, helpful, explain treatment options, and give excellent care. They actually care about each individual. Our family started being patients of the previous dentists, Dr. Steve and Dr. Debbie Hix about 30+ years ago. The transition to Dr Meletiou and Dr. Meletiou was smooth. Our local adult children and grandson are also patients. I had Invisalign treatment last year and am pleased with how things are going.

First class experiences there. They took me in with 5 minutes notice to replace a loose crown. All staff are professional, caring, and courteous.

I was concerned about a rough place on a front tooth and fearful it would chip. Dr. Jim saw me the same day and also noticed my retainer wire had come loose. Fixed that also. Normally I wouldn't drive to Huntersville as there are plenty of dentist in Mooresville. However, these good folks take such good care of me I wouldn't go anywhere else.
