If I had listened to Dr. Maroon I would have spent nearly $300 on 12 fillings I did not need. I went in to their office for my first time to get an annual cleaning. I take good care of my teeth and have never had a cavity in my adult teeth. After taking x-rays the hygienist and dentist informed me I needed 12 fillings. I asked them to show me the cavities on the x-rays. They kept heightening the contrast of the x-rays (I would later learn from another dentist this is a common way to exaggerate shadows into looking like cavities) as they showed them to me. With the contrast up I could see a few but many I still could not make out. I assumed it was the fact I have untrained eyes, so I scheduled an appointment to come back for fillings and paid up front so I could get a discount on the sizable amount. Several hours after my cleaning it still didn't seem right that after 20 years without a single cavity a dozen would suddenly appear. So I made an appointment for a second opinion with my phenomenal previous dentist of 5 years who has won San Diego's Top Dentists award multiple years. She looked at me and said "If they had drilled into your beautiful, healthy teeth I would have cried." Only one of my "cavities" is actually of any note and it still hasn't worn through the enamel in the 4 years they've been monitoring it, in fact she said I could likely reverse it with consistent flossing and mouthwash. The other 11, just high contrast and shadows viewed incorrectly in order to exaggerate the x-ray and score over a thousand dollars from my insurance company, not to mention several hundred dollars from my own pocket. I contacted Dr. Maroon's office to cancel my appointment and request a refund. After 4 phone calls and one in-person encounter over the span of almost 3 months I did finally get my money back! But not all of it. They kept a portion for "services given the day of the appointment" which were my cleaning and x-rays - entirely covered by insurance... but I was just glad to have most my money back and be rid of the situation. I will say, their new office is beautiful, the hygienist who cleaned my teeth was very friendly and Stephen who works the front desk is phenomenal at his job - professional, efficient and highly organized. They're not monsters or anything. But the office as a whole definitely did try to scam me into getting over $1,000 of fillings that were in no way necessary and would have permanently degraded my teeth. I would hate to see this happen to someone else. So sorry, but no stars for you.
