Despite being uncomfortable, dry mouth alone is not a severe issue as long as it is not persistent. If it is, it can lead to various long-term health issues, ranging from irritating to dangerous. Someone who suffers from chronic dry mouth will likely experience mouth sores, splits at the corners of the mouth, cracked lips, increased plaque buildup & a greater risk of tooth decay & gum disease. You might even start to have nutrition issues, because the lack of saliva makes it more difficult to break down food when you eat.
Even if your dry mouth does not seem to be persistent, it is important to stay on top of treating it. The good news is that treatment is simple for most cases of dry mouth. First, make sure you stay hydrated by sipping on water throughout the day. For your dental & overall health, you should drink lots of water anyway! Dehydration, which dry mouth can be a sign of, is a serious health risk.
Other simple things you can do to treat dry mouth include chewing sugarless gum & limiting the salt, sugar & caffeinated drinks in your diet. Some people might recommend sucking on an ice cube or sugarless hard candy, but this can actually damage your teeth, so dont do it! You can also purchase nonprescription saliva substitutes over the counter to reduce your current issues.
If you use tobacco or drink alcohol, cut back on those or find a way to quit. Even if you dont think smoking or drinking is the root cause, those activities can irritate a dry mouth, so you should limit or stop them entirely. Plus, theyre just bad for you!
The best treatment for dry mouth always depends on the specific cause, so if home remedies or over-the-counter solutions dont prevent your dry mouth, it can indicate a more serious underlying health issue. In serious cases it is best to visit a physician or dentist who can work with you to figure out the root cause of your dry mouth & help you treat it.

Dr. Russ undertook an oral surgery externship at the Hampton VA Medical Center & advanced implant training at University of North Carolina. He is a past president of the Peninsula Dental Association & a fellow of the Virginia Dental Association. He is meticulous in providing the highest level of comprehensive care for his patients in a comfortable & caring environment. True to his roots, he loves boating, fishing & the many water activities a Poquoson life provides.
Dr. Donald Taylor also earned his bachelors degree from the College of William & Mary. He then completed his doctorate at the Medical College of Virginia in 1979. Years of clinical experience & advanced courses in cosmetic dentistry, endodontics, dental surgery, sedation & implants have made him competent in treating the most complex dental conditions & a valuable mentor to his son, Dr. Russ. Dr. Don has been recently honored as a Life Member of the American Dental Association for his lifelong commitment to advancing dentistry. In his free time, he enjoys serving in Kiwanis, spending time with his family & being a grandfather to his three grandchildren. Had my second great visit today! I had been terrified to go to the dentist until I found this office. The staff is welcoming and friendly, Dr. Taylor is gentle and careful, and he makes me laugh and relax. He makes certain not to cause any pain and is willing to use both nitrous oxide gas and Novocaine to ensure a pain-free and actually pleasant experience. No other dentist will ever come near me!

Per usual I received excellent care. I love how both Dr. Taylors are extremely intelligent and entertaining. Their staff are always extremely polite and professional, also. They take the time to explain procedures and equipment in more detail then I think other dentist offices would. I love learning new things and how they keep up with advances in their field and have pretty high speed equipment. It's impressive what is possible and very reassuring to receive care at a practice that tries to provide the best and safest care by using modern technology and staying up to date with the literature for their field. Even the dental hygienists exhibit exemplary knowledge and professionalism. I have been dealing with immense tooth pain on one side of my mouth for many years and as soon as I brought it to their attention here they have tried to fix the problem. First, they started out with simple steps before jumping to what ultimately helped, which was a root canal. I was in such fear of a root canal because of all the horror stories growing up, but it was such an easy in an out procedure I am just blown away. If you want to receive quality care from professionals who know what they're doing and take pride in their work then this is the place for you.

Hello, I had an appointment for a consultation for implants (2) today. X-rays were taken, Dr. Taylor discussed the procedures in depth. An estimate of costs was discussed. It was not until he asked me about any possible health issues that a problem was raised. I have been taking Fosomax for about a year. I had listed it on my health history, which he hadn't looked at. He told me I would not be a good candidate for implants. My suggestion for the future is for the doctors to look at the health histories and medications taken before an exam/x-rays are conducted. This would save time for all concerned. On a positive note, everyone in the office was very friendly and helpful. Thank you.

Being a healthcare consultant and being a military spouse has allowed me to work with a lot providers and visit a lot of medical offices across the country for the past 10 years. I have to say that this office is a hidden gem! Taylor Dental Care offers world class dental services right here, in the Poquoson region of Virginia. This privately owned family practice consists of father and son providers. I have been seen by both Dr. Donald Taylor (father) and Dr. Russell Taylor (son) and they have both made me feel comfortable and at ease. Dr Russell is a fellow of the Virginia Dental Association and Dr Donald is an honored life member of the American Dental Association. Their cheerful demeanor and professional expertise are unlike any dentist I've ever visited. I have high anxiety when it comes to dental offices & treatments. Every staff member that has helped me during various appts has been so kind, patient and understanding as well. They take their time with my dental care and have never made feel rushed. Another important thing for me is that when I call the office there is someone always kind and cheerful picking up the phone. I don't have to dial an #800, and every front desk staff member has been able to help me with anything I've ever needed from rescheduling appts, to having questions about my bill, etc. I feel truly grateful to have this caliber of dental care right in my backyard. If you are looking for a dental office please give this office a try, I promise you won't go anywhere else after your first appt. They accept various insurances and also offer reasonable self pay plans for those without insurance coverage. Thank you to everyone at Taylor Dental! Keep up the great work!
