She practiced dentistry for 31 years, beginning as an interim director at a dental clinic in Huntersville Oaks. She entered into private practice in Charlotte in 1992 and then moved to Mooresville, where she and her husband, Richard, practiced until 2016. Throughout her career, she always strove to help patients maintain their best possible dentition, ensure that their smiles functioned comfortably and have aesthetically pleasing smiles throughout their lives.
Dr. Olsen says that it was a total surprise when their daughter said that she planned to go to dental school, since she had always been focused on music and performance. She is humbled that the example she and her husband set inspired their daughter to follow in their footsteps. She has been very proud to watch Dr. Taylor develop into a caring, accomplished dentist and a compassionate business owner.
Now that she is retired, Dr. Olsen spends her time kayaking, cooking, gardening and reading. She also serves as a guardian ad litem for Iredell County. While she enjoys having time to spend with her family and grandchildren, she misses the relationships she had with her patients and staff.
Dr. Richard Olsen graduated fromEastern Michigan Universitywith a major in chemistry and minor in biology in 1978. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery at theUniversity of Michiganin 1980. He served his general practice residency at Sinai Hospital of Detroit in 1980 and 1981 and completed the Dawson Center Continuum. He spent 13 years teaching graduate dental studies at the Carolina Medical Center and was in private practice until 2016. He is a member of the American Dental Association, theNorth Carolina Dental Association, the Iredell County Dental Society, thePierre Fauchard Academy, theAcademy of Dentistry International, and theInternational College of Dentists.
As a dentist, he made it a priority to provide quality, comprehensive care to patients who desired to be pain-free and enjoy a high level of function and great aesthetics for their smiles. He is married to Donna, who is his wife, friend and colleague. They have a daughter, Laura, and a son, Erik.
When Dr. Taylor told him that she wanted to become a dentist, he was shocked on one hand, since she was always focused on music, but on the other, we was not surprised since she is highly motivated and directed and wants to help others. He enjoyed working with her and never thought that he could work side by side with his child. Dr. Taylor has proven to be what he expected: a motivated dentist who has turned into a highly-skilled practitioner.
Now that he is retired, Dr. Olsen enjoys not having to set his alarm and having more time to spend with his grandkids. He enjoys woodworking, waterskiing, reading and gardening, as well as traveling and DIY home improvement projects. But he still misses the relationships with the patients and staff that he has had the privilege to know.

Our office has been providing dentistry in Mooresville, North Carolina, and the surrounding areas since 1991, and Dr. Laura Olsen Taylor is proud to be part of a family tradition of excellent dental care. Although you may know our office as Olsen Taylor General Dentistry, we are excited to debut our new name: Taylord Smiles. As you have probably guessed, the new name is a play on the custom Taylord comprehensive dentistry we do, along with reconstructions that are Taylord to each individuals needs, not just tooth-by-tooth dentistry. And it also reflects the history of the practice when it was owned by Dr. Taylors parents, Dr. Richard Olsen and Dr. Donna Olsen.
Our original practice logo was based on the philosophy of theDawson Academy, whose principles form the foundation of our practice. The Dawson Academy trains dentist to look at the bigger picture when it comes to our patients smiles as well as effectively doing everyday dentistry to create healthy jaw joints and bites. In our approach, we look at the patients oral and systemic health, soft tissues, teeth, bone, and musculature of the face and mouth.
Our second logo was created when Dr. Taylors parents sold the practice in Charlotte and opened the Mooresville office in 2008. It was then that Dr. Taylor expressed her interest in dentistry instead of continuing to study opera in graduate school. That logo reflected the family of dentists at our practice.
The logo was modernized once Dr. Taylor purchased the practice in 2016, but we kept some of the same themes. Dr. Taylor spent the next four years coming into her own as a dentist and making the practice her own while still retaining the precision and foundation her parents created. In 2020, she decided it was time to rebrand the practice.
