You're not unlike most people the term root canal can send shivers down spines. However, preconceived notions that root canal treatment is filled with pain and discomfort are nothing more than outdated myths. In fact, root canal treatment doesn't cause pain but actually relieves it. Advances have made the treatment a virtually pain-free experience, many times accomplished in a single visit.

Root canal or endodontic treatment (endo-inside, dont-tooth) is necessary when the inside, or pulp of a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. The pulp contains the nerves and blood vessels essentially they keep the tooth vital (alive). It is through the pulp that temperature and pain are perceived. The inflammation or infection can have many causes but mostly are the result of deep decay or trauma.

The procedure begins by administering a local anesthetic to relieve pain. This will numb the tooth and surrounding area so that the treatment is no more uncomfortable than a filling. A common misconception is that root canal treatment is a painful experience when in actuality, it's quite the opposite.

A small opening in the chewing surface of your tooth is created to gain access to the pulp. Very small instruments are used to remove dead and dying tissue and clean the pulp from the inside, allowing the root canals to be cleaned and disinfected. The canals are specially shaped and prepared so that they can be sealed with biocompatible filling materials. They are coated with an adhesive cement to ensure that they are completely sealed to prevent future infection.

For the first few days after treatment, your tooth may feel tender or sensitive, especially if there was pain or infection before the procedure. Most discomfort can be relieved by over-the-counter (OTC) medication like aspirin or ibuprofen. If you have discomfort or pain that lasts more than a few days or if there are other increasing symptoms, call your dentist. Prescription medications including antibiotics may be indicated.

You should not chew or bite on the treated tooth until you have seen your dentist, particularly if part of the tooth has been lost to decay, a large filling or trauma. A crown or other restoration is usually needed to further protect and restore the tooth to full function and is extremely important in ensuring long-term success. Contact your dentist as soon as possible to arrange for any necessary treatment.

Root canal infection can spread into the bone immediately around the root end if left untreated, although it usually remains localized to the area. An association has been shown between periodontal (gum) and to a lesser extent, endodontic (root canal) infection and some systemic (general) body diseases, but it is rare in an otherwise healthy person. Be safe, don't wait to get a root canal treatment done; just because it has stopped hurting doesn't mean it's not infected. Root canal treatment is designed to disinfect the tooth and stop spread of infection making it safe and effective.

All general dentists have received training in endodontic treatment and can perform most endodontic procedures, depending on their comfort level. Often they refer people needing complicated root canal treatment to endodontists, who have had specialized training and limit their practices to endodontic diagnosis and treatment. Endodontists perform routine as well as difficult and more complex procedures and are also experienced in helping to diagnose the cause of oral and facial pain that can be difficult to determine.

The cost varies depending on how severe the problem is and which tooth is affected. Cost is based on the number of canals, degree of difficulty and location of the tooth in the mouth; for example, front teeth are easier to treat than back teeth. Root canal treatment is usually covered by dental insurance depending on your coverage. If it isn't your dentist may also offer you a payment plan.

You're right, there are a lot of topics to cover in this area. In fact, endodontics is a whole specialty of dentistry dedicated to root canal treatment. Endodontics is represented by the American Association of Endodontists, a professional group that is also an educational resource for the public.

FABULOUS ENDODONTIST - was referred to by my dentist Dr Kaplan and she is amazing - I had a very severe root canal that needed to be done and they were able to squeeze me in 2 weeks early - extremely professional and sent me all paperwork before hand to fill in so check in was a breeze- all other endodontist I called were charging 2200-750 for a root canal!!! Dr Borinos had the best service and best price because after my insurance it was only $300 versus 750 and up any place else. And with Dr borinos you are NOT compromising on quality and not braking the bank. Such a nice place and did amazing work on my extensive root canal procedure. 10/10 would recommend for anyone who wants extremely high quality work for an affordable price. I love them and will refer anyone I know to them. She truly cares about her patients and will being. I don't know any other place that follows up the next day to make sure everything is going great and you are okay. It is hard now a days to find a doctors who only truly cares about their craft and your wellbeing but I must say Dr Borinos is one of the many few who do.

I had a great experience with my consultation visit with Dr. Borinos. I went to a few dentists to find out where my pain was coming from and nobody could find it until Dr. Bruno's assistant, Diane took a CAT scan and the problem was found. Besides Dr. Borinos being Awesome, her assistant Diane and receptionist Karen made me feel like family . Everyone here is caring, professional and friendly !!!!!! I'm back again today to begin my root canal and once again Diane and Karen were Awesome. Dr. Borinos sure runs a Classy practice!!!

The receptionist was wonderful! The dental assistant was wonderful too! As for Dr. Barinos that's another story!!! She is very dishonest! I went to her for a consultation for two teeth that my regular dentist wanted to have a root specialist look at and she was in my UFT book and listed as a participating root specialist! I waited one month for the appointment and went there with a copy of the x-rays my dentist took at his office. She said that she could not use those and I would have to take new x-rays. I did and she then stated she also need to take a panoramic mri x-ray which was an extra cost. She looked at them for all of 5 minutes and then proceeded to tell me she could not help me and both teeth need to be pulled out! I made an appointment with my surgeon to pull both teeth out and he and my regular dentist could not understand why Dr. Barinos would tell me that! Thank God for my dentist and surgeon who took the time to realize her advice was wrong! I was also told that she should have not done a panoramic mri and that it was unnecessary and so were the additional x-rays done at her office! She is a ripoff and charged me $325.00 out of pocket! Patient beware, I have also reported her to the Dental board and to the UFT P.S. Dr.Borinos reply to my review is utterly ridiculous! Two other doctors, 1 a general dentist and the other a dental surgeon totally disagreed with Dr Borinos diagnosis that said to have both teeth pulled! Thank God I went to a highly reputable surgeon and general dentist who saved me from losing two teeth! Dr. Borinos just wanted to rip me off for $325.00 and rip off the UFT for what they covered! Do not go to Dr. Borinos!!!! See will see me in small claims court!!!

Good experience, tough to say for a root canal, but the staff was very nice, and Dr. Borinos took her time and I felt no pain. I definitely would recommend this place for a root canal.

Scarsdale Endo (Dr. Borinos) is just the best. I got bad advice from another endo and went to Dr. Borinos for a second opinion. She immediately diagnosed and explained the problem in plain English, and referred me to an oral surgeon. Just wonderful.

I was in extreme pain when I arrived to the office and feeling anxious. However, my fears subsided after only a few moments after I realized I was in good hands. A true professional and thoroughly explained the procedure every step of way, which made me feel very comfortable. I would recommend everyone who needs any special care done to their teeth, to come to this office and see this Doctor!

My Dentist, Dr. Reddi of Yonkers has retired, and I was in such frenzy to find a Endodontist to do a root canal for me. I was referred to Dr. Tatiana Borinos by Dr. DDS Allan Klein, also an excellent dentist. Dr. Borinos also accepts UFT Cigna Insurance. I now live in Queens but decided to travel to Westchester to see Dr. Borinos. Dr. Borinos office staff was kind, helpful and caring. Karen was on top of my issue and called me when a cancellation came through, so I was able to get my root canal done last week earlier than schedule. The procedure was painless. Dr. Borinos made it easy and painless for me. The procedure went very well. Karen then guided me to the next steps. She also called to check up on me a few days after the procedure. I will see Dr. Klein next week to get the crown sorted. He is also an excellent Dentist. He also did some excellent work for me.

I can't say enough positive things about Dr. Borinos and Karen. They were wonderful from beginning to end. Details of my experience are below: Procedure - Root canal (for both myself and my husband) Setting - The office is clean, comfortable, and inviting. All staff and patients adhered to COVID guidelines, and hand sanitizer was provided at the desk. Note that there is a parking lot but it serves all of the suites in the building so sometimes it can take a bit to find a spot. Be sure to arrive a little early just in case. Service - Dr. Borinos did a great job with both of our procedures. Karen assisted with scheduling our appointments and handling any questions or issues we had, and I can honestly say that her customer service is next level. There should be an award for what she does - seriously.

I had a wonderful experience with my root canal. Dentists and Root canals are on them top of my list to avoid at all costs. Unfortunately I had to submit and have a root canal. I went to Scarsdale Endodontics, and after two visits I was finished. Dr Borinos was kind and extremely knowlegeable Dr.. She explained the procedures step by step. I was apprehensive before I started, but by the 2nd visit, I was put at ease. The staff is friendly, and the office is up to date and clean. I will definitely return, should I need another root canal..

A great experience overall. The office is a welcoming place. Karen, the receptionist is warm and knowledgeable, attentive to patient's insurance paperwork and helpful with operative procedures. My periodontist recommended a consultation with Dr. Borinos for a root canal. She explained the procedure thoroughly and made me feel very comfortable. My root canal was done in two parts. She was gentle and I experienced no pain. Before you leave the office, Karen gives you a pain reliever and reminds you of when to take them. You can be sure they call to follow up on how you feel. Very much appreciated!

Her office canceled my appointment, which was made weeks in advance, at essentially the last minute because of Passover. She wasn't going to be in that day. It's great if you want a day off, but if you do then just don't schedule appointments for that day. If someone can't reschedule, and honor your appointment. It was a huge massive pain to get the time off for my appointment. Extremely unprofessional I, especially because Passover has been on the calenda rfor centuries
