Dr. Chaves is a General Practitioner and Periodontist with over 30 years of experience in dentistry.Dr. Chaves received his DDS degree from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil in 1977 and later his DMD degree from the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine in 1999. Dr. Chaves obtained his periodontal specialty training at UNICAMP in 1981 and his certificate in Periodontics as well as his masters degree at the University of Michigan in 1984.
Dr. Chaves has more than 40 abstracts and peer-reviewed published papers and book chapters. Dr. Chaves has participated in many research projects in the academic and private sectors. He has lectured in the diagnosis and treatment of Periodontal Diseases including regenerative therapies and dental implants.

Had a scheduled appointment at the Venice office but Hurricane Ian dictated otherwise. In the interim I had a dental emergency and was able to get an appointment the day after making a call. Kristy at the front desk and Eva the dental hygienist were fantastic. Dr. Shanaka detailed what needed to be done, put me at ease and took care of the issue. Thank you Tarpon Shores Dental Sarasota.

The Tarpon Shore Dental Hygienists do the most thorough "routine" cleaning I have ever had. The office is always immaculate and so convenient. The staff are also great; very motivated to accommodate one's needs. Dr Shanaka is ALWAYS thorough, polite and engaging. A FANTASTIC dental experience. I HIGHLY recommend Tarpon Shores Dental just off The Circle in the strongest terms without any reservations.

I was In Sarasota on vacation and had a dental emergency. The dentist and the staff were extremely helpful and showed obvious knowledge in their field. As a physician I can be picky on my medical providers- I am glad I found such great care. Definitely recommend.
