Be aware that you should pay upfront all out of pocket. Admin personal didn't provide this information when i made appointment. Also please be aware that you will have hard time to talk with them via phone. they are not calling back for some reason. I did wanted to provide all insurance information so they can file the claim but it is hard to do with them. don't recommend because of bad communication and administration.

I've been to more than my fair share of periodontal experts in the past 30 years, so after being referred to Tar Heel Periodontics by my general dentist, I feel pretty qualified to say that Dr. Stella is an exceptional professional. He had to "section" an existing bridge to remove one failing tooth, and then place an implant. His caring attitude, along with his clear explanations of each step, made the entire extraction and implant procedure an incredibly smooth one. His expertise saw me all the way through to the "finished product" with no complications and no discomfort. His associates Callie, who assisted with the procedures, and Nikki, who saw me post-op, were also first-class professionals. I'm a Tar Heel Periodontics fan for life!

After having a prior positive experience with Dr. Kretchmer, I am unfortunately writing today to state that a week ago I had anything but a positive experience. On 9/09/19, I was prepared to enter the third phase of my implant process which has been quite lengthy (expensive) and exhausting. After having to cancel twice due to an illness the month prior, I was finally prepared and confirmed for my Monday appointment with the Staff. However, the morning OF my 9:00am appointment, I received a call that medical clearance was wanted from Dr. Kretchmer, the morning OF my appointment at 8:00am. Mind you, he was already aware that I had been ill for 2 weeks prior to this as I had cancelled my appointments and still chose to wait until the morning of to request documentation. That was the first unprofessional matter. Second, I received the medical clearance in an exceptionally timely manner from my two providers and e-mailed immediately to his staff. Upon delivery of these letters (in less than 1 hour time), receipt was confirmed and I was contacted at 9:15 to come in for my appointment. I arrived 15 minutes later at the office due to living locally, and was brought back to my chair to prep. During this time, I was questioned by Georgie, an assistant, as to why I did not medicate before-hand. These instructions were never provided to me once, and upon scheduling the appointment I was assured that the "gas" would be plenty to get through this portion of the procedure. Georgie stated he would consult with Dr. K. re: my lack of medication prep. Approximately 5-10 minutes went by, when I was then requested to come to the consult room to meet with a woman from the billing department. Behind closed doors, she first explained that she was trying to "understand what was going on behind the scenes" and also requested to know why I did not have anesthesia for this appointment, which I explained. Second, she mentions that I had only paid for 1 implant and not 2, to which I replied that I had paid for exactly what I was billed for and quoted on (somewhere around $2,500) 2-3 weeks prior to the appointment. At this point, I become curious as to why the billing errors of the Tar Heel Perio staff suddenly become my concern. At that point, I offered to pay the additional money, whatever is needed in order to proceed, to which I'm told, "Well, you see, we're cutting it close to the time limit, and it's not safe now..." due to my late arrival (which I was instructed to come in anyway) and was only delayed due to the Dr's request for medical information on the same day as my appointment. Mind you, at this time I have still not seen my Dr. Kretchmer, nor had any of this explained to me appropriately, nor have any idea why this is all suddenly an issue the morning of my surgery. At this point, I have been told I should have pre-medicated, questioned as to why I did not have anesthesia for this appointment, told that I had not paid enough money although I was told prior I had paid in full, and now also told that my late arrival which was permitted is no longer a feasible timeframe to work in, on the day of my appointment. No apologies, no offer for repair or reschedule, no admission of honesty that there had been a mistake anywhere on their end- NOTHING. I gave Tar Heel Perio a second chance after having my last appointment covered by a Doctor whom I was unfamiliar with and did not know my case and regardless of what I had seen on the news re: this practice. However, it is worth nothing that I have always had positive experiences and exceptional care from the office worker Sarah. Unfortunately, it seems that the care and compassion that was ubiquitous at this practice of young professionals prior has suddenly diminished as their business has continued to inflate. Although I have chosen to seek services elsewhere from here forth, I hope that this review can provide some constructive criticism on how to better treat patients and have open communication prior to the appointment versus the hour of. None the less, I wish you all the best of luck.

My dentist had advised me for over two year to go for a consult at Tar Heel Periodontics. Finally, I had the consult with Dr. Stella. He and his staff were very supportive and understanding of my fears. Dr. Stella never rushed me during the consult and answered all my questions. Three weeks today post-op from the 3 gum grafts, I can honestly say, it wasn't that bad. I'm so thankful for the staff and Dr. Stella's encouragement and outstanding patient care. I recommend them a 100%! Awesome...thank you!

Dr. Stella is a phenomenal doctor, and the extraction was pain-free. The bone grafting went flawlessly, and the implant could not have been better. My struggle here came with the price tag and office staff. I paid in the neighborhood of $7500 from start to finish on a single tooth extraction, bone grafting (on the two surrounding teeth), and implant stud. Then I had to have the crown made by my dentist. This process took in the neighborhood of six months altogether because Dr. Stella wanted to be thorough and ensure there would be no infection in the implant location. This provider is out-of-network for most insurance companies, so the filing procedure was a bit painful. This practice requires the payment in full before they will perform each portion of the procedure, so be prepared to drop $2-3k before each visit. It took me 3 months to have my claim processed each time, so it put me in a financial situation each time until I was reimbursed. I stayed on top of things and called my insurance company multiple times each week to expedite the process, so I found it strange that the insurance company had not received my claim when I called a month after my first portion of the procedure. I made several more calls, and they finally got the information to my insurance company. The last visit was not as bad, and everything after that has been complimentary (X-Rays, MRI, etc.). If I had to choose a doctor for this procedure again, I would likely choose Dr. Stella again. His assistants are helpful and glad to be there. However, my first impression of the office staff (billing, appointments, filing) was lackluster, and I hope they pick up the pace to be on par with Stella and Kretchmer. I saw some new faces in there yesterday, so maybe this is a good sign? Oh, also....be sure to go to their Raleigh location on Strickland Road. I went to the Wake Forest location for my first two visits. Everything has been better for me at the Raleigh location. This is where I met Dr. Kretchmer for the first time, and he's a pretty awesome guy as well. :)
