Synergy Periodontics and Implants - Periodontist in Fredericksburg, VA

I was born in Athens, Greece and grew up in a boisterous family of four. Following a rigorous national exam process, I earned a position in the School of Dentistry at the University of Athens. After 5 year of dental training, I received my Doctor of Dental Sciences degree (DDS). During dental school, I had the privilege of serving one term as VP of the European Dental Students Association.

Passionate about continuous advancement of knowledge, I applied for and was accepted in a 3-year prosthodontics specialty residency in Athens. During this time, I learned how to develop individualized plans, complete full mouth restorations and handle the most complex dental conditions including designing implant prosthetics for cancer patients and those with failing teeth. In addition, during those 3 years of prosthodontics training, I successfully defended my first masters thesis on biomaterials.

At UAB, I defended my second masters thesis on growth factors and bone grafting for dental implants. A life changing highlight of my residency in Alabama was meeting my wife, (an amazing periodontist and my practice partner), Dr. Lillie Pitman. Needless to say, I decided to stay in the United States!

After my training, I achieved board certification in periodontology, the highest level of distinction in our field. Before moving to Fredericksburg, I served as an assistant professor in the Dental School at the University of Louisville, Kentucky. During that time, I was humbled to receive the prestigious Educator Award from the American Academy of Periodontology, and the Favorite Faculty Award selected by the dental students.

I am honored to frequently travel and give lectures to dentists nationally and internationally. These experiences help me appreciate the complete spectrum of modern dental care and allow me to be part of an international network of excellent clinicians and opinion leaders.

Having 6 years of additional residency training after dental school, enables me to offer successful, highly aesthetic results with predictability and ease. Whether its treating natural teeth or dental implants, I strive for perfection every step of the way.

I aim to serve as a resource for Virginia and the greater dental community. Dr. Pitman and I are directors of the Commonwealth Study Club, which is a local continuing education forum in the Seattle Study Club network. In addition, I direct a local Spear Study Club this is a group of dentists who discuss complex cases and learn how to better serve our patients. We are strong believers in community involvement and investment and continue to foster the culture of service and patient-centered care established by our predecessor Dr. Bob McGrail.

My mother taught me how to be a great provider, with her professionalism and interaction with patients. She pushed my interest in special surgery. Today, I strive to provide all of my patients the best care with kindness

Dr. Bana Al Haydar grew up in Idlib, a city in northwestern Syria. Having a mother who practiced general dentistry for over 25 years exposed her to various aspects of dentistry and enabled her to develop a particular interest in managing periodontal disease. Dr. Haydar gained further interest in hard and soft tissue management, as well as implant surgery, after she completed a 4-year residency program in prosthodontics.

Dr. Al Haydars path had many turns before she came to Synergy Periodontics and Implants. She has been a dentist in a war-torn city in Syria practicing alongside her mother. After becoming a Syrian refugee in Turkey, Dr. Haydar led a non-profit, starting community health programs in both Syria & Turkey serving Syrian refugees. She also co-founded a dental clinic in Southern Turkey that provided free dental care to refugees.

After losing her mother and her job, Dr. Haydar left Turkey, claimed asylum in the United States, and pursued her dream to study periodontics at Columbia University. She calls it a dream come true because when she was in school in Syria, she read Papapanou, Tarnow, and Fletcher, and while at Columbia they taught her every day.

Dr. Haydar enjoys working with patients and playing a role in making an impact on their well-being and overall health by managing periodontal disease and promoting a personalized approach to their oral health. She also enjoys teaching dental students and is currently in the process of becoming a member of the deans faculty at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.
