Dr. John LaJoy was born and raised in Sylmar, California. He attended St. Didacus Grammar School and Alemany High School. He spent three years in the U.S Army as a dental assistant attaining the rank of Sergeant. After his time in the Army he went on to attend and graduate from Cal State University, Northridge in 1979 with a BA in Biology. Soon after, he attended dental school at UCLA and graduated in 1983. He started Sylmar Family Dental Group in 1985 and has been proudly serving the community for over 30 years. He is a proud member of the American Dental Association (ADA), California Dental Association (CDA), and the San Fernando Valley Dental Society. Dr. LaJoy has been married to his wife, JoAnn for over 38 years and has two beautiful daughters.

Dr. Valafar attended University of Southern California (USC) for her undergraduate education, where she excelled in two majors and earned her degrees in Biological Sciences and Psychology. Thereafter, she attended University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Dentistry. She has been pursuing her career in dentistry ever since, and takes pride in providing her patients with quality care and a great office experience. On her free time, she enjoys outdoor activities, water sports, and reading.

Dr. Christine White is a Graduate of University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) where she recieved a Bachelors of Science in Physiological Science. She completed her Doctorate of Dental Surgery at University Southern California (USC) in 2005. Dr. White has been caring for patients of Sylmar Family Dental Group for almost 10 years. She has a passion for community dentistry and spent many years participating in volunteer community dental service groups. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her young son and daughter, social ballroom dancing, and reading interior design magazines.

The Staff was very nice. The dentist was great. Highly recommend. The lady taking my Xrays was very nice. My cleaning came out great. I really appreciated the discussion of treatment options. The front desk was helpful in explaining my payment options and emailed me a detailed care plan for my treatment organized by importance with a breakdown of what my insurance covered and what I needed to pay.

First time coming to this office. A little outdated furniture. It was kind of like stepping back into a dentist office when I was young but the people were friendly which is the most important.

Dr. Valvar is the best, especially with kids. My kids don't complain about dental appts because of how patient and welcoming she is. The office team is great too.

I have been going to this dentist for about 25 years. I not only highly recommend it, but both of my children have been going since they were little, they are now 32 and 22 years. Now that they are both adults, they will not go anywhere else. I have never liked going to the dentist but at Sylmar Family Dentist I have always been comfortable and they treat me like family. The wait time is never too long and they always discuss the options for the best treatment and therefore it becomes my decision. I have since moved from Sylmar, I drive an hour to get to them and it is well worth it.

My daughter has been going there for months. She needed an extractor for her upper mouth. Dr. V and his staff have been amazing! My daughter also has some braces and she loves the fact she can pick her color or rubber band. I would highly recommend Dr. V to anyone looking for an amazing Orthodontist!
