Your tooth consists of two main parts: the crown, which is the part of the tooth above the gum and visible in your mouth; and the root or roots, which is the part of the tooth that lies beneath the gum and is surrounded by bone. Inside each root is a channel that runs the length of the tooth. This channel is the root canal and contains the pulp (nerves, blood vessels, and soft tissue), which is often referred to as the nerve of the tooth. The pulp may be irreversibly damaged by bacteria associated with decay, very deep restorations, fractures, trauma, or periodontal disease.

In order to preserve a tooth in which this has occurred, it is necessary to remove the diseased pulp tissue. This procedure is known as endodontic therapy. Since endodontic therapy is concerned with removing only the pulp from the root canal, the root will continue to function normally because the supporting tissues remain intact. It is advisable to remove the injured pulp because it may become infected or act as an irritant to the tissues surrounding the tooth.

All I ever heard back in the day was how terrible and painful having a root canal was. So, when my dentist informed me I needed to have a root canal - panic set in. I was referred to Dr. Sutton for the procedure. From walking into the office, through the process, and walking out - EVERYONE in the office was nice and pleasant. I had virtually no wait time to get into the "dreaded" chair. Once seated, Dr. Sutton came in and we had a small chat about what was going on. Within minutes, he had me numbed up and ready to drill. Let me start with saying the numbing process was flawless, and I didn't even notice he was sticking me with a needle. His seat side manners were top notch, communicating with me through-out the procedure. I never once felt any pain or discomfort. On this particular tooth, I had two canals that needed treatment. From entry to exit - 1 hour...just 1 hour - and that wasn't all chair time - check in, procedure, check out - 1 hour. I was very impressed at the speed and accuracy of Dr. Sutton, and I am no longer scared to have another one done if I need to. I would highly recommend Dr. Sutton if you are ever in need of a root canal - he definitely is the best in his field in the Southeast Idaho area.

The front desk assistant was very attentive to Covid-19 precautions. Dr. Sutton got me in right away and did an excellent job on my VERY painful root canal. I was concerned that he spoke to me at the beginning of the visit from 3 feet away with no mask, as did his assistant.

Dr. Sutton did a root canal for me just a week ago. He was fantastic, made sure he had the right tooth and had to drill through a porcelain crown. He was careful and so fast. I arrived at his office and was leaving in just under an hour. Root canals are never fun but this was a pleasant experience for me.
