Dr. Mellanda Colson-Scott graduated from Howard University in 1998 with her Doctorate in Dental Surgery, and completed a one year residency at the New Jersey Dental School before moving to the Tidewater area in 2005. Dr. Colson-Scott takes an active role in her community by routinely volunteering her time, skills, and knowledge to give those in need access to dental care. She has participated in the yearly health fair, Project Homeless Connect in Norfolk, since it started in 2005. This fair provides citizens access to medical providers, housing agencies, employment agencies, and mainstream benefits specialists. Dr. Colson-Scott also gives lessons on proper oral hygiene and what to expect at dental visits to school aged children in the classroom. In her spare time, Dr. Mellanda Colson-Scotts favorite activities include participating in outdoor sports, such as skiing and river rafting, photography, attending local theater productions, reading and sleeping. Although she has resided in the great Commonwealth of Virginia for the last ten years, Dr. Colson-Scott is a Dallas Cowboys fan (you can blame her husband for that), and she can be found at a game on several Sundays during the football season.

My experience with Sunset Family Dentistry: Well, I decided to go to this dentist office because it's near my residence. I arrived for my first appointment as a consultation to discuss having dentures. I really appreciate how every appointment was coordinated, and how respectful I was treated throughout each visit. Dr. Scott of Sunset Family Dentistry, carefully listened to my needs, and really gave me her professionally care to my dental health. Dr. Scott would not allow a single error to go unnoticed in her procedural review through every appointment to getting my dentures. I'm beyond grateful for Dr. Scott and her amazing team at Sunset Family Dentistry especially Danielle. This experience has been a blessing and very meaningful to my life. Thank you to each of you at Sunset Family Dentistry for never settling on good enough results, and delivering well above excellence. I do not have health insurance, so I paid out of pocket. The dentist seemed annoyed that I wanted to know the price of the X-ray before going ahead. The dentist herself made "slick comments" to me (someone else mentioned this). I was there for the health of my teeth (cavities and such). She was telling me I need this and that (all cosmetic) on teeth that were healthy and functioning properly. I felt mistreated after leaving this appointment. The slap in the face was receiving a bill for X-ray services that I was never told about, and I didn't agree to. Went to a different dentist who said unless I have 10k to blow the services this lady said I needed were completely unnecessary. He did the work that I actually needed done and I paid him cash for them. This dentist will treat you like a walking atm, and is very condescending to boot. I DO NOT recommend her at ALL. If you are reading this Mellanda, it's very clear you don't care about the health of your clients. The other dentist got thousands of dollars in cash from me because of the way he treated me and will continue to do so in the future. Definitely your loss.

THEY NEVER ANSWER THE PHONES.....After one visit, I'm looking for another dentist. Dr. Colson needs a more professional and organized team. I tried calling for a week no answer no call back. When I finally get a call back, I called back and no answer still. I was calling to get my treatment plan that they never send me from the first visit. Well I'm not gonna beg no one to take my money. I'm so glad I found out before I started spending thousands of dollars. They might start answering the phones now after this review. SMDH

I had a broken tooth and they got me in fast and took great care of me. I love the fact that they are CAREING and worked to get me taken care of fast.

The staff is professional and efficient, the doctor is kind, gentle and patient, and it's clean and well-run. I'm so close I can walk to the practice, but even after I move I will continue to be a patient here.

Normally, I am nervous when I have a dental appointment. This office put me at ease from the moment I walked into the waiting room. The receptionist was both friendly and efficient. The technician who took X-rays of and cleaned my teeth, explained what she was doing. ( I had chipped a discolored tooth. ) Dr. Colson gave her opinion and answered my questions. Her assistant made sure that I understood the follow-up instructions, not only instructing me but also telling me why. Yes, I would recommend this office to others.

Marenda was fantastic!!! I haven't seen a hygienist since I was 7 years old, so naturally I was a little nervous. Marenda is so polite, and explained everything that was being done to help make me more comfortable. Had a get experience and I'm looking forward to my next visit!

My dental procedures was performed perfectly..but my Dr Colson was so rude to me she made alot of slick comments and the receptionist is so embarrassing because she talks so loudly that the entire waiting room can hear her discuss your treatment plan with you

I love this practice. Dr. Colson is super nice and relatable. Unlike many doctors, she does not make me feel like she is itching to end the appointment. Plus all of her techs and office staff have always been very warm and friendly. I have never had to wait for very long to be seen. Great experience here, I always recommend them!
