Dr. Gunnels or Dr. G as the kids call him, grew up in Mobile, Alabama. He studied Pre-Professional Biology at the University of West Florida, where he also competed on the mens tennis team. Dr. Gunnels attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham to complete his formal dental training. While serving in Guatemala on a mission trip, his attention shifted to wanting to treat children. Following dental school, Dr. Gunnels completed specialty training at Baylor in Dallas, TX. While there, he spent two years focused on treating pediatric patients and children with special needs. Following the completion of his specialty training, Dr. Gunnels completed two additional examinations to become a Board-Certified Pediatric Dentist.
From there, Dr. Gunnels and his wife Kristen moved to Denver, Colorado, to work for a pediatric dental office. During their two years in Colorado, they enjoyed everything from skiing, climbing 14ers, and camping. While Dr. Gunnels and his family enjoyed their time in Colorado, they felt a pull to move back to Alabama and start Summit Smiles Pediatric Dentistry. In his spare time, Dr. Gunnels enjoys spending time with his lovely wife, Kristen, and their golden retriever named Beau! He enjoys playing tennis and attempts to play golf! He cant wait to meet you and your family!

Everyone who works here is always so nice and works so well with kids. We drive over 45 minutes just to come to their office. My son loves going to visit them and they have the most beautiful facility and everything is always so clean. We love Summit Smiles so much! They are the best pediatric dentist we have been too!

If you are looking for a pediatric dentist, you can stop now! Look no further... you will never find a better dentist than Dr.Gunnels! Him and his entire staff make trips to the dentist so much fun for kids. From the iPad room, to stickers and hands down the most amazing wall of toys - it's the best place! Yes... an entire wall of toys! Who wouldn't love that?! They always go above and beyond, highly recommend!!

My 3 year old son loves this place. We walked out and he said "that was fun. I want to come back tomorrow." It is clean, has fun toys, and the staff are great. Super friendly, patient, and great with kids. Edit to add: three years later and that 6 year old still asks frequently when he can go back to the dentist, and replies "Aw, that's going to take forever" when it is not immediately. His now 3 year old brother loves it too! Dr. Gunnells is so great and I feel he will try conservative treatments before going for fillings, etc. and is very cost considerate. Can't recommend enough!

The entire experience was amazing. The staff are welcoming and very knowledgeable. We brought all the kiddos in and somehow we were finished within 45 mins which is extremely efficient. We spent quality time with the dentist and had all of our questions answered. The kiddos LOVED their fun prizes and the iPad waiting room ;) When we shared it was my husbands bday, they even treated him to a special gift. So kind!! It was a positive experience for the kiddos and parents. Also their facility is beautiful! Highly recommend.

Dr. G was excellent! It was my sons first time here and he loved the experience! Dr. G was patient, explained everything to him and kept him involved at all times. My 8 year old was made to feel very comfortable. Dr G was thorough, patient and addressed all our concerns. His staff is excellent! It's a great practice and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great pediatric dentist.

Literally the most amazing dentist office. My daughter had a bad experience at her regular dentist office, so she was very difficult and crying. Everyone that worked with her calmed her to the point that she was cooperative. I was literally in shock watching. Honestly. They were so patient and talked my daughter and myself through everything!

Dr. G and Staff do an outstanding job! They eliminate the stress of dental cleaning and procedures from both the children and the parents, plus they are exceptionally understanding and have remarkable patience with my special needs child. Absolutely the best pediatric dentist around!! My daughter (age 7) had to get a filling and a tooth pulled and was told she needed IV sedation by another dentist because of her nervousness. We went to Dr. Gunnels and he put her at ease, explained everything to her and she got it done in office with no problems. She was all smiles when we left and didn't shed 1 tear the whole time. She even got to pick a pumpkin as a prize!! The parents are allowed back during the procedure and the overall experience couldn't have been better!!! We have found a permanent dentist for both of our girls!!

Dr. Sean was Scarlett's dentist in Colorado. We were going to travel back and forth for her appointments after we moved to Alabama and then we got lucky and he moved here! We would follow him and Ms. Kristen anywhere they go just to keep Scarlett under his care!

Absolutely LOVE this dentist office my kids are new patients with them. & we just moved to the cahaba heights area they have made me & my children feel completely at home!! Friendly & helpful staff. When you first walk in you are greeted by the sweet front desk staff and the dentist is so informative and really makes your visit so easy.
