February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

This was my first visit at the South Sioux City Summit Dental Health. The staff there were pleasant and friendly making my first dental appointment in over 10 years MUCH easier on the nerves. Due to my medical condition I need my dental work done ASAP before I can move to the next step towards recovery. In the time it took to x-ray and inspect my teeth they had cleared all the procedures needed with my insurance company and scheduled my next visit to start treatments. The attitude and compassion I experienced at SUMMIT Dental was a welcoming experience and I look forward to returning to begin my journey towards recovery. Thank you to all involved, Mike

I've had my appointment date scheduled for months because that's apparently how booked up they were. 3 days before my appointment they call me and tell me they need to move my appointment up to one hour earlier, I say okay no problem. The day of my appointment I'm driving there as I live an hour away and they call me 40 mins to my appointment time which is messed up considering they open at 8 and they didn't call me till 9:15 and tell me they have to cancel because someone is out of the office which they would've known at 8 not 9:15 and offered no alternative except next week same day and time. I've literally waited over 3 months for this appointment date and took off work during a weekday for it and now they want me to take another day off if I even get in that day? unacceptable.

My son has scheduled three appts at the SouthSioux office. Each time there has been an excuse for his appt to be changed. They supposedly had a wrong phone number,the doctor was sick etc. this past Wednesday he called in the morning to confirm his appt and was told that it was cancelled again but they were planning on calling to let him know. He called the office back,was put on hold and when someone finally answered they told him several places he could be seen that pm but they were all in Omaha which is 2 hours from him. The person he was talking to was blaming all the cancelled appts on Covid. Finally discovered the person he was talking to was not even in the South Sioux office but in Kentucky.. needless to say he won't be coming to this office again..

Really loved it here I had actually switched to a different location but I did not like my experience so I came back here. And so happy with my choice. Everyone is so welcoming and helpful. From the front desk to assistants and dentists. I brought in my family of 6. Husband and 4 kids and myself and they made the experience so much less stressful. Highly recommend!!!
