February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

11/10 would highly recommend I have been coming to this dentist office for about two years and every time I come the staff is beyond amazing!! I never have to worry about being treated poorly. They all do such a wonderful job!!

Was looking for a new dentist for my family and I since we are somewhat new to Sioux. Had a problem tooth and went here based on the Google reviews. Was welcomed nicely at the front, go back have the tooth looked at and diagnosed, was told I have reimbursement insurance and that I need to pay $2500 up front and then insurance would pay me back. I have great insurance though Cigna definitely not reimbursement insurance. They walk me to the front, after much conversation back and forth over the insurance they call Cigna again and physically talk to someone and find out they were mistaken and that I do NOT have reimbursement insurance and tell me they're not sure why there was a mix-up but that everything was all cleared up now. Meanwhile, I'm standing there while the gal helping me was on the phone with my insurance the other front desk lady sitting right next to her calls up a lady on the phone who is apparently 5 minutes late to her dental cleaning appointment there. At this point my jaw could have hit the floor and eyes probably popped out of my head lol! I'm talking literally arguing and yelling at some woman over the phone as if she was her mother for being late to her appointment yet again and that she wouldn't be able to fit her in until nearly 2 months later! After she gets off the phone with her she apologizes to me and bad mouths this woman to me a little more. It takes alot to shock me coming from the service industry myself but I've never heard a professional place of business yell at one of their customers like that ever before. I will remember it forever lol. At that point I knew this was definitely not the place I wanted to give my business. BUT, with that being said the dental assistant was very nice and Dr. Lewis who cared for me in back had excellent bedside manner, very professional, and was very friendly. He's a 5 star dentist working with a 1 star front desk but unfortunately, that's the case with many medical and dental places. That experience is one to remember and I'm somewhat glad it happened because it led me to where my family and I were meant to be at our new permanent family dentist.

Sadly I had to switch dental insurance so I was 3m overdue. I've been going here for 36yrs and wasn't about to switch dentist. Who would think they'd be excited to go, Me. I would never dream of going anywhere else.. Though I've seen many dentists there over the years, I've been seeing Dr. Lewis since he started. He's amazing and very laid back. I've taken all of my kids there. Everyone there is very friendly.

This was Seth's first visit to a dentist and I wanted to make sure that we had someone that made him feel at ease and still got the job done. He had no problems with pain or anxiety they made him feel like he was just going to be fine . He had three cavities that are all taken care of is doing well now. So I would tell anyone to choose Summit Dental .

I had had a bad experience with another dentist locally but heard good things about this place. It is all true. The staff appear happy to work there and try to make you as comfortable as possible. So this time around I was explaining how badly I gag with x-ray, so they got out a "laser gun" to shoot them in a second or two! No horrible gagging! I love this place.

We been in Sioux City since January 2022. I've been to alot of Nebraska Dentists, and thanks to Summit Dental Health I learned that they were out to make money off me. The Dentist staff, Dentist, Hygentis's, and office staff are all top notch, caring and professional!!! When it comes to Dental care I'm a bit of a baby, you are all appreciated, and HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am excited to see my transformation, and to get my confidence, and smile back!!!!!
