February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

The staff is awesome. They always take care of there patients. The only issue I've had was they forgot to check me in so I waited an hour before being seen and then the doctor left so I had to wait for her to get back to be seen.

I am a caregiver and the client that I am responsible for has two cavities that needed tending to ASAP! I called around to several dental offices that was given to me as referrals . And of course, they're either not taking new clients at this time, or they don't take the type of insurance that my client has, nor taking clients until 19 September. However, when I spoke with Summit dental on S. 24th St. in South Omaha, they were very pleasant and welcoming and also excepting new clients with that type of insurance that the client has! The client has certain needs, and from the time that I checked in with the receptionist, to the dental hygienist , to the doctors, they were all very patient with the client as well as, very professional, and exceptionally flexible with dealing with the client. Even, when the client wasn't able to maintain full cooperation continually! This caregiver was very grateful and thankful to the doctor dental hygienist, and the receptionist for their exceptional kindness and their endurance! Thank you Summit dental on S. 24th St. you are totally brilliant! Thankful Caregiver!

It's a dentist office but not one I enjoy. They have given me a lot of small problems over a few years. None of the issues have ever been with the dentists and it's only some of the staff. Some examples; uncomfortable chairs, no cold water in the bathroom, initial unwillingness to help with an estimate, asking to stay in uncomfortable positions.

When it come to going to the dentist in all my years of life, I just had one bad experience after another. With one experience, I even needed to have part of my jaw removed because they said a wisdom tooth was impacted. I have a needle phobia plus am a big baby when it comes to pain. At this Summit Dental, the staff and Dr. Hansen when above and beyond to see to my comfort. Excellent professionalism along with kindness and caring. ( I am Amazed !!) After fearing the dentist for so long I can't believe I'm actually looking forward to returning for my post op in a few weeks .

I have held off on going to the dentist for quite awhile. The staff and Dr. Hanson were very receptive to my concerns. Also, took great care of me. I definitely will continue to use them as my dentist! Thanks guys!
