February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

Dr. Straub and his assistant are absolutely AWESOME people. I had to have all of my teeth pulled and dentures made. They did a fantastic job for me! They each explained step by step what was going to be done and how they were going to do it. I would most certainly recommend them to all of my family and friends. I have no complaints at all.

Staff was very friendly during my whole visit and made sure I understood everything and had all the aftercare instructions and items needed after getting wisdom teeth pulled. Was pregnant and they made sure I was comfortable and safe during the the entire procedure.

Front desk ladies are awesome. Whole staff is awesome. Especially Rob the hygienist. Clean office! Very good at making you comfortable and talks you thru while process of everything. Good dentist office

Frist impressions are important, the staff is very friendly and helpful, but the doctor or dentist (whatever he wants to be called) came across as arrogant and rude, we will not be going back there again.

Went in for an emergency broken tooth..got right in. Staff extremely friends. Dr Straub extracted my tooth painlessly. I was terrified but I will say a very good experience and I will take all my dental work there.

This dental office is awful. Dr. Straub is very rude to his assistants and to the patients- treats you like you're incompetent. They reschedule appointments the very last minute- probably because of poor communication from Dr. Straub- and expect you to abide by their time frames- even when you have a job and/ or small kids to look after and don't have ability to just drop what you're doing and show up whenever. Absolutely ridiculous. The only reason I came here was because it was all I could get into unless I was going to be booked out for months. They split your appointments into two separate appointments just so that you can return twice a month for three months. I will not recommend or return. This office is terrible and the communication inside of this dental office needs some serious work.

They sent my son home with no pain meds after extracting 4 teeth and he was bleeding profusely for 2 days and his face was severely swollen. There was also no after-hours care available for over the weekend. Very unhappy with the dentist. Staff did what they could to help but I wouldn't recommend this place, they don't care about their patients in my opinion.

Small office with very limited parking but clean and well equipped. Dentist was brisk but i liked his to the point this is whats going on an this is what we can do layout. Didnt sugarcoat but wasnt rude either. Plan on getting my dentures through here.

My 4 year old need a cavity filled and was nervous about it. Dr. Straub did an amazing job explaining everything to her and helping her stay calm during the procedure. Very pleased with his patient care and helping make a scary visit easy for my little girl.

We brought my elderly mom here to have a filling down - she does have memory and cognitive issues due to a stroke but does not have Alzheimer's - when she seemed confused the dentist said oh I understand my dad has Alzheimer's too - not an appropriate thing to say especially since she does not have Alzheimer's she was very upset about the statement and we left the appointment. She will not return to the dentist or location. Need to show a little more compassion. Also this location is extremely difficult to get into the building for those who cannot climb stairs as the sidewalk ramp is in very bad shape.
