February has been designated Gum Disease Awareness Month! Initially launched by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry, its purpose is to raise awareness about gum disease and encourage healthy dental habits to prevent it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis, is the result of infections and inflammation of the gums and bone that surround and support the teeth. In the early stages, the gums can become swollen and red, and they may bleed. As it progresses, the gums can pull away from the tooth, which can eventually result in bone and tooth loss. Not only does gum disease affect your mouth, it can affect your body as well. Regular check-ups and good oral hygiene are important to ensure everything is healthy.
Periodontal disease is mostly seen in adults, with 47.2% of those aged 30 years and older having some form of it. This risk only increases with age. On top of age, there are many other risk factors that can increase your chance of developing gum disease. One of the primary risk factors is smoking, followed by poor oral hygiene, diabetes, stress, hormonal changes and medications that cause dry mouth.
While gum disease starts in the mouth, when left untreated, it can start affecting many other parts of the body as well. This includes respiratory disease, rheumatoid arthritis, coronary artery disease and diabetes.

Everyone was nice, but it was such a weird experience and seemed very unorganized. The dentist made me a little uncomfortable. And it was one of the most painful cleanings I've ever had.

Stonehaven is great. Aubrey, Magda, Dr. Jason and the rest of the staff are all awesome. They explain everything up front and do a great job with fillings, cleanings and crowns. I'll definitely be going there for the foreseeable future.

Frustrating when you are told that your part of the bill is one amount so you pay it at the time of service. A month later you get a bill saying you owe even more from that date of service. Will not be returning

Incredibly professional and kind office! Aubrey made scheduling a breeze! She followed-up prior to my appointment to resolve an insurance issue and explained exactly what I needed to do to get everything sorted, which made the whole thing much easier! She worked with my insane schedule and got me in quickly. Analia did all of my x-rays and was incredibly patient and kind throughout the whole process. Dr. Jason was so great to work with and he quickly put me at ease with his explanations and knowledge! He also fixed the little chip in my tooth even though we hadn't planned on it! Everyone was so kind and made me feel comfortable, even though dentists make me super nervous. I was SUPER impressed with how kind everyone was, especially at 7 am on a Friday! I'm even looking forward to my next appointment! Seriously, this is a FABULOUS office for anyone looking for a great dentist with fantastic staff.
